I understand Bill Parcells has the ability to turn the Dolphins around really quickly. I am very happy about the hiring, however, at the same time I have my share of concerns about him. Part of my concern is the fact that Parcells only stays on with teams for approx 2 or 3 years before he decides to leave.

It seems to me Parcells is looking to hire a coach in which he could micro-manage. Coaches like Tony Sparano, Charlie Weiss, Romeo Crennel, etc., etc.,.....Both you and I know we would not be hiring any of the coaches Bill Parcells has mentioned, if he weren't here.

So my major concern is mostly about our long term future..... In 3 years, when Bill decides to jump ship, we will be stuck with a coach whom does not know what to do because Parcells won't be here anymore telling him what to do. Similar to the situation Jimmy Johnson put us through when he decided to refer Wanny to Miami. If Parcells decides to hire a new coach, he needs to select an intelligent one that will be eager to learn from him and not one whom he feels he can simply micro-manage for the time being.

Wanny was a proven loser and incompetent GM in Chicago. Why in gods name Wayne thought he would be better here is beyond anyones comprehension really.

As for Parcells leaving and the coach not knowing what to do, I think thats just being a bit silly. Sparano is being interviewed in Atlanta as well, so hes a bonafide candidate. Really, I dont think Parcells is setting up to micro-manage the Dolphins for 2-3 years and then leave us directionless. Ireland is a step in the right direction, a good young talent evaluator who could helm the front office for years to come. Just get a HC with the same traits and we are set up for longterm.
I think Parcells likely will only be here for a short time (id say maybe 3-4 years) but in that time he is teaching and imparting knowledge, not just sitting there pulling puppet strings.

When it comes to Parcells and any track record for his tenure the hard part is converting that to VPO roles vs. HC.

Its not a direct 1 to 1 correlation to state his past MO will equal his present since the roles and responsibilities are so different.

I think the difference is that JJ learned from Parcells, not the other way around. I remember reading interviews where JJ speaks about the Tuna.

There are a number of coaches who started out under Parcells who are head coaches of winning teams right now in the NFL, there are no coaches that started under JJ who can make that claim. Norv was already around before JJ hired him.

my concern is that everyone he's hired so far are his "friends" from previous jobs. while im sure they are all qualified people for the roles they are going to play, it just makes me feel uncomfortable. especially in the sense that... knowing that parcells has previous relationships with ireland, the two assistants he kept, and sparano (if he comes) will bill then be more lenient when it comes to these guys? for example, keeping them around longer than they should be should things not work out only for teh reason of their relationships with one another. also, if bill leaves... are these guys really going to want to stay here? while im excited about the changes that are taking place, the fact that all his new hires are "friends" or all those he worked with in dallas... worries me just a bit. are these the right guys for the job? or are they here simply because Bill likes them, and has worked with them in the past??

im sure im over thinking it... but... its just sometihng in the back of my mind that bugs me about all this.

keep talking crap about Wannstedt.....hes the last coach that led us to a playoff game, and the last coach who gave us a winning season.

yeah, Wanny sucked. now i agree he sucked at drafting, but not as a coach.

Bill is setting us up for the long haul....we got Ireland in place now....keep on mind that this is it for Parcells so he won't be leaving and taking everyone with him.....he's gonna get us in the right direction and put the right people in place. If he leaves after that then is ok with me.

    Ozzy rules!!

    Colorado Dolfan ...dirty drownin' man?

    He sucked as a coach.

All that talent and how many playoff wins?

Just like in Chicago. Someone builds up the team, Wanny comes in and tears it all down...

The loss to NE that kept us from making the playoffs sealed the deal on how bad a coach he was.

    Absolute nonsense.

Sparano is a head coaching candidate on his own merits. Just because he's running the show doesn't mean Parcells is going to constantly micro-manage the coach, or that the coach chosen can't exist without Parcell's "help". I think people are getting a bit carried away with Parcell's role on this team.

This is not the same situation as with Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstadt. Wannstadt was actually a pretty good X's and O's guy. His downfall was that he was a lousy personnel man. Jeff Ireland is highly respected around the league, and will hopefully take care of the talent part.

Parcells is 66 years old. He's here to build a football organization and will play a major role until that job is finished. He is going out of the way to hire the best people he sees fit so he doesn't have to play Nanny when the job is done.

I can understand the concerns about Parcells leaving us hanging in a few years, but I think the concern regarding his ability to groom successful NFL head coaches is a bit unfounded. Parcells has several protege's in the league, Belichick, Payton, Coughlin. Those guys have done pretty well. I am sure that whoever is chosen for the position will be someone in the same mold.

Conversely, someone like Jimmy Johnson had one protege, Wanny, and, well, we all know how that turned out.
