Torain carrying hype into delayed debut with Broncos

    FULL ARTICLE

I was watching and reading some videos and articles out of Denver, and this guy is getting a lot of hype. Some of the buzz is that Ryan "The Train" Torain is the next Terrell Davis to come out of Denver, even coming from Shanahan's own mouth. With Shanahan's ability to hand-pick talent at the RB position, and utilizing them in his Zone Run Scheme attack has to be something that the 'Phins need to keep a close eye on this Sunday.

Torain is a pretty big guy, 6'1 225 lbs.

The Dolphins aren't allowing much against the run this season, but if Cutler can get things going, there might be a lot of Torain/Pittman running at us this week.

Pittman has been hampered with injuries leading up to the bye week with a neck stinger or sprain and bruised ribs, thus allowing Torain to get more practice snaps and a legitimate chance to have his first NFL regular season game this Sunday.

Miami, I think, has only allowed 2 running backs a game of 100+ yards so far this season.

Just something I thought we could keep an eye on. What are your thoughts?

Man, I had no idea Torain was from Topeka.

For me, the RB matchup is all about how our LBs handle cutbacks. Like Houston, Denver runs that zone blocking scheme with their offensive line, which allows for natural cutback lanes. Denver has had more practice and more success with it. We didn't defend the run very well against Houston, in which allowed Slaton and Green to gouge us.

I'm specifically watching Ayodele and Crowder in this game, because if they over pursue (something they've been known to do), then Torain and Pittman will have large holes to run through on the backside. We simply can't allow the Denver running game to get going with the cutbacks. It will kill us.

we simply can't let "The Train" Torain to reign on our terrain.

Mike pittman, a denver running back, not sure about that one, they make some questionable player accuisition moves over there in denver.

First thing first, we need to stop their potent passing attack, I'm hoping Marshall and Scheffler still aren't 100%, but even if they aren't-- they are still very dangerous. Also still have to watch out for Eddie Royal and Chad Jackson. IF we can get pressure and contain their receivers, I'm confident we'll never have to deal with their running game. IF they can get their running game going, it's not going to bode well for us.

Truth be told, I'm more worried about Cutler and Marshall than I am about the running game. I expect to see Denver come out and try to pass to set up the run. Shanahan will come out very aggressive.

The Dolphins are definitely going to have to go into Denver with their A-Game. Playing in Mile High is going to be a task to tackle in itself. They have so many weapons for Cutler is just plain scary.

I'm hoping that Porter can get past Clady and Roth as well. We definitely need our LB's to continue to step up, maybe even more this week if we hope to take home a win. This is going to be a tough game, and I an envision sort of a shoot out if we can get our passing game going against their weak secondary.

Shanahan has the ability to take some mediocre RB's and make them look like superstars. I'm not saying Pittman is mediocre, but just look at production numbers from RB's that come out of Denver going to other teams and vice versa.

I like Torain a lot. He's a big back as you mentioned that can carry the load. I believe he had some injury issues at ASU but was a good talent. Him and the other RB, I want to say Keagan but that's wrong, were nice.

Yeah i read that he had a foot injury that limited his production. Still his production at ASU was good enough to be in the top 10 and he only played there for 2 years. He earned plenty of accolades playing there and was invited to play in the East/West shrine game.

Should we be worried about their ground game this week? They've been having ball handling problems there and probably want to get out of their lulls and come off the bye with their best foot forward, and that to me means they are going to try to run the ball to set some sort of tone.

I could be wrong, they could do what we did last week against Buffalo and come out swinging for the fences. This game has me worried, but we always come to play against top tier teams. Could this be another game similar to San Diego?

Yeah I want to say he (Torain) tore his ACL but I can't remember. He's been through a lot in his life. There was a story done on ESPN about it but I can't recall what it was about.

I think we will have to worry about their ground game. We all know they're a very good passing team and we struggle in the secondary. We may be expecting pass when we come into that game and Shanahan is smart so he would probably go to the run early and hope for success. If they have a successful ground game against, this game won't be pretty IMO. Clady on the left side is a really impressive player and if I was them, I'd run behind him. On the Dolphins side of things, you hope Porter can blow up the run and be a problem in the backfield. He did it against Jason Peters of Buffalo but Peters has been struggling this year. I watched Clady against New England and I thought he displayed great strength and great use of his hands. He moves his feet well. I think it was Vrabel who tried to use a double-spin on Clady and Clady just kept sliding his feet like an NBA defender would.

