I like that move. Denver defense gets a coach they probably don't want (I read somewhere there are at least a few players on the team from when he was HC who want nothing to do with him) and Miami gets the one they probably like.

If Grier’s job was in jeopardy, Ross would have fired him after the playoff game loss. Lets all face the reality that Grier is here to stay for another season.. wouldnt shock me if he gets an extension.

If we didnt have such a bad reputation for toxicity and mistreating coaches, I believe he would have signed without a second thought. It still falls on Grier and the FO for giving us such a bad reputation that no self respecting coach wants to come here, even when offerred boat loads of money.

Kris Richard was just let go by the Saints, for whatever that’s worth. Maybe to go to Denver?

PS. Tua is out of concussion protocol finally

I hope we didn't whiff on Fangio. I was so excited about this! Hopefully it's just some delay or something.

I want him gone too… i said years ago, ross shoold fire him and back up a brinks truck to Ozzie to get him out of retirement.. but here we are, stuck with Grier.. that position has been pretty terrible for decades on the dolphins…

just for reference, every GM we have had since 2004 has accumulated a below .500 record during their tenure here. Im talking Spiellman, Mueller, Hickey, Ireland and Grier.

Chris Grier currently has a record of 56-58 as the GM of the dolphins.. and watching how we won some of those games, is a miracle in itself. Especially all the questionable dumb stuff we did to our roster right on final cuts with Flores..

As somebody else mentioned, it could very well be that Fangio is under contract to the Eagles as a consultant and as such, there may be language in his contract that limits his ability to publically announce anything outside of Eagles business while their season is still in progress. Maybe not but, it's a possibility.

Vic Fangio has agreed to become the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. That deal was reported to be done on Sunday, but Fangio himself made clear after the reports surfaced that he had made no such agreement. Fangio was also linked to the defensive coordinator vacancies on both the 49ers and the Broncos.

Fangio has been consulting with the Eagles this season, and he may continue to do so through the Super Bowl before beginning work in Miami.Fangio went just 19-30 in three years as the Broncos’ head coach, but he has had success as a defensive coordinator for the Bears, 49ers, Texans and Colts, and he’s a major get for Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins as they attempt to build on a playoff season in 2022 and become Super Bowl contenders in 2023.

Normally this wouldn’t have worries me much at al but then again we are talking about a team with a front office’s incredible ability to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Glad we have something that’s seemingly written in the stone.

So, for those bashing Grier in this thread.

Are you going to give him credit? Or are you going to say he had nothing to do with this hire?

Have to give Grier credit for McD and Fangio as well as some key FA like Hill. However, the big question will be whether Tua ultimately pans out or not. If Tua does pan out, then Grier is a good GM, if not then no. That's how much QB matters nowadays. But at least I think we got the coaching staff right, which says a lot.

I think it's a good hire. I like where we are coaching wise, but the problem with this team has not really been so much coaching as it has been bad personel decisions and bad drafting. This hire does not make Grier a good GM.

Jury is still out on McD. Either way is a GMs only job to swing and miss until he finds the right coach? What about all the terrible drafting and personel decisions? Does that not fall on Grier? I like that we got Fangio, but one good hire does mot make a good GM. Bad drafting and personel, along with a toxic environment is what ultimately has held this franchise back, that still falls on the GM.

Drafting hasn’t been terrible, the question is if it’s good enough. Next season is going to be interesting, if we are not hit by injuries like last season I‘m curious how far this thing can go. Grier hasn’t been perfect but he hasn’t been terrible, next season will bring some answers either way.

I don't think Grier has done a good enough job drafting, and I don't like that he's a holdover from the stench of the Ireland days but I'm not sure as a fan I'm ready to see him ousted after a mostly positive season, which you have to give him some credit for. If things don't stay trending in the right direction, and it looks personnel related, I think he's gotta go in 2024.

Well...It's official, yet it wont be legal until after the SB. Ok...Phew...Deep breath. I understand the panic that some of you experienced. This would have been so Miami Dolphin of us had this not gone through. Thank God that it did, our defense will be in good hands with him coaching it. I can't remember the last time we both a good offense and good defense. Probably have to go back to the mid 90s when Shula was still here. I don't know for sure, not going to look up the stats on it, I'm just going off of memory.

The thing with the Fangio hiring is that I think it's way more valuable than going out and signing some big named free agent player. Fangio is the type of coach that can create a mindset for the defense. Therefore while talent is definitely required, it's more of a system or idea that these players are thriving off of. I think he makes our players better just by coaching and teaching them if that makes sense. Obviously we can add a few free agents on defense, but I think this is more about getting the guys we already have, to play smarter and to improve on seeing things unfold and anticipating them as opposed to their skill set/status. We have a lot of talent on defense minus the linebacker position and I actually like Jerome Baker and Elandon Roberts. I think we can upgrade, but those guys are capable players. I don't think there has been a lack of talent issue with this defense, I honestly think it was the play calling and that falls on Josh Boyer. He's gone so I'm thinking that we see a lot of these guys back next year playing under Fangio with better results.

    Looking at Grier’s coaching hires.
2016 Adam Gase. In retrospect this was a bad hire, but he went 23-25 as a HC so in the grand scheme of things that’s not too bad. Adam Gase was the hot prospect that year, and at the time everyone was crediting Miami for getting the next great young coach and building a strong cast of coaches to support him.
The whole burn everything down and rebuild decision was taken as a chance to build something great, objectively the talent on hand wasn’t terrible but didn’t really lend itself to a deep playoff run.

