I’m about to cut off media till they have a coach. Reading the tea leaves is impossible now and it’s causing me angst.

There really is no reason to think that Lynn Bowden can be anything close to Deebo, that's just wishful thinking. It would be nice if we could get SOMETHING out of him, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him not be on the roster instead.

It's not impossible, but literally every team and fanbase are going to be searching their rosters, drafts and FA targets for "their" Deebo/special weapon. It's just silly.

I'd be interested to see what a McDaniel can do with Waddle though. Obviously a different player than Deebo, but the speed/quickness should be something that a smart guy can harness and work with much more than we did last year. I'd also be interested in seeing what we could do with Giesicki, who seems to lack consistency despite having all the tools you want.

There really is no need to do that kind of thing. The Vikings interest is legit and so is Harbaugh most likely. Unless we pre-emptively hire McDaniel, then it's likely that Harbaugh gave Ross a gentleman's agreement to let him match the Vikes offer.

Ross doesn’t have the pull he wants or thinks he has if he’s allowing JIM to get on a plane and visit to Minnesota at all! Ross if you want him so bad make the call now and just give him bank.

You been wasting cash year in and out on bad coaches just give him want he wants and get on with rebuilding this team. If miney isn’t the issue but control is and as he says he wants to bring in a GM and you are holding out because you love Grier for some reason your a complete incompetent idiot.

I’d fire Grier today if it was standing between us getting him or some yes puppet!

It would be absolutely in step with the last...... oh! .... several decades - it seems. I haven't said anything about the owner because by and large, most owners do this as a hobby... their real assets and interests are in another area or two. But, that also needs to be leavened with the idea that some owners are owners who enjoy owning a team.... AND THE GAME!

And then, there are some who seem to know almost absolutely NOTHING about the game. Their game is looking at Their Team and hoping the team doesn't embarrass him/her/or themselves too very much. I am getting tired of the Dolphins getting 'sort of' close to being almost competent, and then crashing and burning! There does not seem to be any capacity for consistency in the organization (save for consistently being not quite good enough and hiring head coaches they are only going to HAVE to fire soon!) They excel at that !!!
At this point though - despite being a cleric - I could recall some of the more atrocious metaphorically impossible colorful euphemisms from my time in the Navy. But then I would have to ask my Catholic buddy how many Hail Mary's and Our Fathers I would have to say.

You clearly no nothing about his background. He's the play designer... The most influential one in the NFL over the last 15 years. 70% of the NFL runs his concepts. He's the one putting together Shanahan's play call sheet. He's actively involved in everything on offense. Like... What are you talking about? FFS...

This is just ignorant. I thought he had some potential to be like Deebo before there was even a Deebo. He has the ability to catch passes and run the ball out of the back field. He is a very talented player. It wasn't Deebo that made me think so.

Maybe it is wishful thinking, but what is wrong with wishful thinking? That is all the offseason is for. There was a time Deebo being Deebo was wishful thinking. Some players pan out, and some do not.

Mike McDaniel is upside. Harbaugh is established. Harbaugh if hes RIGHT, maybe gives you 4 seasons (and thats being generous) before he loses the room and alienates the entire building. McDaniel, if RIGHT? We dont know how long he could last. Give me the upside. I dont want to be doing this every three years til the end of time.

The 1st time was an informal conversation and pretty much, "Would you even consider a return to the NFL?" It was not an official interview or reported to the NFL that way. Now he's actually interviewing for the position.

    In any case, it's strange.

  19. Well McDaniel's "quick passing game" should suit the ole BB gun. Tua will thrive in a 2-3 yard passing offence, so I suppose it makes sense.

Think about it this way. Flores’ downfall was a lack of collaboration and a power grab. Grier managed to fight that one off because he retains the ear of Ross. If Grier wants to retain his position and power, he will push for a first time head coach because they don’t tend to be given much power and influence until they’ve earned a greater say. Logic dictates that a first time head coach will solidify Grier’s position with us. However, if we hire Harbaugh, it is unlikely that Grier will maintain the same level of control over this team. In all likelihood the owner would lean more towards Harbaugh than Grier, whereas with a rookie head coach our owner would lean more towards Grier.

