Cue the inevitable awkward questions to both about things they never had control over. I don't think this will affect them for very long, other than having to say they have no comment on it. But it kills my attitude about next year's draft. Ross's entitled *ss sucks.

Florio is going to be insufferable.

And worse, the league docks Watson 6 games for abuse, and take 2 picks away from the Dolphins, including a 1st. Which one is more damaging to a team's efforts?

My baseball team is world champions. My hockey team had a rough season but committed ownership who just built a brand new rink and saw the team win the 3rd most playoff rounds in the nhl the last 4 years. My football team? A ceaseless carousel of feint optimism and then utter embarrassment.

Looks like you're not allowed to tank, but apparently, trying to tank is okay with the league as long as it didn't work. Flo & the Boys put up too strong an effort with a depleted roster for anybody to suggest that they were throwing games. And that's the loophole that saved Ross's ownership. What a joke.

For the record: "Tanking" is an organizational strategy. Grier and Ross's emaciated roster should have been all the evidence needed to buttress the tanking claims. You can replace the entire roster with Pop Warner bench players and the coach and players are all going to try their hardest to win games. Players and coaches are always competing for their next contracts, so you won't have any giving less than their best effort on game day.

The crazy part is, if Ross is eventually out and Beal is also out, does that mean Tom Brady can eventually enter a bid to own the team? That would be NFL justice right there.

My thoughts: unfortunately, this was inevitable and I wonder if it's why we gave up so much for Tyreek (to avoid being stripped of those picks a few months ago).

For Flores, I'm glad he got some vindication BUT I think part of the ruling today should have got him his guaranteed money. It's not right having to choose between reporting "unprecedented tampering" or getting paid on his guaranteed contract. Personally, I'd get paid and most of you would too if we're being honest.

For Ross, he's a cancer that has to cut ties with this team. He just can't help himself seeking other options and Beal's connection to Brady was what doomed us. I'm also curious about the suspension since it keeps him off NFL boards and out of meetings for two seasons...the suspension from our facility until October pales in comparison to the main punishment. That's two years other NFL owners will talk trash about him and that's probably enough to convince him to sell (if he's not kicked out).

Beal obviously has to go as well since he created this perfect storm. No way he can remain the successor.

Finally, to the draft picks, I'm not really sure what to say. It doesn't hurt Ross really, and the organization already has a pretty stacked roster. It's a shame we didn't trade away those 2023 picks to move back into the 1st round this year, it was about the only way we'd be able to keep them. Maybe the league put a stop to that though once we went all-in for Tyreek...who knows. I wonder if we would have gone all-in on Brady if it wasn't for the report by Flores.

All in all, I don't think this hurts our team as much as some may believe- we're losing a single 1st rounder (and a 3rd the following year). That sucks and it could have been another star player, but if we win as expected this season then it would have been a pick in the mid 20's? Again, it sucks...but that's probably not an all-world draft pick.

So, basically neither our QB nor our HC was our first choice and, likely not even our second choice. Hopefully this vindication gives Brian Flores a decent shot at a HC job next season.

Beal is suspended for all games this year and fined, but nothing was mentioned about the NFL-approved succession plan. I’m no lawyer, but at this point, if the NFL wanted to remove Beal, I’m betting there’s a lot succession law (there’s probably a more specific name for that type of law, but I don’t know it) they’d now have to fight.

I think we’re probably stuck with Beal as the next owner of the Dolphins… which is unfortunate.

Ross dealing serious damage to the franchise. Hopefully Tua is the answer at QB, Miami won't have the extra draft picks to move around if they need to in 2023/2024.

Well, if they have to give up pick #32 in 2023, none of us will care, right?

Outside everything that was said above about the owner and what he has done with the team I have to ask the following questions.

Why isn't Brady and Payton both fined as well? If there were discussions then the player and coach who were both under contract with other teams responsible for tampering just as much as ross? I would expect them to be fined / penalized as well since they seemed to be involved with discussions on what it would take etc??

