Brought this up at another site. I mean, based on what we've seen through eight games so far, do we really have a handle on who will win the division? At this point, you could make a case both for and against each team. Well, so I did:

    Enjoy!

    Bills:

Why they will win the AFC East: They probably have the most talent of any of the division's offenses. Edwards is still raw, but is poised enough to make plays, and is wise beyond his years. Lynch is like a bigger Barry Sanders sometimes, and Lee Evans is as legit a deep threat as there is. The o-line can maul at times. While the defense isn't shut-down great, it makes it's share of plays as well. And while the team is currently in a slump, all it will take is a big win next week to turn it around, and fix things entirely, riding the great November-December home-field advantage to the division title.

Why the Bills will finish in last place: This is just the beginning of the end. Edwards is totally exposed now, and was clearly overrated a couple weeks ago. He is showing his inexperience w/ his rash of turnovers the past two games. And he has gone from cool in the clutch to clinching defeat in the clutch. The pass defense is weak, as was pointed out last week in Miami. And Lynch, while very talented, tends to run left-to-right too much, instead of using his power to blast forward more often. The Bills were flying high until they started playing AFC East games. So far, not good!

    Jets:

Why they will win the AFC East: Favre is not the most prolific passer in the league's history by accident. He is good, a proven winner. He's struggled a bit lately, but he's still come through to help the team to two straight wins to put them back in a tie for first. He will only get better down the stretch, and is perfectly situated to play in the cold Meadowlands in December. He'll drive you nuts from time to time, but he'll make more plays for you than against you. Leon Washington is just beginning to tap his potential. He's as exciting a player as there is in the league when he gets in the open field. And your WRs are quality ball catchers, who will only get better w/ an improving and more comfortable Favre. Yesterday's huge division win on the road shows the Jets are just beginning to hit their stride.

Why the Jets will finish in last place: Favre is totally overrated at this point in his career. He's always been a gambler, but now he can't make up for his mistakes the way he used to. And the more chances he takes, at this point in his career, that means more bad than good for his team. Look at last year w/ the Packers. In his team's most clutch moment, when they needed him the most, he threw yet another interception. When the team had every advantage over the opponent. While his acquisition was the biggest story of the offseason, it will be shown to backfire on this squad, which clearly would be better off w/ a more economical Pennington back there making decisions. And while the team had a huge win over the Bills, it is clear the Bills are now overrated. And the win the week before was pulled out at the last minute, at home, over the lowly Chiefs! Not good.

    Patriots:

Why they will win the AFC East: The team loses - perhaps - the greatest QB of the past 20 years in it's first game, and is still 5-3. That alone proves this team is not just Tom Brady, and is more about good coaching and veteran leadership. It can be expected that - with an improving Cassel, this team should be able to ride out the rest of the season to 10-6, 11-5, still claiming their division title, which has become so routine for them. Despite the problems thrown at this team, BB somehow finds guys to fill holes, and finds ways to win. When it comes down to crunch time in the AFC East, the cream will rise to the top, Brady or no Brady.

Why the Patriots will finish in last place: This team has achieved it's current 5-3 record w/ smoke and mirrors, barely eeking out home wins against the lowly Chiefs and Rams. Blowouts against the Dolphins and Chargers show that this team is not what it used to be. And losing to a struggling Colts team doesn't help either. This may be the high point for this team, which has a slew of big division games coming up, including one against a team that handled it easily, and another against a team hell bent on revenge. W/ possibly two losses in the next three games on the horizon, the Patriots are about to begin their dissent into mediocrity and worse. The sad truth is, as Brady goes, so go the Patriots. And has anyone seen Brady's knee lately ...

    Dolphins:

Why they will win the AFC East: Everything Bill Parcells touches apparently turns to gold. This team has four big wins this season now that cannot be denied. After it's early season struggles that lead them to 0-2, the team has stormed back w/ a 4-2 record, including one last-second loss that could easily have gone in their favor. The Dolphins are hot, and have the league's easiest schedule the rest of the way. Chad Pennington and Joey Porter are battling for the comeback player of the year award, and are playing w/ multiple chips on their shoulders. There is a lot of hidden talent on this team, which is just beginning to tap it's potential. W/ Pennington's leadership on offense, and Porter's on defense, the team is just hitting its stride. They are well coached, well prepared, and have already proven their ability to handle division opponents, w/ a 2-1 record, including an opening-game loss against the Jets that was close at the very end. The Dolphins are headed in the right direction, full speed ahead, at the right time of the season.

Why the Dolphins will finish in last place: Clearly, the Dolphins are far improved, and - no matter what - will be relatively happy w/ any result the rest of the way. But this team is .500 at best, probably worse. While they've been one of the top stories of the season so far, the truth is, they lack depth to back up a relatively talented group of starters. Chad Pennington is playing out of his mind so far, but there's a reason the Jets let him go for nothing. Joey Porter has played inspired, but he'll likely burn out as November turns into December. Yes, the schedule is easy, but this also includes December trips to traditional unfriendly places such as the New Jersey Meadowlands and Buffalo-stand-in, Toronto. A warm weather team playing in a cold city in December spells trouble. W/ three other talented teams in this division, it's hard to imagine the Dolphins overcoming these odds to be more than .500

I can definitly see what your saying but I think the Dolphins win this divison and its not homerism speaking. If you looking at the divison all three teams above us have barely beat the teams that are consider to be the easy games....KC, Oakland, STL...but the harder teams for them yet to play, but us on the other hand have beaten some of the harder games and leaves mostly the easier games to go.

    Nice writeup bro.

I think that this highlights something that's true of most of the NFL this year - pretty much every division is up for grabs. I mean, sure we've got the Titans and the Giants who have looked pretty good thus far, and are arguably the favorites to get to the Super Bowl, but after that it's a crap shoot.

Miami could finish 6-10 this year or surprise everyone and end up at 10-6 and in the playoffs. It's that kind of crazy year.

Awesome write up. I thought hte bills but their divisional record might hurt them in the event of a tie. I like the dolphins right now but they have ground to gain yet on the three teams ahead of them.

The jets are too inconsistent to give them a vote. And the pats are continuing to mount injuries.

I think Buffalo eliminates the tie breaker caveat and just wins the div. outright. Of course that prediction could and most certainly will change in the next three weeks.

    This is one exciting division...FINALLY.