For me, with how we go through coaches and the general dysfunction, I think hiring Harbaugh could be the best thing for this franchise because he won’t be pushed around or take any ****.

I suspect that's the single most important thing to NFL football players regarding coaching -- whether the coaching is creating a schematic advantage that maximizes their talents and performance and makes the team more likely to win.

I'm a firm believer that the "rah rah" motivational factors are generated by the players among themselves, primarily in the form of player leadership. Certainly the coaching staff helps create a culture within which that player leadership acquires "permission" for its expression, and in that sense the team "takes on the personality of its coach" to some degree. But the drive and intensity the team plays with is generated by the players in my opinion. A coach can exhort the team to play with drive and intensity until he's blue in the face and whether that translates to any significant difference in drive and intensity on the field will be a factor of the effectiveness of player leaders who have that effect on their teammates.

This clip is a good illustration of that -- watch as Bill Cowher delivers a brief message and then turns it over to the player leaders for the thrust of the experience:

That was a team that did the highly improbable and won three playoff games on the road on their way to a Super Bowl win.

So, now couple that kind of player leadership with a coaching staff whose intelligence creates a decided schematic advantage that the players know they have against the opposition. That's a recipe for success.

So I don't believe you need a Dan Campbell type to win in the NFL, just because it's "football." You can win with Bill Belichick (obviously) and effective player leaders.

I like McDaniel in theory; but as you state here I don't want to be doing this every 2-3 years either. Our track record of choosing upside in the inexperienced guys has had us in that exact position though for the last how many hiring cycles now? To me; that's the benefit of Harbaugh even if it is short term; he can at least stabilize things. I'm not concerned about him alienating people; I think he's changed his mentality and approach alot since his SF days. He's got a great way now of connecting to the young players and their "new mentality" as evidenced with his time at Michigan.

At the end of the day my biggest concern with McDaniel is the lack of experience in the way of coaching/leadership. Great; he can design plays and a run game. We've heard about our past co-ordinators become coaches the same thing about their specialty and where has that gotten us? These up and coming guys though are where it's at right now; we're seeing more and more of them find success and that's the upside you hope for here but after 3 failed HC's based on their "upside" part of me feels like the established vet is the voice they need right now; someone who can help get the whole organization in order.

I still don't believe Harbaugh is coming here anyways; so it doesn't matter at the end of the day.

Zero chance its Grier. If Harbaugh isn't on the table its because Ross knows he won't come or because Ross meant what he said about Michigan and that is more important.

He clarified that he meant tempo when he said quicker

I'm aware of his background thanks. I was speaking in generalities in the sense that we've gone this route the last 3 coaching searches now; seeking out the hot co-ordinator. There's a difference though in doing the things McDaniel does in SF compared to being a head coach in the NFL. I'm just not sure this team is current in the position for another gamble like this, but at the same time the trend is towards these young up and coming guys. Part of me wonders though if the organization as a whole needs an established and experienced guy to help fix alot of the nonsense that seems to go on within the organization. I'm just saying there's far more that goes into being a HC than designing plays, concepts and play call sheets. The one thing none of us know at this point is his personal skills. Is he a leader? Can he inspire these guys? Can he manage all the relationships between players, staff, and the FO? This is the area far more young inexperienced coaches fail. We've lived it. That's all I'm saying with respect to McDaniel and the potential downsides. The upsides are obvious. We need help with a running game and our offense as a whole. So if McDaniel is what people are making him out to be right now than we very well could be in good hands. We need a leader though; we need a head coach. Not an offensive co-ordinator; there's a difference and that jump from OC to HC is my concern; like it would be with any young co-ordinator right now without the coaching experience. That simply comes from the place of being burned on the last 3; nothing against McDaniel really. I'd be fine if they hired him; it's just not the direction I think I'd go at this point. Doesn't mean I don't care for him.

