Metallica.com Metallica is streaming their whole new album live from their website a day before it comes. out. Have a listen
I bought the album on Friday. And I must say, it is awesome! Here's to Rick Rubin permanently replacing Bob Rock. The first track ("That Was Just Like Your Life") is my favorite track.
The Judas Kiss is my favorite track. I havent listened to That Was Just Like Your Life too much, but I'll give it another try now.
Hmm...now that you mention i could see it being top 5. Master of Puppets Ride the Lightning Black Album ...And Justice for All Have a few options for 5 imo, but I could see Death Magnetic.
Broken, Beat and Scarred is a great track. Nice to see them grow a pair. They owe Rubin a Gold Plated Ferrari.
It's funny that their best albums never went to number 1. Guess the fan base really swelled after The Black Album. Week Ending Sept. 14, 2008: Metallica And The Hard Rock Pantheon - Chart Watch
I did not want to, I tried not to...and I didn't buy it. That said, my g/f picked it up...LOL! Track one is very good, riffy and straight ahead, it's my fave track on the record. I have listened to it all the way through twice and I actually enjoy it. I have a few issues though. Some of the song intros seem to be forced, like they HAD to make them all 2 minutes. I like the fact that there are a lot of changes in the songs, bring back memories of Puppets. I like the fact that at times the band sounds VERY tight, bringing back memories of ...Justice. I don't like the fact that the bass seems to be mixed out. Robert is a brilliant bass player but he is invisible for much of this record. Am I the only one that thinks that stretches of this record sound like Kill 'Em All? Thrashy but tight? I don't know about the entirety of the album but there are sections of every song that are great. James has some growl again, that is a good thing. Kirk is allowed to solo and as much as solos can grate on my nerves, it sounds good. Lars though is simply awful throughout the album in my opinion. He offers nothing. It's not in the league of the first 4 records they put out. If this band had dropped off the face of the planet after Kill 'Em All, Lightning, Puppets and ...Justice they would be immortalized on the side of a mountain. They can never achieve that status again. That said, after making garbage for the better part of 15 years it is a nice return to relevance.
Yeah UT, there are tastes of Kill Em All in this album, which is one of the things I like the most. I like the length of each song, longer is better...er.... The thing I dislike however is the overall sound quality throughout most of the album. There's a word for it, a technical term which I'm hoping someone can say. It's not mixed right. Iron Maiden had this little issue with Dance Of Death, not as bad. Rush, Vapor Trails, great album, but a similar problem. There's an over distortion that takes away from the quality of the sound. Is it just me?
It does do some clipping or come close to clipping. It's because the album is mixed really loud, a nasty habit that most sound engineers have now a days. "Louder is better". I have a better idea, mix it so it sounds GOOD and if people want volume they can buy better sound equipment and/or turn up the volume. I don't need some meat head techy turning the volume up on everything and making my stereo system, which is pretty good, sounding like crap.
