Based on Mercedes’ spending this year I suspect they will be super competitive next year. I am rooting for Lewis next year. But will also root for George at Merc and also McLaren. Big Norris fan. And Ricciardo.

I used to like Max - his race in the rain at Austin a few years ago is still some of the best, if not the best, driving I’ve seen. But not a big fan so much anymore as I think he crosses the edge way too often.

Bottom line, Lewis deserved the win, and Max deserved the Championship in my opinion.

The aftermath of this final race is just beginning.

Norris: Race director’s lapped cars decision ‘was for TV’
    2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
    Posted on
    12th December 2021, 18:35 | Written by Ida Wood

Lando Norris says the decision by FIA race director Michael Masi to allow only a limited number of drivers to unlap themselves behind the safety car late in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was “for the TV” spectacle.

Rather than allowing lapped cars to pass, as is often procedure, race control informed teams they would be staying in formation while behind the safety car.

However, that decision was very quickly reversed once the initial decision was communicated to drivers, but only for the five lapped cars sat between the top two title contenders. At the front of that group of lapped cars was Norris, who gave his verdict on the unprecedented race control decision and final lap restart.

“I don’t know what decisions were made based upon things the stewards said in the first place,” Norris explained.

“If that [decision to maintain order] then made Lewis or made Mercedes make the decision to not box, but then later on they suddenly said now they’re allowed to overtake, then I guess that’s not acceptable.

“I don’t know exactly what was said or what was done or so on [in race control], but a controversial end, that’s all I can say.”

Norris said he was surprised when he got the green light from the FIA to pass Hamilton and the safety car, suggesting it was a decision made purely to create an entertaining finish to the race.

“I didn’t actually know it was only the first three or four up to Max [going past],” Norris said. “So it was obviously made to be a fight. It was for the TV, of course. It was for the result. Whether or not it was fair, it’s hard for me to decide.”

In answer to a question from RaceFans about if he was surprised about the first message too, which told drivers not to pass the safety car, he added: “Sometimes they let you go, sometimes they don’t. It’s just fifty-fifty, half the time.

“But the call, they said they’re not going to let us pass. So I’m guessing that was a message to say they were just not going to let us pass at all. But then to suddenly do it just for the final lap and for a one-lap shootout, I’m a bit surprised by.”

Yes, interesting and different concepts. Yet I still wonder what is real and what is fake.
merc looks fast, but probably because its' the common look. But if they really can cool the engine with that design, they should have some top end.
And opposed to the Ferraris front wing, their concept seems to make the most sense re the verturi tunnels. But what do I know, such a fascinating complex thing.
I just hope for great racing with more than just two drivers at the top and no ****ty "officiating".

Agreed. Masi gone and that needed to happen.

It'll be interesting to see all these different concepts on track. Other than Ferrari's sidepods, their low drag front wing is the most intriguing aspect of the car to me, and their philosophy varies from the norm more so than any other car on the grid.

Merc does look lean and mean as well.

    Should be an interesting year.

Hey guys, haven't been following much of the offseason stuff, but am very much looking forward to this weekend's activities as we head back for round 1 of the 2022 f1 season. FYI, Drafkings now offers fantasy betting on F1!!! So check that out if you're into that sort of thing!

Did f1 update their rules with respect to penalties handed out for in race violations? That whole thing last year, last two races, was ridiculous. Especially the next to last race (which has kind of gone forgotten since the last race was very controversial). The whole letting the car back ahead of you if you've passed them incorrectly needs revamping. They should just make it a drive thru penalty (in the pits)... but then I guess that could be too damaging if other cars get around you and you lose more than one spot. Clearly Verstappen wanted Luis to go around him at a certain point in that track so he could be setup to pass him again. So that really needs to be looked at. Not easy I guess heh...

That was some race weekend! Congrats to Ferrari who appear to be "back." I don't really root for any driver or team, I'm a bit neutral I guess. But I have found myself rooting AGAINST Max recently. And was very happy to see him go from 2nd to the back on a mechanical issue. His audio during the race is a part of the reason why I found myself rooting against him. He's such a whiny baby. Don't get me wrong, he's an incredible driver with elite talent... but he should be nicer to his team.

I'm the opposite. I started off disliking Max and am starting to like him more and more. I personally think Lewis is more of a whiner on the radio.

Telemetry data suggests Ferrari have a great all round package and potentially superior engine to Honda and Mercedes. However, the Merc is showing great pace even though they had to compromise their package to limit porpoising - heavy downforce rear wing and raised ride height. They have great potential and a lot of pace to unlock if they can get their concept to work. They'll be right up there with F and RB in my opinion.

Championship will be defined by whoever has the better development over the course of the season. Everyone is just still understanding their cars.

McLaren, what is you doing baby?

Loving the new cars. Loving the mix up of the order on the grid now too; and the racing so far after 2 races has been entertaining between Max and Charles. Interesting how they can race hard against each other without coming together so far.

