Hopefully the thing they scraped was a live service model.

That loot box service ruined Shadow of War Sequel

From what I understand from talking on the now defunct Bioware boards and reading up on it, the leads, writers and artists had some clear and awesome ideas of where they wanted to take the next chapter, picking up right where the DLC from DA:I left off. They planned it out, had a detailed outline of what they wanted to do, were working on as script, ect. Then things went sideways.

First, EA came in and said that they didn't want it to be a straight RPG with DLC like the other games had been. They wanted to make it have microtransactions and a live element and other nonsense, and they were forced to stop what they were doing.

At basically the same time, EA had also done the exact same thing to Mass Effect. We've read that whole ordeal and how they took what could have been an awesome game, threw it in the trash, and ended up with Andromeda.

Then, they've had all of the nonsense with Anthem over the past couple of years. And they haven't gotten the result out of that that they wanted and thought that they would.

So, those other games going sideways seem to have saved Dragon Age from the same fate, and that's great. But at the same time, its also wasted at least three years of development time, and really more in the early creative stages. And at some point within the past year, they seem to have started again from scratch or close to it, and now we're where we are, with the game probably out around two years from now if things go well. And then we'll see how that goes.

Thank goodness there have been enough other single player, story focused RPGs to come out since DA:I to show the idiot execs what people want and will buy. But too bad that we're getting fewer DA games than we should have been, and they're so far spaced apart.

The next Dragon Age game gets a teaser trailer. No real indication of what it is, or where its going, especially given that the braintrust of Bioware recently left the company. But it lives!

I miss Varic. With that being said Origins was one of the best games I played. DAII was far less enjoyable, and I wasn't able to finish Inquisitions for some reason. Just got bored of it all I think, it's been a while. Plus I hate gathering items for recipes and stuff, so that was a drag, same with Withcher 3. F crafting, so annoying.

Ha! I have such a polar opposite opinion on that. I love crafting, and want it to be a much, much bigger part of the games! To this point, DAI is the only party based RPG that I've ever played where you can craft gear for all of the different party members and actually have those changes show up in game play. Its awesome! I put a lot of time into it.

I enjoyed the idea behind Origins, but I thought that it was a clumsy, crudely made game in a lot of ways. They were still figuring things out. I wish that they had been able to be as productive and make all of the games that they wanted to. DAI should have been at least 4th, not 3rd, and then they should be on #6 by now, if not 7. But it is what it is.

Same. I've seen a lot of people say that lately. After they screwed around with the development of DA:I, ME:A and then the whole experience with Anthem, you'd think that they'd learn something. I guess we'll see.

I know. Its lead to these types of games being rarer period. If you'd told me seven years ago that after DA:I, that almost no one would make a similar game the rest of the PS4s life cycle, id have been shocked, but that's where we are.

Thank goodness Sony is still funding high quality story focused games, but party based RPGs are limited to cartoon style Japanese games lately. I miss them.

Successful ones do but it's always a risky gamble. Players don't have infinite time and it almost feels like a game of musical chairs between live service games at any given time. Some developers breakthrough into the spotlight and end up flush with cash (Apex Legends, Overwatch, Destiny 2) and some get totally choked out a month or two after release (Lawbreakers, Avengers, etc).

As a developer, you're much better off honing and supporting a niche audience with a unique market placement over a long period of time (Division 2, Rainbow Six Siege) then making something similar to a really popular game in an attempt to dethrone or "kill" them (just about any new MOBA vs. Overwatch).

I still just want to play one game, offline, by myself, for about two months at a time. Put 80-150 hours into it, play slowly and methodically, and do it all at my own pace. I tried to do LOTR Online twice and it was just too much and chaotic.

Are you adverse to isometric viewpoints? The Pillars of Eternity series and Divinity series might scratch your itch for western party-based RPGs.

You could also reasonably expect a console release of Baldur's Gate 3 once they get their optimization issues ironed out on PC.

I am adverse, yes. I was thinking about this exact point myself the other day while I was looking into the issue. I just have a hard time enjoying it. It seems so horribly outdated, like you're playing a game from the mid 90s, IMO. I want a game that's either traditional turn based or an action RPG where I can assign a command preference list for my companion's actions. (Like DA:I has). What I absolutely do not want is something where I'm basically observing the battle from above and pausing between each turn while I tell everyone where to go and what to do. I get that's a whole genre that people enjoy, but its really not for me. PC players of Dragon Age Origins often do it that way, and they and I can't really relate to one another, lol.

I looked into Baldur's Gate 3 deeply when it was being announced, because there were aspects of it that I found extremely interesting. I would have even considered playing it on PC. But between the things that we just talked about and the fact that it seems extremely dark and gory, its not for me. Dragon Age is about as dark as I ever want to go.

I mean, if they had only listened to everyone who cares about these games, this could have happened years ago. This is fantastic. Hopefully, it will allow the next DA and ME games to be all that the developers want them to be, and not the half finished or gutted experiences we had the last time through.

