The Browns may need an extra body at quarterback for the start of the 2022 season and they’re reportedly looking at a few options this week.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that two of those options are AJ McCarron and Josh Rosen. Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs are the current backups to Deshaun Watson, who is facing a potential suspension under the Personal Conduct Policy.

McCarron tore his ACL while playing for the Falcons in the preseason last year. The 2014 Bengals fifth-round pick appeared in 11 games and started three times during his time in Cincinnati before moving on to stints with the Raiders and Texans. He also started one game in Houston.

Rosen was the 10th overall pick in 2018, which put him nine spots behind former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Cardinals picked him, but traded him to the Dolphins after picking Kyler Murray the next year and he wound up in Atlanta as Matt Ryan‘s backup after McCarron’s injury last season.

Huh, good news for him. Last I heard, he was playing in one of the new semi-pro leagues, and I don't think he was a starter. The kid does have talent and he's still young, so hopefully he can get some redemption and another shot at an NFL career. We certainly didn't do him any favors.

Edit- I just read another wrinkle in the Rosen saga. Two seasons ago, he was on the Bucs practice squad before being signed by Atlanta. Normally, all players on the team at any point in the year get a ring for being part of the Super Bowl run, but that doesn't apply to practice squad players who get picked up by other teams. So the poor guy was almost a Super Bowl champion but lost out for getting promoted by Atlanta. All the other Bucs practice squad players got rings.

Chris Grier traded a second round pick for Rosen and still kept his job. Let that sink in.

There were people on this site saying it was a mistake when we cut Rosen. Let that sink in.

I still feel that way. He's only 25 today and was an ultra-cheap backup that could have been developed over three years. Maybe he washes out, but he was barely making more (from Miami) than our current rookie QB is today. I feel like Rosen could have played the same role Brissett did last year...which is not much.

Nothing against Brissett, of course, but when you don't protect your QBs its silly to blame the QB. So if we really didn't care if Rosen got slaughtered out there as a backup, why cut him, LOL? He seemed like the ideal QB2 for what we were doing on offense.

    Consider this if you will…

Rosen was drafted 10th overall by a dumpster fire of a team in the Cardinals who couldn’t lead a drop of rain to the ground.

We picked up Rosen with a new head coach whom we’ve learned really had no true interest in the offensive side of the ball and had no desire to even TRY to develop Tagovailoa…as evident by the entire happy ending Watson saga.

I’m willing to say outright that with the right team…the right coaching staff, Rosen could very well have developed into a damned fine quarterback.

In Josh Rosen’s first 16 starts (a full season at the time) he did not once post a passer rating higher than the league average. Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russel, and Nathan Peterman all managed at least 1 game with an above average passer rating in their first 16 starts. Rosen is the only player since at least 1978 to achieve that lowlight. He has extended his streak to 20 consecutive starts without breaking the league average.
He has played in 24 games and in no single game has he made a passer rating equal to the NFL average, that’s including games where he made 2 or 3 passes.
In Atlanta last year he went 2-11-0-2 for a season passer rating of 0.0

Lol there are many others on this site that kept spinning it as just a fifth round pick, that the second round pick was just some leftover second rounders and didnt mean anything.

Rostered QBs will include ... Jacoby Brissett, Rosen and Dobbs.

    That's some rough back ups.

My God, for real? The Cardinal were a DUMPSTER FIRE of a team not only that season but the previous seasons as well. Steve Wilks and staff lasted all of one season THEY were so bad!

Then where did Rosen go? To Miami as a backup to Fitzpatrick during Flores’ first season…with a completely gutted roster and ZERO expectations of winning and an OC in Gailey who came back to coaching ONLY to work with Fitzpatrick…only to be let go at the end of the season after we drafted Tua.

Rosen’s NFL career was doomed from jump street being on such terrible teams with terrible coaching staffs

Brissett will yet again find himself as a starter in this league. Unbelievable the opportunities this guy gets! He's quite possibly THE WORST Quarterback I have ever seen get multiple opportunities as a starter. I've seen backups get a crack at playing time only to suck so bad that you never see them again, but Biscuit just keeps popping up as a starter.

Ive seen him play on other teams and he was always a solid backup and a solid starter. Last season for whatever reason, he was just sloppy and looked pathetic.

One is a highly paid NFL executive and the other are keyboard jockey’s, some of whom have never played a down of football. See the difference

JaMarcus Russel has a career passer rating of 65.2 compared to Rosen’s 61.1
Ryan Leaf has career passer rating of 50.0, which he set when the league average passer rating was about 78. Rosen’s passer rating of 61.1 was set when the league average is around 90.

That makes Rosen’s career performance to date as worse than JaMarcus Russel and about the same as Ryan Leaf. A bad situation can put you in a hole, but to hit bedrock you have to do a bit of digging on your own.

Funny we should still be debating Rosen this far down the road. Oh well. Might he have developed into a better QB with better coaching and support? Almost assuredly. Would he have improved enough to be a quality starter? We will never know. A quality back-up? That we will not know either, though in my personal opinion, I think there was a reasonable chance of that. Though there are not enough reps to groom a rookie QB AND a young back-up in the same camp.

    I wish him well.
