Rotation seems to be set at Lowe, Billingsley, and Kuroda. No indication of who the 4th is going to be. Will Torre go with a proven vet in Maddux or talented youngster Kershaw? Chan Ho Park also has starting experience as does Hong-Chih Kuo, someone my community follows with great enthusiasm.

I honestly don't like our 4th starter options. I think Torre will play it by ear. If it is a desperation type game, I think he starts Lowe in a pinch. If we are up 3-0 or 2-1, I think he will go with one of those options. Most likely Maddux. I would tend to want to lean towards Kershaw, but I understand the value of Maddux in that situation.

I know of some rookies who have come up in a pinch during clutch situations. John Lackey for one. I don't know if Kershaw can too but he's got good stuff. Interesting series in my opinion.

Blech. Man, momentum really swung around after that bad inning. Gotta hope they can turn it back at Dodger Stadium.

Manny got cocky raising his finger in the air rounding first base. Jose Reyes always makes that same mistake with the Muts.

Good win Dodger fans. I didn't think Moyer would be able to beat Koruda in LA....he is just too old and slow. Game 4 Monday will be big. I think the Phillies are in trouble if Rollins doesn't start hitting the baseball....I cannot believe he was the NL MVP last year. He actually had the nerve to call out Philly fans the last time he was in LA and say they were front runners. JRoll hasn't done crap. Every game so far has been decided by one big inning. First my Dolphins lose with 2 seconds left and now this. Nothing went right today.

I think the Phillies are in a good spot with their pitching. The bullpen is really good and I think Manuel managed it fairly well today. No one pitched too long so it shouldn't hurt them for tomorrow.

Lowe is a big game pitcher and really didn't do bad in Philly, just made two bad pitches the whole game and it cost him. I was excited to see the benches clear tonight. It gives the whole series an important big game atmosphere that I think was missing. At least on L.A.'s side.

It should be a fun one from here on out.

And I am going on record that if the Dodgers can't advance on, I am rooting for the Phillies to take the whole thing.

What a game today. The stadium was just loud. Just a great day for Dodgers fans especially since it was a miracle the freeways were smooth sailing tonight. Normally, I'd probably only be halfway home by now. This is looking like a home field advantage type of game so it could be close. Lookin forward to tomorrow. Anyone else going?

Tonight was a rough one. Had to have it. Oddly enough, my tiVo cut off after the 7th inning. I suppose it wanted to spare me the pain?

No matter what happens, no one expected L.A. to get this far and do what they did. I am proud of them and going forward, I think we have an even brighter future ahead of us.

went to this game tonight. it was fun, but we had 2 phillies fans with us. we were pretty sure they were going to get knifed. to be fair, the dodgers fans are pretty easy going and pale in comparison to philly's fans, but we were in the top far section and they were the only 2 phillies fans in our section. couple that with the guy sitting in front of us getting tossed from the stadium for flashing gang signs and it was sorta creepy. anywho, sad game, and a 3-1 its looking kinda grim

As a Phillies fan who lives in the area...JRoll is absolutely correct about his statement about the fans being front runners.

as a flyers fan from the philly area we are def. front runners for philly teams.

it's not so much "we love the team we hate the team" it's more of "if you do good we'll cheer our hearts out but one mistake and we boo you out of the game ourselves".

Same here. I know a couple of my friends from Taiwan were really rooting for Kuo and he did really well. I thought he should've stayed in instead of Wade and well, you know the rest. It's never over but it's a hard climb (of course, Manny and Lowe have done something similar :wink2: ).

Yeah unfortunately there has been a general decline in the quality and behavior of the fans in Chavez Revine in the last decade:pity: It used to be, back in the days of O'Malley family ownership, that the fans were very cool, except for the Giants fans, who would come to harrass even when the Giants were not playing, who were obnoxious. Also the quality of the ushers went way downhill after the O'Malley family sold the club, and I believe that has somewhat contributed to the increase in unruly behavior there:no:

I know Manny's getting there in terms of age but he's deserved to be re-signed and he doesn't look like he's slowing down any time soon. People that combine such power and fluid hitting mechanics are the kind that'll stick around for a long time. Wouldn't doubt if he could keep hitting the way he does at 40. But either Jones or Pierre, maybe both, should be gone or somewhere else in a best-case scenario. Things I see that need to be improved is more offensive production out of 3B and 2B. Kent could be gone and Nomar maybe.