2019 Brian Flores. Again not the worst hire. 24-25 as HC. Flores wasn’t the ‘hot name’ at the time but was widely respected in the league.
The decision to sack him was a bit controversial but it was the right decision. Flores was wasting Tua’s potential, turned our OL into a laughing stock and had burned through a lot of players and coaches who, as it turned out, weren’t the problem.

2022 Mike McDaniel. Offensively has been all what has been advertised and more when Tua is healthy. Defensively it was thought that Boyer could get the job done based on his performance in 2021.

I think on balance that his performance in selecting coaches has been good. He’s given people with good credentials a shot, then pulled the plug once it became clear they weren’t the next Don Shula. Also his coaching hires haven’t been dumpster fires like Cam Cameron.

We have been bad to mediocre throughout Grier's tenure. He keeps changing coaches and players, but we never get over the hump. Main problem has been bad drafting, he has had some major misses, mostly underachievers and major busts in his drafts, not many real impact players or difference makers, and of course the number one problem is he hasnt been able to get us a true franchise QB. I'm sorry to say Tua is not it since he has limited talent and cannot be depended on to play a full season.

Grier's best move was pulling off the trade for Hill, that's the main reason why we at least had a winning season this year. Overall I would say grier is a bad to mediocre GM, and his teams have played that way.

I think that's underselling Grier. Overall he's average. Drafting he's well below average, yes, but in FA I'd say he's above average and with Fangio and McD I think he's now a bit above average for coaching hires after missing with Gase (especially) and Flores.

Main problem has been lack of superstars, especially at QB.

Tannehill was adequate for the Titans after being not great for us. But frankly, that team's engine was Derrick Henry and THill was tasked with being effective and efficient behind that. We lacked that player who could dominate a game.

That dovetailed into the Flores era where defensively we had some standouts, but offensively we were just SO BAD and such a dumpsterfire that we had to move on.

Now we have McDaniel, and Tua showed out more and we have Hill/Waddle. That is a grouping we simply haven't had. Next year is going to come down to a few things:
    1) Tua's health.
    2) McDaniel's ability to adapt and continue his offense. We have to incorporate the running game better and it felt like teams figured out our WR's later in the year. It's on McDaniel to break that open again.
    3) OL play.
    4) Fangio turning our defense into a top 10-12 unit. Preferably top 6-8.

Hitting all 4 and we are legit SB contenders. Hitting 2-3 and we are a playoff team but likely an early exit. Only hitting on 1 and we are probably around .500 but miss the playoffs or back in and then do squat.

Looking at the deep playoff teams this year, you see very good defense predicated on DL play with devastating pass rush. You see mostly high level QB play (SF excepted), and you see high level coaching on both sides of the ball. You also see teams with gamebreakers on both sides of the ball. Other things are negotiable depending on the team. Bengals overcame bad OL to a point, Mahomes overcame bad WRs. San Fran somewhat overcame bad QB play until they were on like their 5th string. Philly is just a complete team. But ... they also got super lucky in facing a very weak playoff schedule with the Giants and then QBless San Fran.

But overall man, playmakers on both sides of the ball and coaching to get them in the right spots.

He's only above average at pulling off blockbuster trades (tunsil, Tyreek Hill) his actual free agent signings have been mostly bad, only real impact player we have gotten through free agency is armstead, and he's injuried half the season which we should have known was going to happen because he has a histroy of chronic injuries.

And even with the trades he's gone overboard now leveraging our future for not much overall improvement of the team. I think you are overselling him.

Yes I like this Fangio signing and Mcd looks like a good offensive mind, but overall grier has been a bad to mediocre GM IMHO.

Next season will tell. If we make the playoffs again, there's no justification for saying Grier is below average. That would be 4 consecutive winning seasons (almost certainly, to be technical) and 2 consecutive playoff appearances with what looks like good coaching.

We'll see, but I think this franchise is finally on a winning trajectory. I predict playoffs again, even if we don't go deep.

Simply making the playoffs is not enough anymore, specially with the new schedule it's not as hard to make the playoffs as it used to be. If we dont win at least 1 playoff game next year then we are no better off than we were before Grier took over as GM, and it will be 8 years wasted under grier for no significant improvement in our results.

No.. if we make the playoffs and have 4 consecutive winning seasons that's clearly an improvement over pre-Grier years. We had 7 consecutive non-winning seasons pre-Grier. It's objectively better at that point. Don't let your hatred for Grier cloud actual improvement. Of course that's IF we make the playoffs and post a winning record next year. If we don't, then I'll agree with you.

Sorry, but I wont see another season without a playoff win as a success in any signifcant way. At this stage in the rebuild and with all of the resources we have invested in Grier's 8 year tenure we should be competing for a super bowl, not going one and done in the playoffs in a 17 game season.

    On Grier’s drafting. In 2016
    Larmey Tunsil
    Xavien Howard
    Kenyan Drake
    Jakeem Grant
Pretty solid 2 absolute syars with the first 2 picks, and a decent RB and a kick returner

    2017
    Whiffed on Charles Harris
    Partial success on Raekwon McMillan
Got a late round gems in Davon Godchaux

    2018
    Minkah Fitzpatrick
    Mike Gesecki
    Jerome Baker
    Durham Smythe
    Jason Sanders

    2019
    Christian Wilkins
    Andrew Van Ginkel
    Mykes Gaskin (7th round)
Plus some OL backups we have hanging around

    2020
    Tua
    Raekwon Davis
    Brandin Jones
Plus Iggy and some other OL filler.

    2021
    Jaylen Waddle
    Jaelen Philips
    Jevon Holland

That’s not a bad hit percentage. The biggest problem is getting success on the OL and edge rusher. The OL I’m giving him a mulligan on because our OL coaching would have taken the 1991 Hogs and turn them into turnstiles.
