The Boys is pretty fun; I'm watching season 3 now as it comes out. It sort of reminds me of what Blue Mountain State was as a football show- it focuses on football and there's good stuff to be seen, but it's way over the top in humor and general shock value. That's what The Boys is as a superhero flick. If you like dark humor and a glimpse at how cynical/detached superheroes would eventually become, it's a lot of fun.

If you're a reader, then the Reacher books are worth the investment...great storytelling and honestly, good practical advice as well. Reacher is the ultimate nomad and not tied down to anything; not a life I'd want to live, but certainly intriguing. The author does a great job of breaking down concepts so they really drive home. Like if Reacher gets into a fight, he always drops the biggest guy by going for maximum damage with the least amount of effort. Then it explains why, how others will react, how he'll follow that natural motion to take out the 2nd guy with minimal effort, etc...almost like the psychology of fighting. I've always loved that stuff- Lee Child is a master at it.

Between the two, I'd watch Reacher 1st.

I've read all but the last couple Reacher books. Was really put out about Tom Cruise buying the rights and making the movies with himself playing Reacher.

The Amazon series is a much better representation but even as big as Alan Ritchson is, you'd pretty much have to cast JJ Watt in the role to truly capture the size and strength Reacher's character possesses.

Conversely, I'd always loved James Lee Burke's "Dave Robicheaux" books and character. There's been two movies starring Alec Baldwin and Tommy Lee Jones, but neither was really right and you can't do those movies without also casting someone to play Clete. That said "Heaven's Prisoners" was the better of the two movies.

Watch Prey. In my opinion, it's excellent. Maybe it's because I watched it with low expectations. I was lucky enough to watch the Comanche and French language version, which I'd recommend over the casual English version I've seen in YouTube clips. I'm going to watch it again before the week is out.

Watched the Stallone film Samaritan on Prime, featuring our very own Jared Odrick! Ok film, nothing to write home about, but Odrick does a decent acting job. He certainly looks like an actor, rather that a football player doing a cameo, and will be interesting to see if he appears in other major(ish) films after it.

Yeah I saw it awhile back as well. Made by the same director as John Wick I believe, and there are some stylistic similarities, especially with the fighting. But it's set up as kind of a train murder mystery type thing and has a lot more comedic elements. Definitely a solid watch and quite enjoyable though.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is a fun comedy. A lot of fun cameos. Danielle Radcliff gives an excellent performance.

While enjoyable I just didn't find it laugh-out-loud funny like I did Walk Hard. Entertaining biopic, especially if you are a fan of Weird Al, which I am.

That's good to know. I was a huge fan of Al in the 80s and 90s. I like Radcliff, but I've been having a hard time seeing him in the role.

He is perfect for the role. Because it is a "serious" telling of the story. Which is a big part of the joke. If you liked the Funny Or Die Trailer that came out 10 years ago, you will like this movie. Plus it is free on Roku TV.

I watched Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and I have to say that is a really good movie. Angela Bassett is amazing in it. Like seriously deserves an Emmy nomination.

The movie isn't perfect, but it is really really good. I enjoyed it. I don't think I will watch it again in theaters because I think the movie is a bummer. If you recently had a loss in your life, you will probably cry multiple times in this movie. The movie is about processing loss and grief. Which I think the actors do a great job with because they are dealing with loss and grief. So many scenes felt like the director saying, "Think of what Chadwick Bozeman means to you, and no go!"

    On a scale of -5 to 5, I give this movie a solid 4.

A few recent watches, both involving Daniel Craig coincidentally.

The Glass Onion: Knives Out story. Another good, fun murder mystery. The setting was quite a bit different from the first (a billionaire island paradise with his whacky friends vs. the original small town family) so the characters felt a bit more caricatured, but it was pretty solid anyway. I really hope they keep that franchise going and manage to keep it interesting and fresh.

No Time to Die, the semi-recent Bond flick and final of Craig's Bond anthem. I thought it was overall a good entry, Rami Malek does creepy very well even if his character wasn't really interesting or fleshed out much. I could do without more poisoned and scarred villains though. I am, however, not sure if I approve of the ending or not. But it was worth the streaming watch.

