'Zack and Miri' Banned in Utah

Zack and Miri Make a Porno If you're looking forward to seeing Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks in director Kevin Smith's new R-rated comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" this weekend and you live in Salt Lake City, you might be out of luck. Utah Jazz and Megaplex Theaters owner Larry Miller has refused to book the film. The chain's spokesman Cal Gunderson expressed concerns about the film with The New York Post, citing the film's "graphic nudity and graphic sex" and that it was "too close to an NC-17."

The company's standards seem a little odd considering that the chain had no problems screening ultra-violent fare like "Saw V," which features beheadings and explicit self-mutilation. When asked why Megaplex Theaters did not object to the gory horror sequel, Gunderson had no comment.

Furthermore, the company's decision might make sense if "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" were in fact pornographic. Instead, Kevin Smith's surprisingly tame and sentimental movie has a few flashes of nudity, a handful of love scenes played mostly for laughs, and a whole lot of foul language. In fact, the film's raunchiness level is comparable to that of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin", "Knocked Up" and "Sex Drive," all of which screened at Megaplex theaters.

It has been a difficult road for Kevin Smith's film, but it is not the first time he has encountered resistance to his frank and bawdy sense of humor. His first film "Clerks" was originally rated NC-17 for language, and his religious comedy "Dogma" sparked protests from Catholic groups. For "Zack and Miri," he again was forced to appeal an NC-17 rating with the MPAA, a teaser trailer had to be removed from his website, and the battle over the poster resulted in a design where the stars only appear as stick figures.

So what's the problem with this movie? The word "Porno" in the title. Aside from Larry Miller's theater chain, fifteen newspapers along with several TV stations and billboard owners have been refusing to promote the flick across the country because of that word. As Philadelphia deputy mayor Rina Cutler said in a phone interview with The Wall Street Journal, "If they want to call the movie 'Zack and Miri,' that's fine, but Zack and Miri cannot make a porno on my bus shelters."

This isn't the first time Miller's company caused controversy by banning a movie. In early 2006, Miller pulled Oscar-nominated movie "Brokeback Mountain" from the screens when he learned that the film was a gay love story between two cowboys. He later stated that he regretted that decision.

As a footnote to this story, this past weekend an audience full of children and pre-teens expecting to see the G-rated "High School Musical 3" at one of Miller's theaters in South Jordan, UT were surprised when the beginning of the R-rated "Sex Drive," which features nudity and swearing, was shown accidentally. But at least they didn't see Seth Rogen in his underwear.

"Zack and Miri Make a Porno" opens everywhere (almost) on Friday.

That is so screwed up. Now I'm definitely going to see it today-maybe my ticket will help offset the stupidity of Utah.

Or maybe not, but I want to see it anyway.

Pagan I think your title is wrong. To use the word "become" implies that there havent been uptight douches in this country since it was founded by the Puritans 400 years ago. These people are only continuing the trend :pity:

Dude owns the theaters and has a right to show what he wants...... Though I agree its kinda odd to single out one movie like this. Makes no sense at all when you really thing about it but still, as owner he can do what he wants.

This country needs to remove the Bible from its ***.

I bet this theater owner has a bigger collection of porn than I do. I'd even bet he has some gay stuff in there too. Not just lesbo stuff either. Dude on dude stuff. He just wanted the copy of Brokeback Mountain for himself.

BTW, just got back from the movie. It's got to be as close to a NC-17 rating as you can get while still getting a R rating. It was like a Skinemax program combined with typical Kevin Smith level vulgarity. Pretty funny and fun.

Who would want to see Seth Rogen play the same character over and over and over and over again anyway?

He is getting into Will Ferrell acting range.

That's not the point. Of course he can show what he wants. It's the rationale behind his decision that's annoying.

He'll show "Saw" with no problem worrying about what the public views, but because he's a sexually repressed douchenozzle he won't show the new Smith film.

The fact that he had no comment when asked why he showed "Saw" but not this movie says more than anything else.

So a private company doesn't have the right what they choose to put into the place of business they own knowing the market they operate in?

What do you guys want to do? Tell every business owner what they can and can't do as a business practice?

Let's not go all liberal nutsy over this.

To ban a movie because of one word in the title is the height of overly religious douchebaggery.

You didn't know? Sex is carnal, and of the devil. It is ungodlike too.

Oh yeah, women are by nature evil temptresses that need to be suppressed by men because they seduce men by simply existing. Because of Eve, mankind fell into sin.

I went to see it the other night. Admittedly, I was off my face and was escorted out of the theater with 10 minutes to go, but from what I remember, it was hilarious. Justin Long is so great as the low-talking gay pornstar.

Seriously, I can see why people might object to the content of the film - but watching the film and promoting the film are two different things. Free choice, freedom of decision should be independent from freedom of interpretation. If they were promoting the movie by having people make a porno at the bus shelter, there would be right for complaint. But using the word 'porno' itself becomes a crime? That's where the uptight douchery comes into it.

The irony is, of course, by all of this 'slandering of liberalism in middle-america' controversy, the movie is still being promoted, and those who are so terrified of words such as 'sex' and 'porno' have just gone and effectively shouted said words from the rooftop. Only difference is, they're promotion doesn't cost Kevin Smith a cent!

    Prudence never pays, children.

I checked this out tonight. I was quite surprised to find that the theater was packed. I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan, and I've found his lesser films (Jersey Girl, Clerks 2) to be enjoyable, but I've always preferred his earlier work, or films that tried to actually tell a story (Chasing Amy, Dogma).

I found the film to be a return to form for Smith as a director - in a lot of ways it's Clerks of the amateur porno world, set in a coffee shop instead of a convenience store. The dialogue is great - the best since Mallrats in my opinion - and the performances are all hilarious.

In some ways this is similar film to Dogma - in that it approaches a taboo subject (in this case sex), and deals with it in a comedic, but still touching way. The main subject material centers more around the relationship of Zack and Miri as they make a Porno, and while a tad predictable, the jokes and gags keep the story moving along nicely.

I liked the fact that Smith used more than just his usual players (though there are several who play prominent roles), and freed himself up from his usual setting of New Jersey. It leads to him taking chances with the film, and most of those pay off. Overall it's a pleasant return to form for Smith, easily my favorite film since Jay and Silent Bob.

Overall, a good film with a good heart, and there's really nothing controversial beyond the concept presented in the title. One other thing - if you decide to check out the film (and I would recommend you do), make sure you stay for the credits. Trust me. As I sad at the outset, I'm a bit biased because I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan, but I would give this 4.5 out of 5 stars.

    Utah?

    Nothing really new with that.

I was considering opening up an internet site that might of had some....objectionable content...

I had this server host company all set up as their prices were great....until I told them what was up and they say they weren't allowed too since their servers are based in Utah and the Utah state laws won't allow them to.

    So....yeah...