For the record; I'm not sure Harbaugh is either from the personality standpoint, but from the experience point of view and the potential of him righting the organizations course as whole I think he's the best choice on that front if we want to go the experienced route but I don't see him as a long term option. I also don't believe for a second he has a desire to come here. I can see him loving our defense; but our offense... not so much. He's a power, smash mouth type of guy in the run game. We aren't built for that. Tua isn't Harbaughs traditional QB type either. I know people want to keep connecting us to him because of Ross; but I just don't see it happening.

I think that would be a good thing. Tua; like Tannehill seemed to perform better when this offense went up tempo/no huddle at times. Kind of like it did with Tannehill.

I don't believe Harbaugh wants to be here. I also wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Ross really did mean what he said about not taking Harbaugh from Michigan. His loyalty to his university over his NFL team is certainly puzzling to me though.

On the weirdo part... Ever watch the series on Amazon Prime on Michigan football? Wow; he certainly is a weirdo at times. From what I know of his time there thus far though; those kids love him and love playing for him. I dont think any of his coaches or former coaches are at odds with him either. I think he's worked on that since his time in SF, but damn he sure can be a weirdo and awkward.

I just dont understand how Stephen Ross can value the University of Michigan football program over the NFL team he owns. Sure; its possible they actually prefer another coach over Harbaugh based on merit but if we don't even sniff around and give the guy a shot (if he actually wants it with us) then he's clueless as an owner but we already know that. Maybe it's just because up here we don't really care much about our past university connections like they seem to be so cherished in the US. I just don't understand it.

I also just don't believe Harbaugh wants to be here either. Especially if the message to the new HC is work with Tua and fix him. He's not a Harbaugh type QB. Plus... Minny now sits in a QB-less division with Rodgers likely leaving Green Bay. That cakewalk division will do wonders for Harbaughs ego.

What happened to McDaniels offense in the 2nd half with a 10 point lead in one of the most important games of the season?

Seems like if he was an offense guru with one of the best OL’s in the NFL with one of the best TE’s, best WR’s and a top 10 rusher he could have mustered a FG or TD in almost 2 quarters to win the game.

Hows he going to help with the worst OL in football, no Deebo Samuel, no Kittle and no legitimate RB with a mediocre GM at best?

Well if he can’t figure out a way to scheme around one player(and I know he’s the best of the best)we’re not going to have a chance against Judon, Watt, Garrett or Hendrickson. Guess we better get used to not making the playoffs or losing in the first round.

Indeed. I was giving this some thought. It might sound 'noble' that Ross is willing to sacrifice for his alma mater but the Dolphins aren't someone else's team. They're his team. Everyone is depending on him. And if doesn't like the idea that 'his' college should be worse off as a football team, how can we like the idea that his team is worse off? He took on this commitment and when he did it he had to have known about the relationship between college football and the NFL. It was always possible a Michigan coach or player moved to the NFL. That's how the system works. And in the event that a to coach came to his team, well that's not him personally harming Michigan, that's an NFL owner doing business in the same ecosystem.

If he would genuinely choose what's best for Michigan to the detriment of the Dolphins then I don't exaggerate when I say that he is not fit to be an NFL owner. He should sell the team and return to his other businesses and continue to invest in Michigan.

I think this line of argument is perfectly fair and valid. McDaniel is not a slam dunk for all those reasons. I took issue with the Philbin comparison. Philbin was an administrator, not a true X's and O's schemer. They're worlds apart in that respect. And while I totally get being burned out on trying to find the next "genius" type, I take comfort in knowing the Mike Shanahan coaching tree has produced the best fruit in the NFL. McDaniel, more so than any of the other coaches from that tree, has been the Shanahan's right hand man behind the scenes for almost his entire NFL career. It's all a hope and prayer at this point no matter who we get as our next coach.