Nice to see Ferrari back; Red bull looks like they'll be strong again this year which is impressive considering how that championship run should have hurt their chances this year like it has for Mercedes. Speaking of Mercedes; it's so nice to see them struggling. Haas running well is great to see too. I've got to say though the biggest disappointment for me outside of McLaren is Aston Martin. I really expected that Aston Martin would be all in on developing a strong new car considering they never really developed anything after the pink mercede's ordeal. Yet here they are struggling to get out of Q3. We'll get a better idea of that car once Seb comes back now I think though; but it's not looking good for the team. Lawrence Stroll is going to ruin the history of that brand under his ownership. Why he hasn't realized by now that his expertise and success in the fashion business has nothing to do with his ability to run a Formula 1 race team. He's F1's version of Stephen Ross. A bit clueless; trying to run the show without always being around and without really having a clue what needs to be done despite thinking he does due to success in other area's. Its pretty crazy.

all of the merc engines have struggled, that's Aston Martin / Mclaren / Williams (of course) / and Mercedes. Ferrari really seem to be ahead of the game and anyone running their engines is seemingly doing well, Alfa Romeo and Haas really benefitting. Australia should be fun.

Same here!! Not a bad flight here for me. I was hoping to go to the Montreal race this year, but I'll be out in Whistler BC that weekend for a work function and then im flying my wife out to spend a few extra days. I had no idea that was the F1 Montreal weekend. Had I known I'd have declined the free trip to go to Montreal! Next year though; we're either doing Vegas or Montreal. If anyone here has an interest in an F1 race in Montreal but isn't sure... I'll say this. DO IT. Montreal is an incredible city. Went there a few years ago for the first time; was worried about the fact I can't really speak french, but everywhere we went in both new and old Montreal everyone greeted us in both english and french and however we responded to them was the language they carried on the conversation in. But the city, the food, the people; it's just a fantastic city and I can't wait to go back. We were there the week before the F1 race, and the buzz in and around the city for the race was crazy!

Ex-F1 driver Martin Brundle, now a commentator for Sky Sports here in the UK, runs around during the grid walk trying to interview people from the racing world and celebrities. In today's race in Miami, he was getting told in his earpiece that Patrick Mahomes was ahead of him...so he ran ahead shouting "Patrick, Patrick!", and this happened :laughy:

yeah with all this interest in the US for F1 and more US races, i really hope ESPN stays with Croft and Brundle and doesn't bring in their own American team. The current ESPN contract with F1 ends this year and I'll be curious to see about the extension.

Sorry, should've been more clear. I get Sky through an IPTV box on the big screen and streaming websites when watching on my CPU.

I have used a VPN to tap into the UK market to watch some of their YouTube content that is region locked though.

I see ESPN re-upped with F1 last week for the next few years. They haven't made an announcement, but I'm fearing it is only a matter of time until here in the US, we get commercials forced down our throats.
I stopped following F1 years ago for a while, just got back into it a few years ago again and a large part of what I liked is under 2 hour races with zero commercial breaks.

Agree with all on Sky sports maintaining coverage. It’s a phenomenal team of commentators.

Great race in the British GP yesterday. Craziness. I do like the ability of cars to follow behind better this year. However, they still need changes, imo. There still are only 2-3 dominant teams and I’d like to see some others more heavily in the mix. and it still is challenging to pass. Esp. Without DRS.

But also, as someone argued (Button or Chandhok? I think the latter), the cars could be about a 1/4 lighter and smaller. Just too big. And some engine evolution. Having them louder would be fantastic.

Very exciting race. That action after the SC restart was insane. Leclerc passing on the outside of Copse with a damaged end plate and used and cold hard tires against HAM's new softs? Damn, top 3 driver on the grid. Too bad Ferrari strategy f'd Leclerc, again.

    Happy for Sainz.

Merc is back? We'll see in Austria. Silverstone is perfect track for Merc as they've been the fastest car in medium and fast corners since Race 1. Hard to gauge just how far they've come, but HAM had blazing race pace in that Merc.

Glad Zhou is OK. Scary stuff.

I'm hoping that is true of Mercedes, that their car excels in those Medium and fast corners. Why? That would mean that on SOME tracks they have the 'best car', on others Red Bull has the best car, and yet on others it is Ferrari.
The greatest thing I could hope for as a Fan of F1 is to have a different team be favored or have the best chance of winning based on the track, not having the same team have the best car all the time.
Still would love to see some of the bottom teams compete more. Its ok if they don't compete for the Title, but if an Aston Martin or an Alpine or Haas (or ANY of them for that matter) could on occasion qualify in the top 3-4 and even win a race without all of the tops teams retiring, that would make every race must watch for me.

I typically watch the GP's on delay out here on the west coast (by choice, as I tend to sleep in on a Sunday morning ). So I was behind when that Zhou crash occurred and had to leave the house for a road trip. I fast forwarded to make sure he was okay and was late getting to my destination. Scary crash indeed. There were fans in the first few rows in that stand ducking when they saw the car get airborne! I bet they saw their life flash in front of their eyes. Yeah, and amazing that Zhou appears to be okay, they just had a difficult time getting him out. I don't like that the coverage doesn't show the crash until after we find out the driver is okay. Selfishly, I want to see the crash and as long as we're not seeing something gory, just show the crash. (there's differing opinions on what is and what isn't gory of course). It's the same thing with a pitch invader in soccer (or football what have you), the tv won't show them. But they'll show a high speed chase live... I digress!!

The action towards the end of the race was incredible. the position changes. That's really something we don't typically see in a "normal" F1 race... particularly the French GP

There was something about this weeks race in Austria that just seemed missing. A few passes for the lead, some reliability drama at the end for the leaders, and a LOT of action mid-pack. Everything you need for a good race yet I couldn't get into this. Just something seemed missing that the race didn't seem as good or as enjoyable as the others this season.