That outfield could get pretty overcrowded if we re-sign Manny. Unless Pierre can play infield, no room for him and his contract. Nomar's a player and I wouldn't be opposed to having his experience around as a pinch hitter. He's been batting .429 against the Phils. If Kent wants to re-sign cheap and get another shot at a ring, I would not be opposed to that as well. Furcal is going to be a FA and rumor has it he's got real chemistry with Manny so as one goes, so might the other.

Manny is going to want crazy money. I would go after a couple cheaper guys....you could get two players at $12 mill per year rather than giving $25 mill to Manny. I also think Nomar and Kent's days are numbered. The team could also use another power hitter. The pitching is rock solid. Best of luck.

Nomar can be brought back only if he agrees to be a bench player...which he might go for. Kent should retire, or at least go away from L.A. His welcome has officially been worn out.

Besides, Blake DeWitt has found a home in L.A. at second base imo.

Furcal is a free agent and I don't know what to do with him. Perhaps a 1 year contract with a team option for years two and three? He is too much of a health risk to rely too heavily on him. Besides, Hu plays a great shortstop and was batting better towards the end of the season.

Casey Blake is a free agent too, and I think we should let him walk. He had a great contract year, but he is in his mid/late 30's and will never be this good again. Free agent options for third need to be explored.

Andruw Jones has one more year on his contract and then he is gone. Perhaps a trade can be made. Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier need to play everyday, no exceptions.

If the re-sign Manny, than you have a lineup that looks like this:

    SS Furcal
    RF Ethier
    LF Manny
    1B Loney
    C Martin
    CF Kemp
    2B DeWitt
    3B Player
    PITCHER

The fourth outfielder will be Pierre unfortunately, but the bench should consist of players such as Nomar, Hu, Backup Catcher and Jones if he can't be traded.

Look for the starting pitching staff to look WAY different.

    Gone: Maddux, Lowe, Penny

Still here: Billingsley, Kershaw, Kuroda, MacDonald (he will be a starter next year imo)

New? I expect L.A. to make a run at Sabathia and a few other (like Sheets, for example).

The bullpen is solid and most likely won't change too much. Broxton, Wade, Beimel, Saito, and a solid veteran should do the trick (Schmidt?)

All in all though, the success and direction will be linked to Manny. If he goes elsewhere, than the whole strategy of who to keep/trade/cut will change.

Nomar batted .429 this series and did a pretty good job relieving Loney for a bit at 1B. For a team as young as LA, they need his experience especially if Manny doesn't return. Don't forget Kemp. I'd rather have Manny, Kemp, Either because at least Kemp brings some pop in addition to SB's and he's got a heck of an arm. Underrated fielder right there. Blake is likely to return to Cleveland and he was a rock for us.

I don't know if we can get Sabathia without losing Manny or any other high priced FA batter because he'll want the $$$. If McCourt opens the wallet maybe but I think keeping Manny is just as important or maybe more than getting Sabathia. If you subtract Manny's contribution to the team, you'll be cutting every boxscore by more than half. That weighs more to me than a pitcher who plays every 4-5 games. Plus, you got Kershaw in the wings and really just need another serviceable starter.

That's one expensive 4th outfielder. I think MacDonald still needs to bake a little more in the oven before he's ready. Shame that Lowe is likely gone as is Blake. Don't forget about Kuo as he's been a real contributor for us and brings the heat. Broxton, Wade, Beimel, Kuo, Saito, and maybe even Maddux could be a bullpen to beat. Key here is whether McCourt will pursue both re-signing Manny and going for Sabathia. And then there's a hole at 3B with Blake likely gone which means Nomar could return there for cheap.

That would be almost a dream scenario for me. Nomar gets to continue providing veteran leadership and another chance at a ring, we keep our offensive catalyst, and we improve our pitching rotation ten-fold with CC.

Don't discount Matt Kemp's ability to field at center. He's got a much better arm+glove and we really need his offensive production. Pierre, I don't really see as much more than a pinch hitter or substitutional OF unless he can play SS or 3B.

  35. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

Macdonald may end up doing the Chad Billingsley of 07 gig. First half of the year in the bullpen, the next half in the starting rotation. Losing Lowe and Penny hurts due to their veteran leadership. I wouldn't be surprised to see L.A. try to do another reclamation rpoject for the back end of the rotation or something.

Kuo is great...when healthy. The problem is, he is never healthy. If I am Torre, I limit his appearances to try to keep him up and running. But you are right, he will be there next year

Pierre has been a mistake since we picked him up. His mistake was why L.A. signed Andruw Jones...which has turned out to be an even BIGGER mistake. Those two alone will account for close to 30 million dollars in salary next year. Combine that with Jason Schmidt's 15 million and you have a horrendously bloated, non contributing payrool already. Now tack on 20 mil a year for Manny and anywhere from 10-18 million a year for someone like Sabathia and pray that arbitration goes your way with the youngins.

