The Dolphins now have confirmed the signings of Pro Bowl punter Jake Bailey

Bailey worked out for the Dolphins earlier in the day, and he will replace Thomas Morstead, who is leaving for the Jets after one season. Bailey played four seasons with New England after they made him a fifth-round pick in 2019.

The Patriots released him after suspending him at the end of the 2022 season. Bailey was set to have a $2.115 million guaranteed salary and filed a grievance against the Patriots because suspensions can wipe out guaranteed money. Bailey, who earned Pro Bowl honors in 2020, was on injured reserve at the time of his suspension. He averaged 45.9 yards per punt with a 40.9 net in 58 games with the Patriots.

Earlier in the day, they signed safety DeShon Elliott from Detroit, offensive lineman Dan Feeney from the Jets, linebacker David Long Jr. from Tennessee and tight end Eric Saubert from Denver.

    In other punter news.....

The Jets have signed punter Thomas Morstead, who announced his signing on social media. Morstead, 37, spent last season with the Dolphins, signing with them on a one-year deal a year ago. He averaged 46.4 yards on 61 punts with a 40.5-yard net and saw 45.9 percent of his kicks downed inside the 20.

He was pretty good last year- don't know if the year before was an outlier or something to be concerned about. If we found an upgrade I wouldn't cry though.

Honestly, we should draft a kicker in the 7th round. You're getting the best college leg in the country on a show-me deal...why not draft a kicker in the last round?

Late last season, the Patriots suspended punter Jake Bailey after a dispute about whether Bailey was ready to return to the field after an injury. That dispute became particularly contentious because Bailey had $2.115 million in guaranteed salary for 2023, and a suspension can void a player’s guarantees. Bailey filed a grievance to contest the suspension.

The result of that grievance has not been made public, but Bailey indicated today that it has been resolved to his satisfaction.

Bailey was released by the Patriots this month and signed with the Dolphins, and Bailey told reporters in Miami today that the grievance is over. Bailey declined to divulge any details of the grievance process, but he said there are no hard feelings and that he will not view playing against the Patriots as any different than playing against any other team.

Bailey was a Pro Bowler in 2020 but has struggled since then and was in the midst of his worst season when he was suspended at the end of 2022. He’ll now try to get back on track in a new setting.
