Miami Dolphins "Ronnie Brown not yet elite, but as good or better than his contemporaries" - Realfootball365.com

"This isn't a bash piece centered on his lackluster performance last week against the league’s No. 1-ranked run defense (Brown ran 13 times for 27 yards versus Baltimore). Instead, the goal of this journalistic foray is to figure out where Brown stands thus far in the 2008 season; in addition, we'll see where he stands in comparison to other blue-chip running backs who have been drafted in recent years."

Please give it a quick read and let me know what you think. Comments on the article are appreciated!

    Nice write up.

I tend to fall in camp two. It's not all about touchdowns for me. If you can help yard to yard game to game then you can help run the clock. In my opinion that's what this team needs right now. I'll take the touchdowns and am very happy with them. In reality I believe Brown is somewhere in the middle of the two heading towards the top and not the bottom. I said a second ago that his yards are important to me but if you can bust an all important TD that wins a game out of the play that'll work, too.

There's the lack of fumbling that's high on my list.

Lack of fumbling is high on my list too!

Brown just needs to stay healthy and put together more games of the monster variety (like what he did against New England and San Diego) and less of the stinkers (like against Baltimore).

I'm hoping he comes out and rips up Buffalo. He certainly wants to beat a division foe and put that horrible game behind him.

    Edit: Nice write up also!!!

I agree. To be elite, you gotta produce after a year, even if you miss a game or two. Only at the end of the year can we say that.

    No doubt.

I should have used another example (Arizona or the Jets).

Very good write up. As good as anything I have seen in the media.
IJMO but Brown hasn't had the benefit of playing behind the same offensive line since he has been here and as a result hasn't formed the chemistry with his line needed for him to really shine. I think this line will eventually get to know his tendancies and he theirs and he will be more consistant. Brown has also played with how many changes in coaches, quarterbacks, fullback and tight ends? He hasn't really had the stability needed to enable him to play at an elite level.

I guess I'm one of those who feel that DTRB is already there. He is, in my opinion, the most exciting RB to watch today because of his style of running. He so reminds me of Zonk but he also adds that famous Smile after those brusing runs.

As for his lack of production in our 3 loses all I will say to that is; You can't produce if they won't give you the ball. Ronnie Brown has had 4 different OCs, 3 different HCs, and 4 different O-lines and yet given the ball 17-20 times a game he has never failed to produce, not once. The man has the heart of a winner, what more could you want in your RB plus he has soft hands.

As for him being hurt, Ronnie is in his prime and these next 2 years will show all just how good he is if given a chance. I just wish Dan were still playing, can you just see those two together? A match made in heaven.:wink2:

I think his recieving numbers are scewed by the fact that the ball isnt thrown his way alot, but when it is he's proven to be a solid reciever.

I don't think judging Brown this year is going to be as easy as it first appears. I still think he is one of the elite backs in the NFL and by the time the season is over hopefully his production will speak for itself.

If you compare his numbers this year to around about the same time last year where he got injured his production looks to have come off somewhat. 363 yards rushing this year as opposed to 526 yards last year over 6 games. 4.3 y/c vs 5.1 y/c last year. 11 catches for 108 yards vs 34 catches for 356 yards.

It's obvious Ricky has taken away those touches from Ronnie. Ronnie is one of those backs (like Ricky for that matter) who takes a while to get going and with getting 30% less touches than he did last season it's no wonder why he is not producing as he did last year. Most would agree he was on pace for a Pro Bowl year last year.

However, this front office has built this team for the long haul. As you touched on it in your article i think durabilty is the biggest factor that will weigh into his results when it's all said and done. He is being preserved right now with Ricky and when this long season draws on into the later stages of the second half I think we will see our running backs turning it on. They will look and feel fresher than the defense. As Parcells said -during the end part of the season players get slower not smaller. So if you have bigger backs like Ronnie and Ricky, they'll be going up against worn out defenses which have already endured a beating during several games. For example, if you take Sparano's fetish for play counts, Ronnie who has say 25 play counts a game against a defender that has say 50 play counts a game, I'll back Ronnie breaking more tackles in that match up. I think that is where you find more eye popping results as they pound it more and more. Thats just what i think anyway.

Great points, especially about Brown being a guy that gets better when he gets more touches.

I also agree that the duo of Ricky and Ronnie will do a lot of damage in the latter stages of the season.