    "MIAMI DOLPHINS
Dave Hyde: Steve Ross keeps failing Ownership 101 with Miami Dolphins, as NFL investigation confirms
    By Dave Hyde
    South Florida Sun-Sentinel
    Aug 02, 2022 at 3:26 pm

The trouble with phrases like “unprecedented scope and severity” and “integrity of the game violations,” in the NFL’s report against Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross is they don’t get to the bottom-line issue more than a decade in making:

How can someone so smart be so dumb?

Every owner knows how to tamper without being a league-wide conversation. Every team knows how to tank without having to float a bribe to the coach to lose games. This is Ownership 101, folks. This isn’t anything close to the heavy lifting of winning.

But the Dolphins, being the Dolphins, lost a future first- and third-round pick to highlight various suspensions and fines on Tuesday as this once-proud franchise remains a beacon of embarrassment.

The league crammed game-fixing and tampering charges against Ross into a one-stop press release that didn’t just condense the comedy to one day. It shows Ross got off lightly.

He offered money to coach Brian Flores to fix games in 2019, the league investigation found. But Ross was joking, the league concluded. Ha-ha! Maybe Ross’ delivery was all wrong to Flores?

What part of a line like, “I’ll give you $100,000 for every loss,” didn’t Flores find funny that the league lawyers did? And will the Justice Department find it as much a knee-slapper if they open an investigation for game fixing?

“I strongly disagree with the conclusions and the punishment,’’ Ross said in a statement “however, I will accept the outcome because the most important thing is that there be no distractions for our team as we begin an exciting and winning season.”

The good news about those distractions: Ross is suspended until Oct. 17 and owner-in-waiting Bruce Beal is suspended, too. So those distractions won’t be distracting the team.

The bad news: Other distractions don’t just remain in place, but are bigger and more central to the “exciting and winning season.” That’s because the NFL investigation made it official. Mike McDaniel and Tua Tagovailoa weren’t supposed to be the Dolphins coach and quarterback this year, according to Ross’s bold plan. Sean Payton and Tom Brady were contacted.

Ross began talking with Brady two years ago, during his New England time, the league report said. It kept up through December 2021 when he was with the Bucs, the report said. Payton was the New Orleans Saints’ coach when the Dolphins contacted him in January. To spin this as a positive: Ross thinks big!

Dumb. But big. Clumsy. But big. The simple truth is if the league didn’t find that the Dolphins tampered with Brady and Payton their credibility would be mush. This was an open discussion inside the league for months.

It was so open I wrote three columns on it that many Dolphins fans refused to believe in the same manner they refused to believe Ross negotiated a trade for Deshaun Watson right to the trade deadline last year. Or that poor team management led to the Bullygate scandal in 2013. Or that Ross flew across country with general manager Jeff Ireland and tried to hire Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh while Tony Sparano was coach, after the 2010 season.

Do you detect a pattern of dumb ownership? Ross is a multi-billionaire genius in real estate. So maybe he’s just dumb as a sports owner in thinking everyone else is dumb.

Back to this season. McDaniel and Tagovailoa will have this question of Payton and Brady hanging over them all year. It’s not exactly fair. It won’t help during those bad stretches every season has. But the owner put the question there.

It was a bold plan by Ross, too. If Brady and Payton are running the Dolphins right now, you’d need a division of security guards at the ticket gate and the TV networks are fighting over them for prime-time games. It was a strategic show-stopper except for one thing: It fell apart when Flores filed his racial discrimination lawsuit against the league and the Dolphins.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called it “unprecedented” that the Dolphins tampered with two people in two organizations. His penalty was hardly unprecedented for the Dolphins. They have been fined a first-round pick for tampering with a coach previously.

Don Shula was the coach. Shula was forever furious about the league’s ruling, because Dolphins owner Joe Robbie asked Baltimore Colts president Steve Rosenbloom for permission. The league ruled he needed to talk to his father, owner Carroll Rosenbloom, who was in Asia on business in that stretch.

