me too.. he would have to use some of that vaunted electrical detection stuff because he would never "see" me...
I live in Florida...and I do not go in the water. I feel I have a decent chance with anything on land, but you walk in the water, step on a stonefish, and you die........................
Is it just me or does "hoping to stealthily track a great white shark" in a tiny plastic boat a very bad idea? Seems like the start of one of those stories "So there I was with nothing between me and a great white shark but a quarter inch of plastic....."
That reminds of that famous line between Richard Dryfuss and Roy Scheider in Jaws..."We're going to need a bigger boat."
What kind of idiot goes LOOKING for sharks in a kayak? Next he should go looking for hunters dressed like a deer.
Hahaha seriously, talk about book smarts but no common sence. Wow. First off, you cant "stealthily track" a shark, way to much sensory ability to do that. If you can see/track a shark, it knows your there. Secondly, when the sharks are twice as big as your "boat" you have a problem. A BIG freaking problem. Hope he learned from it at least. Ugh, that is my worst nightmare, sharks freak me out. I abjectly refuse to go in an ocean, hell, I refuse to go in anything larger than a puddle unless its a swimming pool! Dry land ftw. I blame Jaws quite frankly, scared the same thing outta me as a kid as that kayaker must certainly be trailing. Didnt read the whole article, but if he was travelling alone btw, who took the shot?
First off, the venom CAN BE fatal to humans IF not treated. A bee sting can be fatal as well. Secondly, there are no Stonefish in Florida or the enrtire Atlantic Ocean or Gulf for that matter. You're wasting your time here in FL! Get in the water dude! As to the original thread... that's an awesome picture! Secondly, what Marine Biologist worth his salt would actually think he could "stealthily track a Great White?" Plastic boat or not the senses sharks have are astounding and the thing would know he's there...... as evidenced by the "stealthy" hunter becoming the prey in the picture!
They're alot less effective on land though. I'm the same way. I live in FL, grew up in FL..and I rarely go in the water. Be it a shark or a sea turd I scream like a little girl either way.
I am certain I have seen a video of this event, taken from the same vantage point. I looked on you tube for it with no success
A. why did a helicopter happen to fly by during this rare-extreme episode, to capture pictures. B. that thing looks at least 18 feet
I think I had read somewhere that it was fake. Like that other picture with the big great white jumping out of the water at the guy and the helicopter.......
OOOO your right From an article guess it is real: "This incredible picture was taken by wildlife photographer Thomas Peschak - who had to tie himself to the high bridge of a nearby vessel and lean precariously over the ocean before he could get his shot. "
Could you be thinking of the student who was swimming with her classmates out in the middle of the ocean CNC? Good stuff about the photog hanging off the bridge, I don't know if you noticed but the kayaker is slightly looking back over his shoulder as if he has just become aware of the oversized mullet with teeth closing in on him....
after having watched the recent blue seas series that included those big boys coming out of the water, I have a decidedly different perspective on how effiecient a hunter great whites are.
Youve never watched Shark Week on Discovery?! Theyve had the amazing flying South African Sharks on for about 2-3 years now. The first time I saw it I was in awe, absolutely insane! For anyone who hasnt seen, the sharks basically wait for seals in deep water close to an island, then swim up vertically at high speeds and blow right through the surface of the water, often becoming entirely airborne. Have to see it to trully believe it though.
