Our problem isn't our defense. It's our offense. Both sides had good defensive game plans and yet both the Chiefs and Chargers scored 24+ points. League average last year was 23 ppg. So far in 2022 it's 21.3 ppg. In other words, "garbage" for Mahomes and Herbert is "average" (or slightly above) for everyone else. Can we score 24+ against their defense is the question. Last year our average was 20 ppg.

Also, I wouldn't just assume our defense is "leaps and bounds" better than the ones you saw. KC last year was #8 in points allowed per game while we were #16. We have yet to prove we have an elite defense.

I agree, the problem IS our offense. It's going to continue to be the problem until Tua or another player steps up and becomes the quarterback that we need. The Chiefs and Chargers don't necessarily scare me either, but they have scary quarterbacks that can beat you at any moment. We have Tua and he has yet to prove that he can be that type of quarterback. Again, I'm not asking him to be elite, but he has to be good enough to win a game for you if necessary. Is Matt Ryan elite? Was Phillip Rivers elite? Ben Roethlisberger? In my opinion no...They aren't and never were, but they were damn good quarterbacks in their prime. Good enough to get their teams to the Super Bowl. Rivers played in a bunch of playoff games that went beyond the first round. As a matter of fact, if it weren't for him playing with a shredded knee in 2007, he may have give the Patriots a fair run for their money in the championship game. I think we need Tua to be at least as good as those guys for this offense to have any real shot at hanging with teams like KC, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, and San Diego. Throw Cincy in there too because they have box office talent at the wide receiver position and a great quarterback in Joe Burrow throwing to them.

All of you negative Nancy’s after one game!

Also Brad remember, 7 of the Chiefs points was a 99 yard pick 6 thrown by Herbert. I watched that entire game and both Mahomes and Herbert played POORLY under pressure and since you like quoting last years stats, the Dolphins blitzed more than virtually every other team.

There were reports suggesting that maybe Tua might have improved as a QB, i.e., independent of his surroundings. We didn't see that in game 1. That's why this thread continues.

I'm not negative on the season, or on the franchise like in past years. I was really impressed that a 1st time HC could field a team vs. NE on opening day that was well organized and ready to play. I really like that we improved our WR corps in this pass happy league. I think there's a better chance we make the playoffs this year than that we don't.

Overall I'm not negative, at least not yet lol. But Tua did disappoint in that he was no different than last year. It's just one game. He has the full season to show otherwise. But right now the negative attitude towards him is warranted.

Next game in just over 16 hours.. so maybe we'll see something different? Only Tua can end the criticism.

Maybe this will help show you the difference.

In 2021 TD passes per games started:
    Mahomes: 2.18
    Herbert: 2.24
    Tua: 1.33
    League average: 1.5

In 2021 TDs per pass attempt:
    Mahomes: 5.6%
    Herbert: 5.7%
    Tua: 4.1%
    League average: 4.5%

In general, when Mahomes and Herbert didn't do well in 2021 it was closer to average QB play, while Tua's normal level was close to average QB play. We'll see about 2022. And Mahomes' 2021 was actually a down year for him. He was way better in the 3 years before that. Just goes to show you how far up "elite" is.

After one game? Is that how long you've watched Tua play below average football? You should catch up bruh.

I think Tua's hype man/offseason coach really needs to stop talking. All he did was talk up Tua's increased arm strength, and everything looks exactly the same.

The one thing that is absolutely clear is Tua doesn't let his mistakes get him down. You could have almost understood him melting down and justifying the calls for him to be benched.

    What an incredible performance

Just an update on Tua stats. He's now at 116.5 rating after 83 passing attempts. Passer rating starts to reach a minimum level of reliability after about ~150 passing attempts, but unless he bombs he'll be over 100 by 150+. We might be seeing a major improvement here. Still only 2 games.. have to wait and see.

Quite frankly, I feel like this thread could close. The point of this thread was to highlight that with all the problems the Dolphins had Tua was one of the least of them. Ross. Grier. Scandal. Drama. Coaching. OL. WR. Miami had 99 problems but Tua wasn't one.

Will we win a SB with Tua? I don't know. There may be better QB's that come to us soon. But right now, we can enjoy Dolphins football. Tua wasn't the problem last year.

Will he be the problem this year? We need to wait and see. But Tua isn't a scrub. Let's see what happens.

This does not change anything. It's still the same old Tua with a limited arm who's only really good at short and intermediate routes over the middle. Baltimore just decided to stop playing the deep ball and let Hill run free.

I will give Tua credit though for keeping his composure and making them pay after a bad first half.

That's big though. There have been QB's with limited physical abilities, kind of like Tua. Steve Young is a great example. Statistically the most efficient QB in history (even more than Mahomes btw when adjusting for era). But Young had very high football IQ. Tua historically fairly mediocre football IQ. He showed some stupid decision making today with the two INTs. But otherwise that was a pretty efficient offense. And as you said he kept composure and led the team to a win.

Major test is whether we see these games more often, especially after teams specifically game plan against the short intermediate routes. But today we saw something we never saw from Tua before: ability to carry the team AND do so with high volume performance. Arizona game he led the team back repeatedly, but not with high volume performance. Today was more like what you see in the big name QBs.

Anyway, he's got to prove it all season no question.

Next week against the Bills will be massive considering that they look like a force of nature so far this season and Tua has historically struggled against them.

How wild was Miami’s comeback? It’s the first time in 12 years a team has come back from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

From 2011 to 2022, teams trailing by 21+ in the fourth quarter have a record of 0-711.

Have to fix the defense. McDaniel has a pulse on the offense. This will be a great barometer of where the Fins are. If we happen to beat the Bills we're almost certainly in the playoffs (rare that a 3-0 team doesn't make it), and we might win a playoff game or two. That alone would put McDaniel in a class above all our recent coaches. Hard to overstate today's win and what Tua did in it. Changes the season outlook if this isn't just an anomaly.

Let's see... Someone brings something up, and instigates this, but he's the bad guy for responding?

Do you really believe Tyreek Hill will ever again run undefended all the way down the field? Lol. Like, yes, this was an amazing win. Tua showed a lot, I think, by making plays in the 4th. The stats are amazing, albeit I think a wee bit inflated. There's nothing wrong with admitting that.
