Grier took his kid's buddy and it backfired in disastrous fashion. He is the problem and needs to go.
Wasn’t he our first pick in that particular draft? Maybe Fangio wasn’t the problem with Smith. Smith himself was the problem.
Seriously, I doubt there is another player that Grier has ever "scouted" as thoroughly as this kid and he was a complete and total bust. Just absolutely ridiculous stuff.
153 total defensive snaps played. Not even on the field enough for us to hate him due to how horrible he was, because he couldn't beat out UDFA/PS guys to get there.
Someone needs to take the keys away from Grier. He’s like a drunk driver who has been driving this franchise deeper and deeper into a giant stink hole and we as phin fans are like the friends at a party who are trying to prevent him from driving. “No man, give me your keys. You can’t drive. You’re ----ing drunk”. …and then we end up getting in the car with him anyway because he’s our only ride home. That’s the current state of being a phin fan.
I can't explain why, but Ross seems completely attached to him. After Grier was given a job as a scout by his dad with the Patriots (with no other qualifications), he was then immediately given that same job by the Dolphins (Wanny/Jimmy) when the elder Grier was fired by the Patriots in their regime change from Carroll to Belichick. Then in the middle of the mess between Wanny and Rick Speilman, Grier somehow weasled his way into becoming the Dolphins Assistant Director of College Scouting, despite that whole operation doing a horrible job from 2000-2002 after he'd joined the team. Then in his team in that role from 2003-2007, again its mostly a complete disaster, culminating in the drafting of Ted Ginn at #7 overall in 2007. It just got worse the entire time towards the handoff of the team from Huizenga to Ross. The whole operation should have been cleaned out at that point. But...somehow....Grier returned and gained more authority. He became the Director of College Scouting, a position he held from 2007-2015, through the various disasters of the Cameron, Sparano and Philbin regimes when the draft was just one bad turn after the next. He did nothing that seems worthy of keeping that position, and yet..... He was then promoted to General Manager in 2016, a position he's retained ever since, despite the lack of success that the team has had the entire time. And, he promotes and retains guys from within the team who have never known working for any other NFL org. Adam Engroff is our co-director of player personnel. He's been with the Dolphins 27 years. Never worked for another NFL team. Anthony Hunt is the other co-director of player personnel. Been with Miami for 32 years. Never worked for another NFL team. Clearly, they've done excellent work, right? Building all of those powerhouse Dolphins teams since then? Matt Winston is the Dolphins Director of College Scouting. He's been with the Dolphins for 18 years. Spent one year with the Texans as an intern before that. Certainly, the draft has been just awesome with him working under Grier in that role, right? Ron Brockington is the Senior Scout. 20 years with Miami. Where was he before that? The Jets of course, where he worked for our old buddy Tannenbaum. The team Ross was actually a fan of before he bought the Fins. These are the people running the operation, bringing in the players for the team. These are their credentials. Its obvious that nothing is going to change until Ross isn't the one at the top any more, and that we can only hope that change does eventually come when he's gone.
It’s probably due to something that happened at a crazy billionaire Eyes Wide Shut type of party or some s—t.
Sad part is, Ginn and Tannehill turned out to have longer than average careers, they're a couple of the better picks (even if they weren't the best options available at the time).
RT17 was a good-not-great QB on a team with terrible coaching that repeatedly put him in bad positions with the wrong offense. He showed what he was always capable of with Tennessee. Had he gone to Washington instead of Griffin at #2, he might have had a long, Pro Bowl filled career in Mike Shanahan's offense. He was better than Jake Plummer when he got going. Ginn was never more than a return man and gimmick guy. He wasn't even a good #3 WR most of the time.
Bro, Ginn had like a 10 year career. He wasn't worth #9, or whatever ridiculous spot he was picked, but he is still one of the better picks, which is sad. Like we've had legends like White and Dion Jordan and John Beck.
Agreed only time I remember us drafting well (and me actually following) was during the Jimmy Johnson years…
If a WR is drafted in the top ten, they production on the level of Waddle is the bare minimum expectation, IMO. Ginn's career was that of a guy I'd take in the 4th or 5th round as a ST/gimmick player.
How many players play for 10 years? Maybe 10%. So I think what he’s saying overall he wasn’t a bust and should be considered based on his longevity.
There are different levels of bust. Durham Smythe played seven years and 112 games for the Dolphins. The most of any skill position offensive player since Dan Marino retired! Was he worth a top draft pick in retrospect? I don't think many would say that he was, and that he basically lived up to his 4th round draft status.
Dude I even said he was not worth the pick. That isn't and never was his fault. The fact is, he had an NFL career that was like double the length of average, he wasn't a failure. It's sad that Ginn is one of our better picks of the past 20 years.
He was absolutely a failure for Miami. He carved out a role on other teams, which was good for him, but did nothing for us. He was absolutely a Miami bust. Like, was Sam Darnold a bust for the Jests? Absoluely 100% a bust. That he revived his career and is carving out a niche elsewhere doesn't lessen the failure he had in New York. But ultimately, it doesn't matter, and is just an example of the atrocious Miami drafting in general, which has been highlighted by the utter incompetence of Chris Grier at this point in time. I fear that he will weasel out of accountability yet again and be helming our offseason and draft (let alone the trade deadline). I am almost hoping the team does OK enough to save McDaniel and for him to go to Ross and demand Grier be removed. If you read into what the coaching staff is saying, it feels like they aren't happy with his decisions and the state of the team.
Sometimes the situation isn’t right for a player. Does that mean he was a bust for the team or they didn’t use him right? Look at Mac Jones. The system was horrible for him but he’s thriving in SF.
Dion Jordan was a bust. Patrick White was a bust. Ted Ginn Jr was not a bust. He was a productive part of the team both at receiver and returns. I would agree, his production did not match his draft number, but that doesn't make him a bust.
They were all busts for us - Jordan is an all time NFL bust. Ginn wasn't anything more than a niche/bit player for us and as a first rounder that is a bust. You absolutely take into account draft position. A 7th rounder isn't really a bust because you don't expect anything from them and they rarely do much. A first rounder that doesn't produce is not only a failure themselves but also a missed opportunity at other elite producing players. This is a dumb and pointless discussion because ultimately neither Ginn nor the team was worth squat and continuing it is just arguing for arguments sake.
I mean, I like understanding where people are coming from. I don't agree that he was a bust. Not his fault we drafted him that high.