Speaking of Knives out and Glass Onion, is anyone else bothered by the picture quality of these movies? When I watched Knives Out on Blu Ray, the movie had a grainy "static-like" quality to it that was very distracting. Like watching something on an old antenna that doesn't fully come in clearly, or a bad VHS transfer to DVD.

It was the only HD movie I'd ever watched with that quality, and I'd largely forgotten about it until I watched the extended trailer for Glass Onion, and it had the exact same look. Is this intentional for some reason? It can't be a coincidence.

Saw Strange World on D+. It was fine. Nothing extraordinary but it was certainly enjoyable. It is not a musical (such as Encanto or Frozen) but just a straight adventure movie and lots of themes of parent/child relationships and generational traits and learning.

I can definitely see why it struggled in theater while being super popular on TV though.

My family watched it last month and I felt the same. It was visually good, but the story was really weak. Voice acting here and there. Along with Encanto and Raya and the Last Dragon, this was their third straight one where I've felt this way. And Ralf Breaks the Internet was the same back in 2018 as well.

This came after a long string of really good ones in Tangled, Wreck it Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero Six, Zootopia and Moana. As a parent of small kids, we watched all of those over and over. Then they really lost their fastball other than Frozen 2, which was very well done. But they went through a really, really weak period from 2002-2009 where they all basically stunk, which itself followed a very strong period, so they have a history of ebbs and flows.

I watched The Missing Link, the stopmotion movie from Laika, and enjoyed it. Visually, its exceptionally strong, as they continue to build on their work with each new movie, pushing the envelope for the genre higher and further. The story was perhaps predictable, but still strong, and did what it needed to do, and the pacing of the humor and whit was very well thought out. A very solid B+ effort, with a very strong cast in Hugh Jackman, Zack Galafanikas, Zoe Zaldena, and others.

My kids didn't care for it, but its a solid PG family movie. Perhaps more in the vein of late 80s/early 90s movies in style that I grew up on myself.

A few more recent watches of non-new films.

Firstly, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. I liked it. Very reminiscent of the Detective Pikachu in terms of general tone and vibe, not to mention style. PG enough for smaller kids (my 7 year old loved it) while being amusing enough to hold adults. Also some nice bits of nostalgia if you are familiar with the actual Sonic games.

The other was finally popping on Wakanda Forever. It was a solid entry into the Marvel Universe, but dang that franchise misses its king. Chadwick was so good in the role and while Wright did better than I thought she might (I didn't like her character), it wasn't Chadwick. Bassett was excellent taking a larger role, and the villian Tenoch Huerta was also quite interesting. And the costume designs for both the Wakandans and new Talokans was on point. Going for the Aztec vibe instead of Atlantean was a good choice imo, gave differentiation from the - imo - more lackluster DC counterpart and made it more vibrant. Good movie, but I couldn't help but think how it would have been better with Chadwick Boseman. :(

I went to the cinema twice this week with my family.

First, we saw Dungeons & Dragons, which is a lot of fun. They do a solid job mixing action and comedy, and mixing practical effects with CGI into a film that moves the entire time and makes you care about the characters. Its not an epic, unforgettable movie, but it honors the source material, is clever and is clearly made by people who are fans. Its written, directed and produced by John Francis Daley, who I enjoyed on Freaks and Geeks and Bones, and has transitioned from acting to behind the camera work. It has its share of violence and death, but its all on the scale of something like LOTR or Marvel, and there's really nothing inappropriate for kids, while still being great for adults.

Then yesterday we saw the Super Mario Brothers movie, and I basically felt the same way as I did D&D. The animation is top notch and honors the series, and all of the characters are done in a way that's in line with their general vibe from the video games. Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Seth Rogan, Charlie Day, Fred Arminsen and Keegan Michael Kay are all voice acting veterans and goofballs, so I didn't really worry about them doing a solid job. Anya Taylor Joy I was less sure of because I just don't have much exposure to what she's done and she has a really strange, uptight feel, but she did a good job as Peach too. The cast list is also filled with prominant voice actors in "additional voices" roles, so it looks like they worked hard to make sure even the small parts were done properly.

We also watched Jungle Cruise on Disney+, and it was fine. Its basically a mashup of The Mummy with the first Uncharted video game, shot and written like a Spielberg movie from the 80s. Dwayne Johnson plays The Rock, as he always does, and is the same as he always is. Emily Blunt is good in a role that would have been typical in movies 30-40 years ago, but felt dated now, although it really seemed like that was intentional.