I like Kemp a lot, but I no longer deem him untouchable. The hole in his swing and his constant baserunning lapses kill me. He needs to learn how to hit consistantly. He seemed fairly comfortable in the leadoff spot actually, but it feels like a waste to put his bat that early in the lineup. Plus, he strikes out a lot.

Ideally, if Manny goes elsewhere, I think I might end up letting Furcal walk too and go with an outfield of Kemp in left, Pierre in Center, and Ethier in Right. You get the speed at the top of the lineup with Pierre/Kemp and still have the improved kids in Ethier, Loney, Martin and DeWitt batting behind them. The lineup lacks pop, but the money set aside for a departing Manny can easily go towards adding a frontline start in C.C. and/or John Lackey or AJ Burnett, who might be available as well.

The bottom line is, I think we will need two starting pitchers, at least ONE veteran type (C.C. fits that bill imo) and a power bat somewhere. I don't know if a power bat is available in free agency this year as it looks like slim pickings outside of Teixera who will command a TON of money and has nowhere to play in L.A.

The offseason NEXT year will be a good one though. Andruw Jones, Jason Schmidt and a few others roll off the books, freeing up a ton of money to sign up our own guys long term and go after any holes we may end up with.

MacDonald has solid speed and control, not to mention a killer curveball but I think he needs a little more baking in AAA and offseason before he can be called up for sure. I would really hope we don't mess up with him the way we did with Edwin Jackson.

Kuo didn't miss any more time than Proctor and he's still the leader in K's out of the bullpen. He had a recurring elbow injury but after finally getting surgery, I think it looks as healthy as ever. He was hitting in the upper mid 90's which he hadn't done for years. Even did a solid job as a starter and especially that game against the Mets. With the elbow likely out of the picture for the near future, I dare say he may even get a look at starter especially if we can also keep Park, who's been solid himself out of the bullpen. Really getting out the Asian fans for this team (surprisingly none on the Angels)

Arbitration has always bit us on the ***. I wish there was an Allan Houston rule because we'd use it 3x already.

He's young and this is just the tip of the iceberg for him. It's just astonishing how much he reminds me of a young Manny with better speed. Both can be real headcases but they hit with pop and just exude a high level of confidence. I've read articles and heard tidbits on the radio that he's really picking up a lot from Manny especially with his hitting. If anything, that's another reason to keep Manny around.

In this league, power rules in the playoffs. Phillies showed why. Manny's pretty much our only guy with power and considering our struggles offensively pre Manny, despite solid pitching, we sucked. Pitching at the 3.00 ERA range is good and all, but when your team's scoring 2 or less, well, then it gets useless. We've seen tons of games where we lose 1-0, 2-0, etc. Enough is enough and I thought the Manny trade was an indication by the FO that they need to focus on power. As much as I would like to see a top-flite starter, I value a top-flite hitter like Manny more, especially when you have guys ready like Billingsley and Kershaw in the wings.

I really feel Tex will stay in the AL and possibly Angels. But I agree, we need a top veteran pitcher and a power bat. I would throw money at Manny or a top 5 hitter and pick between mid-upper tier starters than just get Sabathia and go back to impotent offenses. I'm just tired of seeing gooseeggs (guess who was the only person to score in Game 5?). We have never had a batter who caused pitchers to intentionally walk in a very long time and that's how we made it so far. If a creaky and juiced Bonds could be in the NL for so long, so can Manny.

I'm very hesitant on Boras, the baseball equivalent of Drew Rosenhaus. Just seems he hates working with the Dodgers, scratch that, he does hate working with us, so it'll be up to Manny to pressure him to stay. Frankly, he looks like he can hang around for another 4 years and still be a top dog. If Barry Bonds did it, he should too.

  39. Samphin

I don't go four years with Manny. two years at 30 million per would make him the highest paid player in MLB history (per season). I would go three years, but that is the max. Like it or not, he will be a liability in Left Field and guarenteeing him anything beyond his 40th birthday is too much of a risk in my opinion.

It would kill me to see him go to San Francisco though to spite us. I really think he is going back to the American League though. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up back in the AL East again either...

  40. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

But Barry was juicing, so it isn't accurate. Manny is already having trouble with fastballs on occasion. I think it would be a mistake to give him anything beyond three years max.

And Boras is scum. The smartest thing DePodesta did as G.M. was cutoff all talks with Scott. Too bad Coletti didn't follow suit. Now we are stuck with Andruw Jones for another year at 18 million per...:pity:
