Yeah. but it wouldn't be necessarily to light a fire under him, history shows that, at some point, we could very well need a quality back up who has a chance to win games, preserving the small hope that the season doesn't go in the toilet. I think it is essential.

Sure, I think that's a given in general. It was more the 'competition' point I was thinking of.

I don't think he was being hositle, bro. He is just emphasizing the major need for a better back up. It is crucial.

I'm not being hostile. It's just the wrong way to look at things. You are putting Tua's feelings above the interests of the team. Yes, support Tua all you want, but please go out and get a quality backup who can take over and win games if/when Tua gets injured again.

Brisset is definitely not that guy.

I hear ya', but even that is not a bad thing. We all know and Tua knows that he is going in as the starter. I don't think competition could hurt, but either way, is more for the security.

I wouldn't have viewed Brissett as that bad before he was here. With a real offense he would have been competent and it wouldn't have been so bad. Not that I want him back because I don't.

Did you actually watch him play? What did he actually do before coming here that made you think he was good? He is terrible. He is slow to move and slow to process, is very awkward and unathletic, very inaccurate, throws up lame ducks all over the place with no accuracy or velocity, just terrible.

I said nothing about being good. I said not that bad. As in not the worst backup bad which is what he became here.

Take note of the reactions when he signed here

Yeah, that was just the usual suspects on here doing the pom pom dance and praising anything and everything the FO does in the off-season. Nobody actually saw him play to know if he was good or not.

I see keyfin at least had some sense to question the signing and admit he never saw him actually play.

In Brissett's defense, he had to play with the same offense that Tua played with. So I wouldn't point the finger solely at him. But yeah, we absolutely need two starting-caliber QB's on our roster. Every team does. I'm talking Moore, Fitzpatrick, etc...guys who probably aren't top-32 in many people's books, but can still surprise you on any given Sunday. Or we're talking about raw, developing young guys.

Yeah, if I don't know what I'm talking about, I'll tell you I don't know what I'm talking about, LOL. But the brief film study I did on Brissett back then did not give me warm, fuzzy feelings inside.

I know it was not a good offense to play in, but Brissett basically showed nothing talent wise, he was tough to watch.

We need a major upgrade to backup Tua.

So your position is that the Dolphins should not improve the team, just so as to not offend Tua?

You can give him support and have competition and a good back up. Well, unless your last name is Flores I guess. For some reason he couldn't give him support with either a good back up and strong competition, or a bad back up and no competition.

We should always be looking to upgrade our roster. Coaches and GMs should only speak in generalities in regards to future transactions. It's nobody's business to know what's brewing in discussions between teams. The question has never been whether Tua is a great quarterback, but whether he's the best option of those presented to us.

There's a bunch of QBs I'd prefer to him. In a world without the scandal, I'd prefer Watson to him. In a world without compensation, I'd prefer Watson to him. But with 21 allegations (3 of which are criminal), I wouldn't trade Tua for Watson. And I certainly would not mortgage the future by giving the Texans the tops of our next three drafts.

We've been dancing for 32 pages about whether he's good enough and the discussion frequently has dipped into who is better, even though those discussions aren't relevant. In all but one NFL city, there's a better quarterback somewhere else. The question ultimately is not whether Tua is the answer, but whether trading Tua and X number of draft and/or player assets makes us better.

Personally, when I looked at the Dolphins last season, I saw a bunch of things that impacted his performance that needed to be fixed before I even considered his soundness. I'm not married to my dude. But I also believe most QBs would struggle with our OL, rushing attack, and head scratching coaching. It's been a good debate that's going to take us all the way into the season.

I am happy to be on the right side of the issue. :001_rolleyes:

I just wanted to confirm. So, then, Tua's potential issues with hiring a good backup that can win games shouldn't be a factor at all in who we pursue.

Let me try asking it this way... Do you think that we can expect Tua to be on an NFL team that has the talent disparity relative to opponents, like he was on at Alabama? Like, playing at Alabama he was essentially on an all-star team, and it wasn't like he was putting up astounding numbers.

