He is going to have to play amazing in Buffalo and New England to have a chance at MVP IMO.

Well, like I e said many times before, stats are just ONE measuring stick but if Tua can keep playing at the statistical level he’s currently playing and the Dolphins win those games, it would be a difficult argument against it.

The good news: He's playing at a crazy level right now. And this is while it's clear he can actually clean up a few things.

The bad news: If he plays an average (or good, but not great) game, the defense isn't good enough to win. And who's to say his current level of play is sustainable? Thank goodness we have signs of life from the running game.

Tua has set the bar so high, the next game he has when the Dolphins win and he only throws for 180 yards and 1 touchdown, people will be questioning him.

He's getting questioned again after another 300+ yard game and three touchdowns.

This place is going to melt down when they lose a game.

    Thanks for the update.
    Week 1 - Tua can’t throw deep
Week 2 - It was just one good quarter
Week 3 - The Bills were missing half their starting D
Week 4 - I told you he can’t stay healthy
    Week 7 - 4 Almost interceptions!
Week 8 - It was only the Lions
Week 9 - The bears just traded away their 2 best defenders.

Not sure who they are, but most of the anti-Tua posters aren't posting lol. They just magically disappear when he plays well.

Personally, if they begrudgingly begin to accept him for being good, I'm not going to rub it in. It'd be nice to come together for once. Not just that, but there are plenty of other reasons to beef with each other.

Key word is "if". The ones that care more about the Dolphins winning than about being right will come around. However, I doubt that's true of all anti-Tua posters, especially some we haven't heard from in a long time. I mean there was at least one who hated Tua not just for football reasons but because of his religion/race.

Definitely his best game of the year, imo. He showed off a lot of his good traits such as looking off defenders and being accurate, etc.
    Good stuff.

For those who may think putting up 130+ passer rating against the Lions and Bears is somehow less than impressive.

Miami’s D, which we all acknowledge as being pretty trashy this year have allowed passer ratings of
    87.2
    142.6
    94.7
    118.0
    99.3
    104.2

I think his game against the Lions was better, but the Bears D is a much stiffer challenge. As a by note Aaron Rodger’s put up a passer rating of 53.5 against the same Lions D that Tua hung a rating of 138.7 against.

Just for fun. If Pittsburgh had intercepted all 4 of the ‘almost interceptions’ in their game, Tua’s passer rating would be 108.6., which would still lead the league.

Meanwhile, Zack Wilson is being touted as the next big thing for beating the Bills at home and playing mistake free football while throwing for 150 yards and 1 touchdown.

Tua was slammed by the media for doing the same exact thing last year.

I wonder what the difference is between the two?

Also, Justin Herbert might be the most overrated quarterback in the NFL is the last 10 years.

Herbert just put up 245 yards with a 5.7 ypa against the worse pass defence in the league, a team that is giving up over 300 yards per game. He's kinda in the situation Tua was in his first 2 years with a lack of talent around him and he's putting up the same average numbers.

Tua puts up ratings of over 130 against both the Lions and the Bears in consecutive weeks and we get "it's just the Lions", "The Bears just traded their two best defenders" or "did you see those 2 terrible throws at the end".

It just feels like Tua is the most analysed QB of the last 10 years at least. He needs to put up a perfect game every time, every slack pass is pointed out to the nth degree and for the life of me I have no idea why. We finally have a franchise QB yet some fans still want to argue over every single little fault. I sometimes wonder if we managed to reincarnate Marino if he would be good enough for some fans.

Personally, my criticism of Tua stems mostly from his lack of physical tools and durability. He doesn't have a strong arm, is not the most mobile or athletic QB, he is small and he is not durable. Those are all things Herbert has that Tua does not. There is really nothing personal about why people hate on Tua more than guys like Herbert, it's just a physical talent comparison, and before this season much better performance by Herbert.

What does Tua have going for him that is better than Herbert? Maybe a bit better accuracy and anticipation on short and intermediate passes, and a quicker release with quicker decision making at this point.

Tua is riding a great wave with Hill and Waddle right now, but I think long term Herbert will still turn out to be the better QB.