Denver does have a very poor defense. In my opinion, they're one of the worst secondaries out there. Bly struggles with quicker WR's while the rest of the secondary is average without Champ Bailey. The defense as a whole does read the play well but are a very bad team when it comes to reacting. They move backwards and away from the ball carrier when it comes to run defense. Just what I saw from them. They're also a poor tackling team but what we can't dismiss is how they are capable of playing. They've been a mess but in the Tampa game, they did a very good job of limiting the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers don't have a vertical pass offense and Denver held them to only thirteen points. In the Tampa game, the Buccaneers played very well in the run game and the pass game with a 72% completion percentage between two QB's and a 6.65 yard per carry average from the RB's. They tackled well and displayed good read and react skills on defense. On offense, they didn't run the ball well and Marshall wasn't a factor but Cutler played mistake free ball and distributed the ball to multiple WR's. It wouldn't shock me if they did it again against us. We run the ball well and we're not a vertical offense. The same applies to the Bucs. Also, Shanahans teams play well after a bye week so IMO, this game shouldn't be overlooked nor should anyone here be overconfident but that's just my opinion.

Couldn't agree more, I hope they haven't gotten things together and come out slow this Sunday. I was watching some of their post-practice interviews and those guys looked like they were working hard. They're definitely going to be ready for us, we need to come out swinging again like we did against Buffalo and keep opening it up on offense. Ginn contributed well last week, and as weak as their secondary is I can envision him having another great game. Maybe not as good as last week, but hopefully 100+ receiving yards and finally getting a TD.

San Diego should have won that game early on in the season against the Bronco's, and not trying to make some sort of valid argument, but if we can beat San Diego we can definitely beat the Chargers.

Maybe we come out with some new wrinkle with the WildCat and totally destroy their defense and having them reeling all day. If that happens the games going to be all in Cutler's hands and we just can't let him get any sort of rhythm. I say we are going to nullify their ground game, Marshall is going to continue his production from the weeks before the bye, and Cutler gets his head ripped off by Porter. That's my take.

Oh and Torain (if he plays) will have his welcome to the NFL tackle by Matt Roth.

I'm glad to hear that he may not play against us. I expected him to see limited action anyways as I think he's coming off of elbow surgery or something. He was expected back in seven weeks so I don't know what's up with him not playing.

I wish we'd run some slants to Ginn and the rest of the WR core.

I'm not sure San Diego is a much better team than Denver to be honest with you. The Chargers secondary is toast week in and week out, like the Broncos. They haven't looked the same tackling wise either, they're not as physical as last year. Should we beat the Broncos? Not sure. Can we? Absolutely.

Cutler's my favorite QB in the league but I hope he doesn't light up our secondary. Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson lit us up and I think Cutler is a much better QB than Schaub. Johnson and Marshall are both up there with the best of them. Marshall is very physical at 230 pounds and might be the second hardest WR to tackle, outside of Boldin in Arizona. I think we'll see some blitzes from the Miami defense. I just hope we don't over-pursue on run defense because that could bite us in the behind. Roth has to force the Denver RB's back inside.

It's better to be ready for all aspects, than to ignore some. I was reading some about him playing, and some about him not playing. I was just sharing something interesting for us to read.

Michael Pittman is injured, he says his ribs are feeling a little better but he's still not 100%. Torain is the only healthy RB Denver has and to think they won't get him some playing time this week, well, if I was planning for the game I wouldn't overlook him. Especially being touted as the next TD.

Pittman has been the shining star IMO for us this year. He is the only one that is more solid and gets positive yardage when he runs the ball. 3rd and 1 or 2 = I Like Mike.

Selvin Young isn't producing as we had hoped for and Andre Hall had fumble fingers against NE that got us fans grumpy.

We're looking forward to seeing Torain and what he may bring to the table. It is possible he may not play until the Cleveland game next Thursday but we'll see what Shanny has up his sleeve come Sunday.

We're going to need to open up our ground game, I'm not sure we can just go out there and expect that the running game is going to work. Denver is definitely going to gameplan on defense against our ground attack. Hitting receivers like Ginn when there's 8 men in the box would be devastating against them and I hope they stack the box.

They're very similar teams, LT hasn't been productive this year so they are relying heavily on their passing game. They lost Chambers who is a big physical receiver as we all know, who can go up and challenge anyone for the ball. I'm not calling Chambers a Brandon Marshall but both offenses seem very similar. Chambers/Marshall, Scheffler/Gates, Royal/Jackson, Rivers/Cutler. Just gotta go out there and play the game and stop Cutler from rolling out and making plays. We need to contain him and not let him pick us apart.

We had our problems with Andre Johnson, that catch late in the game over Yeremiah Bell was a thing if beauty and disgust at the same time. Hopefully changes we've made in the secondary can patch up some of the glaring issues we've seen in the first half of the season. Blitzing should come from all over the place, Crowder, Bell. Throw in a corner blitz here and there and keep them guessing what packages we're throwing at them. Hopefully we can disguise some coverage and make some INT's.