The trailer makes the art style look much....rougher, if that's the right word. I guess I'll wait until I see the whole movie to judge, but it seems a very odd direction to me.

I love the art style. It seems to be very inspired by Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse and Klaus. There are a lot of scenes that could be freeze-framed and then printed out to be works of art to hang on the wall. Especially scenes with The Big Bad Wolf.

The art style might not be for you, personal taste and all, however, I thought it was fantastic.

It did remind me of Into the Spiderverse from what I saw, certainly. But I figured Spiderman was made in that weird way to make it stand out and look like a comic book. It wouldn't have been a choice I'd have made for just about anything else. I'm not a "rough edges" guy, lol.

A lot of animated kids movies, nowadays, are very homogenized and inoffensive/safe with their art direction so the Puss 2 direction was a breath of fresh air when I saw the trailer. I like the mixture of 2d and 3d in any capacity.

You've also seen that homogenized trend bucked in great success through Love, Death, & Robots and Arkane, both on Netflix and both series that I highly enjoy.

I think you'd really enjoy Arkane but I'm not sure LD&R is for you, if I'm gauging your tastes correctly.

LD&R is much more mature, anthologized (each episode is a standalone one-off story), sometimes cringey, but the highs even out the lows. I'm just a big supporter of a format where small, independent animation companies are able to get their names out there.

There is definitely a space for adult-aimed animated features.

    Some cool, unrelated, animated shorts:

Yeah, its certainly darker and harder edge looking than what I typically go for. And I'm also big into long-term, and long-form shows, where the storyline is the same thing over many episodes, season after season. Its honestly frustrating for me that a lot of shows are only 8-10 episodes even for "normal" ones any more.

It is not as stylized as Spiderman in the sense it doesn't look like a comic book.

But it does look like a piece of art. The "rough edges" really help when it comes to emoting and action. It is able to do what it needs to do to set the scene.

IMO, the art direction for Shrek and even Toy Story is very bland. It was cool when it was new, but I don't think it really looks good for all movies. I am really enjoying the post-Spider-Man/Klaus era where CGI cartoons are starting to look like stylized cartoons again instead of moving CGI models.

I wouldn't call myself a Mario expert, but I don't know if that's true or not. Perhaps it's truer to the newer games, but I wouldn't have thought Toad so outgoing, and generally didn't like DK (not because of voice) though I am not saying he wasn't true to character. You're definitely right that the animation is top notch. I thought all the voice acting was generally fine, but nothing spectacular.

I was genuinely not sure why Mario was there to do anything though, as I felt like Peach should have been able to handle it. She was more agile and dexterous, a better driver, a better diplomat, and seemingly more cunning. If she had access to power ups she could have beat DK (though she obviously didn't think she could), and could have beat Bowser with the super star too. Kind of like Indiana Jones in the lost ark movie, the titular character kind of wasn't needed (in the Mushroom Kingdom).

On an unrelated note, it looks like the underground pipes burst (well the valve they were going for) when it exceeded 2 Bar of pressure. Even at 2 Bar gauge, I don't feel like that's much pressure at all for a liquid. Most pipes and valves that follow ASTM guidelines should be able to handle multiples of that (like 10 bar would be the very low end) as long as the temperature isn't well beyond boiling (like Mario's skin would have melted off at the temperatures that would cause a flange to fail at 2 bar).

We were also wondering how old they must have been to be able to pick up a trade (plumbing), when they presumably had a full time job previously working for a (tow) wrecking crew.

A sentence that I never thought I would write, "Though it is no Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Dungeons and Dragons is a very delightful movie."

I just watched the DnD movie in theaters and it was delightful. A fun fantasy movie with really good jokes and heart. I laughed out loud many times in the movie. I think it is a movie that I can put on a rotation of movies to watch just when I feel like just enjoying a movie.

Going to a double-feature this Sunday; Beau is Afraid and Evil Dead Rise.

Beau is Afraid's runtime is very long. It better use all of that time effectively. Back when I was a snooty teen, long movies = artsy value and critical themes. Now that I'm older, they better respect my time, lol.