I hope so. Publishers do this all the time though. One of the things I have learned about HUGE companies is that they never actually learn lessons. Lessons lower profit chasing.

They've been making these mistakes for a LONG time, too. Mass Effect 3 was released in 2012, and the online features were jammed into that one late in production. It was not Bioware's choice to do it.

Dragon Age 2 came out in 2011, and then DA:I came out three years later. We know that they started production on DA:I almost immediately after 2 was released, and that numerous planned features were removed due to EA getting involved. In the end, they didn't force anything into the game that wasn't already planned, but it delayed production and ended up with less being in the game than should have been. There were some really cool side aspects that I was looking forward to that were cut.

And then we know what happened with ME:A......

So, its been a decade of this crap. And every time they've stuck their dirty fingers into things, it hasn't worked. We can only hope that they'll do it less, and let the creative people just make a great game that the rest of us want to buy. I mean, millions of people can't wait to fork over $70 for the game and more for DLC. Just let us pay you for it, lol.

Before DA:I came out, the guys in charge were open about a plan for at least seven games. They had the outline all planned out and was just the details as they went along they'd need to work out.

This console generation has been such a huge kick in the groin for this stuff.

So, there's apparently a believable rumor that DA:4 will be out at the end of 2023. The article below is the first one I've read in a long time that acknowledges that Bioware was working on a version of the game for years that was scrapped. (In reality, they've started over at least twice from scratch, since they keep losing the creative leads for various reasons).

More rumors suggest that the game is still targeting a late 2023 window, though that could of course get delayed. Its good to know that things are moving along.

Also, apparently Bioware/EA has no plans to make a remastered version of the Dragon Age trilogy like they did Mass Effect, which is sad.

    https://www.psu.com/news/new-dragon-age-is-right-in-the-middle-of-production-says-bioware/

Bioware has now confirmed that they are "right in the middle" of production with DA4. So, the late 2023 window might be viable after all.

Left unsaid is that they've started completely over with the game at least twice, and this is only the most current version of the game to date. Its so sad that the original creators of the game - now all gone from the company - had hoped to make it a 7-part series, and 4 should have been out many years ago.

    https://www.psu.com/news/mass-effect-5-is-in-prototyping-phase-reveals-bioware/

In other Bioware news, Mass Effect 4 is only at the very, very start of its production cycle. I've not read about how much might have been done on paper/art up to this point that was trashed, but that's still where we stand. Its going to be a long time before it sees a release, maybe not until the end of the new console lifecycle.

I actually very, very rarely rode mounts in DAI. I even got the preorder bonus of the fancy deer as one, but I found that walking was almost always the best way to go.

BTW, since its been a year since we've talked about this one here, I'm a mixture of grateful and anxious, knowing that it will eventually be out, hopefully next year. Its been more than eight years now since DAI was not only the last game in the series, but the last major AAA party based RPG by anyone! My favorite genre is clinging by a thread and Bioware is one of the only saviors. I am befuddled that in the entire video game industry, not a single company has chosen to make another similar game other than Greedfall, now three years old itself.

There are a lot of indie RPGs. Heck, I just played through Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga. Pretty good story and reminded me of Orge Tactics.

Though I think Midnight Suns is an offshoot of a party-based RPG.

I think the AAA games industry is not very good at this point in time overall. However, there are more good indie's then there are able to play.

I've got to have third person, 3d, behind the character perspective though. After 25 years of being used to it, I just can't go back.

I've tried Pillars of Eternity and a few other isometric games off of PS+, and I just can't do it.

And I just have no interest at all in really small games.

has it really been 25 years? Sheesh, time flies. You young whipper snappers with your 3d. Back in my day RPGs were 2D and we liked it!

It depends on how liberal you want to be with the terminology. There were absolutely 3D over the shoulder games that I was playing on the PS1 25 years ago. Whether you want to consider FF7 to be that way is a matter of opinion. Its sort of a hybrid between the old, flat 2D and what came afterwards on the PS2.

If you want to be really strict, then FFX came out 22 years ago, and that one was absolutely 3D over the shoulder for navigation. I've pointed it out over the years as the point where I personally can't go backwards from. It, or games like it, are as far as I can go and still enjoy it. And at this point, its almost exactly half of my life, lol. Since it came out, I've very rarely done anything that wasn't set up with that kind of camera angle, so its hard to adjust otherwise. I'm so used to using the Dual Shock thumbsticks to move the character and camera around that its really frustrating when I can't.

Well, that reads like a horror story. I have a difficult time thinking that Bioware would willingly do that, and even the bosses at EA would have to know that they would enrage their player base by releasing a game like that, and almost certainly put an end to the series. If that was their plan, why even make a game so long after the previous one?

No party control, after I've been dying for it to be the next AAA party based RPG is like a steak to the heart.

it is what EA does. I didn't play Dead Space, but they ruined it by taking a horror franchise and trying to action it up. It is not outside of their wheel house.