Like, I agree that there were many things worse than Tua this season. I definitely agree that if we simply gave Tua an average line, his play would improve. I just think we disagree on how high a level he can play at, if given a line.

My philosophy has always been to draft a QB every 2-3 years, regardless of need. Take the best darn QB a 4th-6th rounder can buy OR bring in the top UDFA. Develop that kid for a few seasons on the practice squad and either keep him or start over...but you keep grabbing them until you hit on one. Once you do find a legit talent, you keep him on the roster as QB2 and start over anyway with a new prospect.

I always want a starter, someone not too far behind the starter and a prospect. And I'm 100% content if most prospects wash out...the goal is to keep rolling the dice anyway.

I'm all for competition. Iron sharpens iron. People scratched their heads when Washington took RG3 and Kirk Cousins in the same draft after trading mucho assets for RG3. In hindsight, that decision was nearly prescient.

You and I disagree on attributes we want from a quarterback. Of course, we all want somebody who displays superior attributes in every area. But if I have a choice between arm strength and accuracy, I'm fine with accuracy. As long as we're moving the ball, I'll take 5-7 yard passes all game. Let the defense stop it, and I'll have a problem. I'd prefer a more vertical game but if that's not what our QB does well, I'm cool as long as he does something well.

IMO Tua hasn't found his ceiling yet and when he plateaus, I'll help you lay the rails to run him out of town on. But I've been a fan for 50 years and the lack of a competitive team for this century doesn't compel me to be greedy when I think the guy we have is good enough, if not great.

But you didn't answer my question.

Aren't you expecting something from Tua that he hasn't shown he can do? Carry a team. Be the driving force of the offense. I don't disagree with almost anything you point to about Tua. Yeah, I agree, the guy should be really good. But he's just never been "the man" in the offense, and if you're expecting him to be that (or at least think it's possible for him to be that), I'd love to hear the reasoning for that belief.

Also, I'll say this...when I watched Tua, I saw a guy throwing catchable balls. They were good throws. But, I often thought that the placement could have been better. But I only found myself thinking critically like that because everyone talks about how crazy accurate Tua is, and I just don't see it.

I'll say this... I'll be ****ING ECSTATIC if McDaniel has a crafty crazy dynamic offense based around athleticism and short passing by Tua with Waddle being a huge part of that. I just don't expect it. Lol

"Carrying the team" is such a fuzzy metric to stand on. I'd submit the list of young QBs who carried their team in the absence of talent is a very short one. A QB can't catch the ball or block for himself.

But I have faith in him reaching that standard because I'm expecting Tua to make correct reads and accurate throws. He's done that. He was a handful of drops from 70% this season and all I want from a QB is the ability to take care of the ball and lead his team. When he's had talent around him, he's proven himself to be a good QB. And although we all agree that the defense won the Ravens game this season, the energy that the team exhibited when Tua entered the game was entirely different and he played a helluva half. I'd suggest that he definitely carried that contest. He also carried the Cardinals game in 2020.

Furthermore, my respect for the Godsey/Studesville Experience is low. Neither of them stood out in previous stints as OCs and neither exonerated himself with the playcalling of this year's team. McDaniel might be blowing a ton of smoke up everybody's butt, but I honestly believe he can scheme Tua into being a top 10 QB. Fact is, Tua had several good games this season. The leap from "not bad" to "good" was encouraging enough to give me faith that he'll leap to being better soon.

It's great to see the disdain in Simms' face and the pain in his voice to say that Tua Tagavailoa can be a successful quarterback in system that suits his skillset.

I'm saying that I've waited more than 20 years for good, so I'll enjoy this until something better comes along. Don't misunderstand: I want a better QB than Tua for my team. Heck, I want a better QB than Aaron Rodgers. But I'll complain when we settle for a bad QB. Again. And I'll also complain when I think the team has the talent to be sustainably competitive but it's my perception that the QB is holding us back. I don't currently perceive that.