We need to step it up in the INT department, Will Allen needs some hands, and Yeremiah needs to not play tentative. Not to mention Andre' "I can't catch" Goodman. I wish he's lose that moniker.

yeah, youre right about torain and the other back was/is keegan herring. those two were the main backs for the sun devils last season, but torain got hurt and in came dimitri nance. im pretty sure that torain injured some ligament in his foot last year causing him to miss quite a few games.

in 2006 torain was pretty much a badass for a sun devil.

Hasn't Selvin Young been hampered with injuries for a few weeks?
If Andre Hall played crappy last week don't you think Shanny will give Torain some touches? I'm sure plenty of fans are calling for Torain after the game a couple weeks ago.

You got that right. We were ready to run Hall out of town after that fiasco and the call for Torain is echoing all across the Rocky Mountains.

Selvin was/is hampered by a groin injury.

That's what it was Keegan Herring! Thanks Higgi. Torain was definitely a beast and he impresses me. It was a good choice by the Broncos.

Yeah, that's what I've been saying or implying. The Denver defense versus the Buccaneers could show up instead of the one against the Patriots.

Absolutely. Similar on offense and defense from both teams.

I'm hoping we see Jason Allen on Marshall with Bell over the top, Will Allen on Royal and Goodman covering the slot, whomever the Broncos choose to put in there (Stokley or Martinez, etc).

Goodman is a very inconsistent player imo. He plays well one game and then plays absolutely putrid the next two. Allen finally got an INT last week on baseball-like popup. Hopefully some of those continue with the pressure being applied from Starks, Ferguson, Merling, Holliday and the 'backers.

Thought you might find this interesting regarding Torain. From his latest blog:

Pretty much sums up what I said earlier. We just don't know what Shanny will do but I have a sneaky feeling you may see Ryan especially if we are behind.

    Ready and Waiting

Ladies and gentlemen, the time has (possibly) come.

All I know is I’m most definitely excited to get on the field if Coach calls my name. Like I’ve been saying, I’ve got to be ready if it happens, and right now I know I will be.

Over the bye week, as you all know, I just stayed a couple extra days and conditioned, working out with Coach Tuten. I did some more rehab and studied my playbook — just did a couple of extra things to get right. Get my mind right and my body right. I did have some time to relax though, on Saturday and Sunday, then we were back in here on Monday.

I have noticed one change, though. More and more reporters are coming to my locker during open locker room. It went from having maybe one person come and talk with me to having every camera in the place all gathered around me. It’s not overwhelming or anything like that, though. I’m just answering the questions, telling them what’s going on. The question that’s been asked the most is, “Are you getting playing time?” or “Are you starting?” I can’t answer either of those. Both of those are a game time decision. I don’t know yet, so I’ve just got to stay patient, stay on my Ps and Qs and be ready for everything that could possibly be thrown my way. Then I can go out there and have some fun.

Speaking of reporters, Mike Pittman’s locker is beside mine, and I hear reporters asking him about me occasionally. He’s been real cool, always having my back and kind of lifting me up as I get back closer to the field. He’s a true professional. I’ve been saying since day one, I just kind of listen a lot. I don’t ask a lot of questions. I don’t irritate people. I just kind of watch and listen, and I especially just watch how Mike Pittman carries himself. He is most definitely a guy I can learn from, just the way he goes about his business, and you can see what his results are like on the field, too.

I’ve noticed some of you coming up with nicknames for me. The Train. ATV: The All-Torain Vehicle. I like them all. Throughout college, guys called me so many different kinds of names. Everybody’s trying to make something up, but those are similar to the names that have been used in the past. I’m OK with either one of those, most definitely. It’s whatever you all feel is best. I’ll roll with it.

Somebody asked me last week what I can bring to the offense. One word: excitement. Just that want-to-be-out-there. I want to have a good time. Because I know I’m going to be enthusiastic when I’m out there, so hopefully I rub off on everybody and we’re just all out there making huge plays. Then build from that and win the game.

The Dolphins are up next at our house, and like I’ve said all along, and even before in this blog — if Coach calls my name, I’ll be ready. See you all at the game.

This has me even more convinced that we're going to see this guy come Sunday. If we don't then great, if we do we had better be ready. This guy is humble, if I was a Bronco's fan I'd already be excited.

The excitement level is definitely there. And he is humble. Love the attitude.

It's a little hard to put too much pressure on him. He could come in and stink up the joint. Fumble the ball from nerves. Only get a few touches.

Or maybe he could come in and rack up 235 yards on you guys. :D

I'll go for stinking up the joint for 500 alex.

Seriously, he has nothing to lose, he's probably the #1 RB on the team health-wise, and you guys could use something to excite and spark the offense. When do you bail on your previous offensive gameplans if they're not getting the job done? I wouldn't be surprised to see something unpredictable this weekend from both teams.

    Watch out for the WildCat!!
