Skin color? It's funny I don't believe in the Flores crap, but I do believe this could be a factor in this argument.
I think part of it is because people tend to judge draft picks based on the other quarterbacks in the class instead of by each individual player.
Who actually thinks Mac Jones is a pro bowl QB? He's a game manager same as Tua. And you have to take into account that Tua's stats are propped up by the dink and dunk RPO offense. And we won against NE because of our defense, not because of Tuna.
All this says is the Pro Bowl is a joke. That the stats are so similar shows that both are at the moment average QBs, not that somehow Mac Jones is a great QB despite average stats.
The Pro Bowl is a joke. But I think the tweet speaks more to the narrative of perception between the two QBs. Mac Jones was described as a godsend for New England whereas Tua was panned, even after some of his better games. Truth is, both played decently but not great. For Jones to make the Pro Bowl has less to do with his performance than it does with his star power and his star power is based on perception more than performance.
Perhaps. I think there are a lot of lazy sports writers and commentators and, instead of presenting substantive discussions about sport, they see what subjects get clicks and comments and speak on them. If the wind is blowing away from Tua and toward Jones, then that's what they're basing their opinions on. We all know that none of them watches every NFL game on Sunday afternoons, so they get their cues from other writers and highlight editors before forming their Monday morning opinions.
I absolutely believe the Flores crap, but I don't think that's the factor for the anti-Tua narrative. I think it's easy to jump on a bandwagon and since Herbert and Burrow are off to hot starts, Tua's less impressive comparative performance has to mean he's a dud. It's an extremely lazy way to form an opinion, but it gets the clicks and comments that make their network executives happy. Tua's a lightning rod for attention and I think it has less to do with race than it does with how sharply divided fans are over him. I base that opinion on the fact that they literally never talk about whether he wins, only whether he can be a franchise QB. They'll definitely make sure to note when he loses, though because that backs up their perspective.
I think style matters. Some love the big arm, throw it from any angle, going to covert through sheer will types, and will only give the Brees, Brady, and Montana types props when they are undeniable. Tua is still a looong ways from undeniable, and will never be the former. It's why the debates turn into boring variations of a "but he isn't Herbert" loop. If he struggled, but had the arm, à la early Allen, I think there'd be more patience.
It's very simple. Everyone expected NE to bomb. They made the playoffs and nearly won the division. We didn't.
I mean, we had the best record inside the division and we swept the Pats. If you're comparing us to Buffalo...yeah, Buffalo is better. But we owned the Pats and it really wasn't close. We finished 1 game behind NE and 2 behind Buffalo, so it's not like anyone was way ahead of us or anything. We just started way too slow.
The fact that anyone could look at Mac Jones and see anything other than a tua replica is crazy to me. The only reason his narrative is different is because he plays for the patriots. All that crazy media talk that he’s the second coming of Tom Brady through the cushiest part of their schedule only to get exposed the final games of their season.
Right handed Tua with no mobility.None of these Bama QBs are franchise QBs.This guy threw 3 passes in a game against the Bills and won.Pro bowl QB I think not.
I think stats show that they are in same bin of QBs. Jones made some nice plays this season but he has good Oline, better coaching with J. McDaniels and a powerful run game. we'll see if our McDaniel can elevate Tua to top of his bin
Can we stop acting like making the pro bowl is some accomplishment…. Hes not an all pro player… vince young made a pro bowl before.. russell wilson made the pro bowl and he looked like a shell of himself … they just put a bunch of players for tv ratings
Like I said in the Zach Thomas thread…the Pro Bowl, Hall of Fame has become nothing more than a high school homecoming popularity contest…and the game itself is nothing but a flagless flag football game. It’s become utterly disgusting anymore
Once upon a time, it really was an AWESOME game. The best of the best matched up against one another. The BEST offensive linemen matched up against the BEST defensive linemen…the BEST receivers matched up against the BEST cornerbacks…the BEST linebackers taking on the BEST running backs. It’s nothing more than a scrimmage…a practice…a demonstration. It’s utterly BORING
