I would’ve liked to put the Tag on Ogbah. Gesicki could’ve been replaced by drafting a better receiver.
I think that this was well played by the Dolphins. Gesicki is definitely a really good player, but he really does not fit our scheme. In a sense, we are gonna get to find out a lot about McDaniel. In my mind, there are two types of coaches. There are the system coaches that build and work within a particular system and coaches that build a system around players. To an extent, we know that McDaniel is a system coach, but he is a smart guy. I think the franchise tag will be a relatively efficient way to see if McDaniel can find a role for Gesicki that is worth his salary. If not, there is no financial implications beyond this year. Also, if things are not working, he is a candidate for an in-season trade.
The whole where he lines up thing is silly. If he wants WR money be a WR. And if positions are going to be determined by alignment then just make him line up on the line every single snap and motion out to where the play calls for Argument didn’t work for Graham cuz it’s a dumb argument
I can't see that working out tbh. While he is a pass catcher, he's not a WR and doesn't really play like one. There have been many pass catching primary TEs, none of whom are considered a WR. I would think it's just the value of the tag. It's pretty modest for a TE, especially if you consider Mike one of the top 5-6 guys, who make in the $14mil/yr range. For Ogbah, we would be paying almost $18 million, which is probably more than he will make on the open market. I'd suspect he will get a deal somewhere in the Trey Hendrickson range of $15/yr.
Yeah but what if Gesicki does a grievance that he played mostly WR? It would be such a dolphin move lol.
"And some long term security". 'And' as in 'so that' or 'as well as'? I don't begrudge Gesicki, or anyone else, trying to get as much money as they can. However, the way this journalist phrases it - 'long term security'... that's not really it. Take a lower amount and you can negotiate for a nice long contract. Then again, this guy in his twenties, like all other players, will earn vastly more in one contract than most of the planet have over their entire lives. So terming it as 'security' is a bit of a misnomer. He already has plenty for security. This is maximising earnings, is what it is. And more power to him. But it's not 'security' in any real world sense.
He would likely lose outright, but he may also just use it as leverage for a more balanced longer term deal. By most accounts, the franchise tag was placed to lock him into negotiating with us. Dallas is doing the same with Dalton Shultz. Neither really want their guy to go elsewhere, but also we aren't paying top WR money for a TE, which Mike is without a doubt. I see it as much career security as financial security. Unless they are dumb, they aren't living paycheck to paycheck, but any one play could be the last one of their career, so it's security to sign a longer term deal that will still pay them out some money in the event of a career ending injury. Being on the franchise tag is a risk. Though he seems to have mostly recovered his form, Dak is the poster for that risk.
I like Gesicki, and I’m pleased that he will (seemingly) be a Dolphin for at least another season. It will be good for Tua to have a familiar target, as he familiarises himself with McDaniel's system.
I agree. Hopefully we can just stick with one OC or offensive scheme for more than 1 year. Having people he's familiar with should help.
I would think on the official paperwork filed with the NFL it says “Tight End” position on there somewhere. If he somehow appeals and wins WR status . I think Miami would atleast have the option to decline that contract. Since they never filed paperwork tagging him as a wideout. (Making him a free agent).
Where I’m trying to get at is that Ogbah is a lot more valuable than Gesicki. You can draft a WR or sigh a guy like Lazard.
Good deal for both sides really. If Gesicki thrives in the McDaniel offense, then you get a long-term deal done, but if not, you let him walk in 2023. I think our new coach finds a way to use him effectively though (with a bit more blocking effort from Gesicki) and he becomes a favorite target for Tua.
Seeing how these sports agents make a killing on their commissions, I wonder how much of this has to do with Gisecki’s agent and not so much Gisecki himself?
I mean, if your boss offered to pay you 40% less than what others are making at your position because you answer the phones for a few hours on Friday, would you be okay with that? I can't think of anyone who would be. Gisecki started pointing out to reporters last year that he played mostly slot, and by the end of the season he was correcting them weekly that he's not really a TE anymore. So its a pretty good guess that he'll file the appeal and try to snag another $5-6M for the season- who wouldn't if that's the position they play 85% of the time?
You’re correct but what I’m trying to say is if the Phins tagged him Bc it’s cheaper than Ogbah then it would be a dolphin move. Instead of just tagging Ogbah.
Overpaid for a year but it’s all good, he can man the #4 receiver position.. Can’t block...just can’t...cant separate, easy cover, can’t outmuscle for position, can’t run after the catch, can’t run routes with any precision. But he is tall, he can jump out of the gym, he’s got great length And great hands. Tua needs to zero in on that elite catch radius and exploit it..
This is the reason the dolphins are the dolphins. Ogbah is a lot more valuable to the team than Gesicki. Should’ve tagged Ogbah.
In fairness the $$ value was not the same. 10.8ish for Geisiki vs 18.5ish for Ogbah? Also we aren’t privy to contract talks with Ogbah. They could be 1 or 2 million apart on a multi year deal at below that 18 million number. We don’t know what Ogbah is asking and that could play a factor in decision. Of course I agree, all things being equal. Ogbah is significantly more important to the team.
Money wise you’re right but if Gesicki gets his money as a WR at 18 mil than it would’ve been a royal mistake for us. Even worse if we remove the tag on Gesicki and we let both walk.
All that angst and then Mike signs his TE tag and then we sign Ogbah back on a solid deal (well below the DE tag).
If I was a player, I'd pull my hair out over players giving hometown discounts. Seeing as a franchise tag can be impacted by the highest salaries, players taking one for the team also help other teams hose their best players. To wit: Tom Brady did right by his teammates in New England but screwed Kirk Cousins over when Washington found it easier to tag him two years in a row. Don't get me wrong, I might do it if it meant I had a better chance at a chip. But the economics of the game impact players and give teams extra bargaining power. With that being said, taking $25 million instead of $28 million would be a great moral dilemma to deal with personally. But I'd tell my agent to squeeze the blood out of every rock he sees.
Yeah, I tend to forget there is the human side of things. I’m sure south Florida lures people to stay even if it’s less than what others may offer.
