Ronnie in the shotgun. Chad lines up wide. Ricky in motion. What are we gonna call this play??? Correct me if I'm wrong, but we ran that play 3 times in the 1st half. Ronnie ran it in twice for a TD each time and the other time, he handed it to Ricky for a 26 yard gain. It was run twice in the second half and Ronnie threw it for a TD and ran it for a TD. Name that play!!!
When McFadden ran it in Arkansas it was called the Wild Hog formation. I don't think that fits our team so much, anymore. Based on Brown's performance today, it has to be renamed the Wild Phin formation. My sig says it all.
Wild Phin Formation sounds great. Not to nitpick, but the play Arkansas ran had a guy in the backfield along with McFadden. Ronnie was the lone set-back.
whats crazy is that ok 1 time I see it working, its nothing special. Ronnie snaps the ball. You know he is getting it. So maybe a run or a handoff or a pass. I mean Chad Pennington isn't a wideout and they are not going to take a change of him getting slammed down catching it.. Its amazing that he could run from that formation for such big gains...
Might as well call it "one and done" because as great as the play was teams know it now and we won't see much of it in the future. I can just hope for some equally creative plays out of the mind of Henning & Co.
How about R & R right, since they almost always had Ricky come around from left to right (and Brown had his three TD runs to the right). I realize that Ronnie rolled to his left on the TD throw, but R & R right still seems to fit.
I can see this team running that play at least once a game for the rest of the season. It is a tough play to stop.
the great thing about the play is that even if you know Ronnie is going to get the ball, that's no guarantee you can stop him; he's not easy to tackle. and if he doesn't get it, then Ricky is going to get it, and that's just a whole other problem. it's awesome. eventually we'll see Ronnie throw a pass to Pennington, and that'll just be amazing
It's like the old double wing (with Ricky coming in motion to give Ronnie the option) that Green Bay ran in Don Hutson's time, or the original Shotgun by the 1961 49ers, which they used to run a lot (a combination of tailback plunges and wingback reverses, just like we ran today).
what was kind of shocking was that N.E. had no gameplan for it after the 2nd half! i mean, does it mismatch that many defenders? Lets keep it in the arsenal if so. that said, the name should be Sunday Fever. get it Sunday Fever? cuz its from the Wild Hog formation. John Travolta was in Wild Hogs. He was also in Saturday Night Fever. Saturday is followed by Sunday..... you feelin me??????
I'm just wondering if next year they'll make some rule that only the qbs can take a snap. I mean, those plays were involved in the Pats biggest loss in years and we all know how the league is out to protect them...
The Penny Wide Brown for 7 GutBuster. That also makes a good name for a sandwhich. I also liked the suggestion of Kitchen Sink.
Also, old Fins fans will remember the 1980 game in which they split Woodley wide and had the running back get behind the center and take the snap. The RB (Nathan?) threw it to Woodley for the TD, but they called it back. Anyway, Woodley threw three TDs and ran for two in the game, and we beat a heavily favored Rams team, 35-14 I think. A lot like today.
This was some good play calling on Sunday. With 8:00 minutes left in the 3rd Qtr we had 17 run and 17 pass attempts. This is not the spread option, it is the Wildcat which was ran with McFadden as "QB". I saw a couple of teams try to run it last Saturday but for it to work you have to have TWO really good running backs (like McFadden and Felix Jones or Ronnie and Ricky) plus the real threat of the running back passing the ball. The semi odd thing to me was that Pennington was still in the game, normally they just take the QB out. I also noticed that Pennington was always on the left side of the formation or away from where they were running (if Ricky got the ball). So I started thinking that the coaches were going to wait until no one was covering Pennington at all and he was going to be throw to. I saw before the Ronnie pass that Pennington was lining up on the right side of the formation and I thought here it comes, the hand off to Ricky and the pass to Pennington from Ricky (it shows how confused the Patriots were that they did not seem to notice where Pennington lined up). I remembered after the play the two pass attempts from Ronnie last year and that he was left handed but I did not think of it until after the play. His TD pass showed one more reason this play can work, because he can run left while Ricky runs right and Ronnie can run or pass the ball. And I think Ricky can also run or pass the ball. And I expect to see sometime this year a wide open Chad Pennington catching a TD pass in the endzone.
that's exactly what i'm expecting to see in the future. i loved this entire package, i hope they don't "one and done" it. This just proves you can pull off a lot of those gadget college plays in the pros.... and let's face it, they're more fun to watch. i like the options that ronnie has in this formation. option handoff to ricky, option to run, option to pass either side. good stuff
After listening to Sparano's presser, it seemed pretty obvious to me, that they will continue to use this package quite a bit, going so far as to say that there was a ton they have developed with this...incorporating different players into it... The amazing thing is we have the genius behind the system as our QB coach...we have a Head Coach who is creative enough..and has the desire to try something to open up the game...and Henning doing a great job calling the plays.... I think we will see alot of this from now on....possibly a pro version with many different subsets...why...when you have the players...it looks damn hard to stop. Especially inside the 5 yard line... Man...could we have just opened up a new form of offensive system...that might just win us a few more games this season? I have a feeling they are gonna run with this new offensive creativity... Man I love Coach Sparano....he deserves huge credit for being willing to try something so creative....!!!!
1. I started this thread, and I thank everyone for the input. Too many good choices. Maybe we should start a poll. 2. The reason why we kept Chad Pennington in the game is that when we huddle-up, it looks like any other play...until Chad lines up at WR and Ronnie lines up at QB. This way, the defense cannot make any substitutions. Also, with Chad spread out wide, they HAVE to keep at least one guy out there to cover him, which makes that one CB unable to help defend the play. 3. I think we should wait until week 17 to throw the ball to Penny. Thats when we play the jets. I want him to throw, run, and catch a TD against those bastids!
honestly i don't think there's any more room for discussion on the name. Lee called it the "wildcat" as it was slightly different than the wildhog regarding the QB presence. i understand what you're saying and why we left pennington in there - and i'm not challenging it - just pointing out an obvious difference. anyway, Lee is the one who named it wildcat (according to the media), so i would assume that is the name they are running with. oh, and i LOVE your #3.