It's really not a great mystery why people hate on Tua. He is small, has a relatively weak arm, is not very athletic, and is not durable. Those are things guys like Herbert and Wilson have that Tua does not.

It's really nothing personal against Tua.

So Tua reads defences better, makes quicker decisions and makes more accurate throws? Seems like he might be the better QB to me.

I get where you are coming from as you've made it clear you like big, tall, strong armed QB's. Personally I like QB's who get the ball to open guys regardless of their size.

I am no hater.I said a million times winning is more important than my ego!
I didn't want to draft Tua even a little bit.But he is playing great as his 115.9 QB rating will attest to.
Still concerned about his injury history but if he stays healthy and this Def starts playing better I wouldn't want to play us in the playoffs!

That's fine, but why criticize Tua this year when his performance is the best in the NFL and there's no sign he's too fragile to play the rest of the season? There's no need to put in qualifiers when he's doing exceptionally well right now.

Does this mean you're going to keep criticizing Tua for his physical traits even if he ends this year playing at elite level? How many years will it take before you admit Tua is better if his performance is superior to Herbert?

Performance is what matters, not "strong arm" or "lack of durability" per se (as long as it's not too severe). Steve Young is statistically the most efficient passer in history and he had both of these issues.

There is no real reason for Dolphin fans to hate on Tua at this point. Its fine to wish they took Herbert but its year 3 its time to get over it already and appreciate that the team is getting actual great QB play for the first time in 20+ years.

    And Wilson is awful.

If Tua continues to play at an elite level then obviously I will recognize I was wrong about him not being an elite QB. I did always say he was a good QB, I just didn't think he had the physical tools to be truly elite, and I still have my doubts about him long term.

If he goes on to have a career like Young's then obviously he will prove me and a lot of people wrong, that is actually the best comp for Tua, and also revealing about how I evaluate QBs in general. Even though Young had a great career and was the most efficient passer, I would never rank him as a better QB than Marino, or Elway or Favre for example who were of the same era. Simply because Young didn't have the physical tools those other QBs had and he was mainly just more lucky than them to play on an all-time great team for most of his prime years.

Can we agree to let the trial period be the entire 2022 season, at least for criticism of his physical traits potentially impacting long-term performance? That is, not wait till 2023 or 2024? Technically I'm in that camp too though I'm already 99% there with Tua.

I did not know that while watching the game. The Dolphins sliced them up.

It was a classic match up game of strength on strength. Our run D against their running game and our passing game against their Secondary.

Yeah I did actually. I said before the game if Tua goes in and shreds them in their stadium, outdoors, on that field then my expectations would be sky high. Expectations are currently around the moon and going higher since not only did he do that, he was once again the most efficient QB in the league yesterday.

Of course it will get downplayed since they traded Quinn (who was having a poor year) and Smith who is outstanding. Smith wasn't going to help stop Hill or Waddle though since Tua makes so many throws behind the LB's but before the safeties. If Smith was helping out back there then Mostert and Wilson would have run for 100 yards each instead.

Look, I’m still a BIG Tannehill fan but we had 273 pages of Tannehill debate, even after he left. I often disagreed with him on Ryan and still do. Banging your head against a concrete wall hoping THIS TIME you’ll finally make a hole is insane.

Put your focus on our current quarterback and team. I think you’ll be a happier camper with all of the Wins we’re accumulating.

I was referring to people who oppose him due to his race. I honestly have little problem with anybody who wants a better team, so long as their reasons are based on logic. IMO, people who are never satisfied are among the best fans because until the team wins a chip, they're absolutely right to feel the way that they do. If your opposition is because he's a person of color, then your reasons to dislike him have nothing to do with performance.

For the record: You all know that I'm a Tua fan. But IMO, the first order of business for Chris Grier every day has to be making the team better. Bringing in a better quarterback at an appropriate cost isn't just something he should constantly consider, it's the most important aspect of his job. "Appropriate cost" is the relative phrase.

So I don't object to a lot of posters who want a better QB. I reserve the right to question if they're being upfront about their criticisms, though.

Wilson has those strength and durability traits that Tua apparently does not. In that case would you be happy trading Tua straight up for Wilson right now ? If your answer is no, why not ? Wilson has the more important traits you covet in a QB.