Here’s the larger point: Robbie got his man. He hired Shula. It was the best first-round pick spent in team history.

Ross didn’t get Payton and Brady. Did he try saying that was a joke, too? That Payton and Brady didn’t get the punchline just as Flores didn’t?

Ross runs a first-class organization everywhere, except for the one place people notice. The team is a regular mess. He hasn’t won a playoff game in 13 years as owner. Maybe this is the year? Maybe McDaniel and Tagovailoa are a winning team?

If not, Brady and Payton will be out there next winter for Ross to chase again."

Miami is writing the text book on how to blunder a dynasty building trade. This is what football purgatory looks like. Really wish he’d sell and the new owner would hire a new GM.

A timeline of events in the Miami Dolphins’ tampering scandal
    BY DANIEL OYEFUSI
    AUGUST 02, 2022 4:41 PM

After six months of investigating claims of violating the integrity of the game, the NFL concluded that the Dolphins were engaged in an egregious violation of tampering rules. These “impermissible communications” involved star quarterback Tom Brady and Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton and spanned three years.

Here is a timeline of key events in the Dolphins’ tampering scandal:

AUGUST 2019 ▪ The Dolphins’ “impermissible communications” with Tom Brady begins when he is a member as the New England Patriots, the league’s investigation found. These discussions are conducted by Dolphins vice chairman Bruce Beal and continued throughout the regular season and postseason.

DECEMBER 2021 ▪ The Dolphins have impermissible communications with Brady and his agent during and after the 2021 season, now with Brady a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the investigation found. The discussions focus on Brady becoming a limited partner or executive in Miami and also include the possibility of playing for the Dolphins. Both Beal and Dolphins owner Stephen Ross are involved in these discussions, the investigation concluded.

JANUARY 2022 ▪ The Dolphins have impermissible communications with Don Yee, the agent for coach Sean Payton, about Payton becoming the team’s next head coach. The league’s investigation found these conversations are conducted before Payton’s retirement in February and the New Orleans Saints did not give their consent.

The Dolphins fire former coach Brian Flores on January 11, one day after the regular season ended.

FEBRUARY 2022 ▪ Flores files a sweeping lawsuit, accusing the NFL and multiple teams, including the Dolphins, of racial discrimination. He also alleges Ross attempted to initiate a meeting against league rules with a “prominent quarterback” — later determined to be Brady — in the winter of 2020.

    ▪ In a memo sent to NFL teams, Goodell on Feb. 5 says the league will look into Flores’ claims.
Goodell wrote that the league “take seriously any issue relating to the integrity of NFL game. Those matters will be reviewed thoroughly and independently. We expect that those independent experts will receive full cooperation from everyone associated with the league or any member club as this work proceeds.”

    ▪ The Dolphins on Feb. 6 announce the hiring of Mike McDaniel as the team’s next head coach. Media reports later claim the team intended to pursue Payton as head coach but decided against it after Flores’ lawsuit.

AUGUST 2022 ▪ The NFL on Tuesday releases the findings of its six-month independent investigation. Goodell calls the Dolphins’ violation of the league’s anti-tampering policy “of unprecedented scope and severity.”
The league docks the team its 2023 first-round pick and a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Ross is suspended through Oct. 17 and fined $1.5 million.
Beal is suspended from all league meetings for the rest of the 2022 season and fined $500,000.

I really don’t get this line of thinking. I didn’t hate Flo as a coach, actually was surprised when he got fired, but after the fact it was clear that he was ****ing with Tua’s development. I can respect not tanking, but when your team uses a top 5 pick on a QB and tell you to develop him, you get the **** in line and do your best to put him in a position to succeed. Flores didn’t do that, he looks like he was actively sabotaging a top 5 pick. Don’t think he should be rewarded for that.
