I just saw this breaking on minor news sites that Miami gabbed rookie Cam Miller off the Raiders practice squad. That seems like an odd move for January and he's on the active roster as of today. Doing a little homework, he was great at North Dakota in college but didn't impress this year in pre-season. Someone will be cut today to make room for this signing.
That’s an odd January move…AND to be on the active roster. What would really bake your noodle is if Tua was relegated to the practice squad.
Basically it means that as long as they want to keep him on the active roster, he's under Dolphins control through the 2028 season. I would expect that he'll be a contender to be Ewers backup next season if that's the direction they go.
If that were to happen it would be, to me, an open admission that Tua is physically broken, either the hip, arm, or brain...or all three.
I think it's just likely that they're shutting down Tua for the year. And if they have no intention of playing at all, then they probably just want someone else to be the emergency 3rd QB.
That is absolutely possible. But Miller does have enough potential upside and team control that it could be more. This isn't a 30 year old guy who would be a UFA in March.
That is true. But he's also a super late around draft pick who was signed off a practice squad of a team whose QB room is far from stellar. Then again, maybe we're both right and they just figured that if we're going to grab a 3rd QB, we might as well find one with some kind of potential.
