What happened to that penalty called holding? Do they even call it anymore?

They better aggressively go for the first down here. Va Tech is going to get the back back with plenty of time regardless. It would be silly to just sit on the ball, run off a few seconds, and punt it.

First down = game over, 7-3, 4-2 in the ACC.

I knew this would happen after failing to get 7 on three straight 1st and goal possessions.

We need a turnover now, or a big sack.

A great win, I'll take it. Even with field goals it's still nice to beat those guys. Somewhere in prison Michael Vick just dropped the soap.:shifty:

    Thoughts On The Game

I thought it was a great game for us. We should have blown them out to be honest. The defense stopped VT on defense nearly every drive up until the 3:30 mark. We held them to 11 total yards in the 3rd quarter I believe. A truly dominate performance along the defensive line for us. The freshmen along the line (Robinson, Ojomo and Forston) played really well. I'll get into them a little later into this post. The Linebackers displayed good pursuit of the ball carrier which often was Tyrod Taylor in this game. Glenn Cook made a few nice run stops and Sean Spence contributed as well. I don't recall seeing much of Daryl Sharpton making plays. I know he ran very well sideline-to-sideline but I don't remember him making a bunch of tackles. Of course, I don't have the statistics in front of me so I don't know who contributed how much in the tackles column. Either way, we did a great job of getting to the Quarterback up until Taylor was moved out of the pocket. When Taylor was moved out of the pocket, the defense wasn't quite sure to attack him or to play underneath coverage IMO. I saw Sean Spence start running toward to Tyrod Taylor and then I saw him take steps back into coverage. I think that because of the players not sure of how to defend the multi-threat QB Taylor, it left the field open for Taylor and that enabled him to gain first downs, etc.

On offense, the pass game wasn't really in rhythm. Other than that 37 yard screen pass, I don't recall much happening. Our biggest play on offense may have been Aldarius Johnson's fumble. Kayne Farquahson picked up the ball and ran for about another five to seven yards if I remember right. On the ground, Cooper made some beautiful cuts and found some open space. I thought he ran hard. He displayed his talent tonight in the second half. Javarris James in the slot a few times tonight. That caught me by surprise. He almost had a downfield touchdown. Didn't see much of Jacory Harris tonight, especially after the hit Macho Harris laid on him. I don't recall seeing him after that hit. I wasn't too happy with Marve. Other than alluding tacklers, I wasn't really happy with what I saw from him. He made a couple nice throws that resulted in drops but other than scrambling around, he didn't do much. I liked that he alluded tacklers but he needs to learn to look up and pass the ball instead of always tucking it and running. There were several times where he went through his first read only and then ran. I hated that.

Thoughts on The Young Canes Players & NFL Draft Prospects

I took notes on the play of players from Virginia Tech's shutdown CB Victor "Macho" Harris to Allen Bailey's two plays that I saw toward the end of the game. Here is my notes.

Sean Spence - LB - I mentioned a couple times a few weeks ago in this thread about the UM coaching staff having concerns with Spence's weight. He's about 205 lbs tops and he may even be losing weight because he's playing so much. They're not working him during the season. They're waiting for that after the season. Tonight, his weight showed. Its still early in his career but he's not effective as a blitzer in his Freshmen year. Several times, he blitzed and was stopped at the POA. He couldn't shed the blockers because he did not have the power. A few times I saw him just throw his body at the blockers. On one play, where he did record a sack, he had a head start. Ran and when the ball was hiked, he used his quickness to get by the Left Guard to sack the QB in the backfield. He doesn't have the proper hand placement so far into his early career. Furthermore, early in the first quarter, I saw him jogging around instead of hustling and going at full speed. I don't know what that was about. Possibly him settling himself slowly into the game. After that first quarter, he ran his behind off. He pursued ball carriers and forced a fumble on a big hit on Evans, the VT Running Back. He showed his high IQ of the game tonight when I saw him calling out plays and pointing out several lineups and formations (I predict he'll be a MLB for us in a year or so). As I said, he's still a true FR that is making plays out there with instincts and intelligence while his body will get built up this off-season.

LaRon Byrd - WR - Not much to say about him to be honest. He was guarded by VT's best DB, Macho Harris, at times and he didn't really do much. He had one downfield throw at him if memory serves me right. At the 7:34 mark in the second quarter I believe, he went for a screen pass and then realized it wasn't for him. He then went down to try and block but it was too late and the block was poor. He showed great hustle upfield to try and throw blocks though. Once the hustle paid off as he recovered a loose fumble.

Daryl Sharpton - LB - Had a big play early where he displayed his sideline-to-sideline quickness. He ran down the ball carrier. He was quiet rest of the night from what I saw.

Marcus Forston - DT - Forston showed off his talents and showed the world why he was one of the top players in the country coming out of High School. Known for his quickness in HS, he showed it once again in the College level. He had a quick first step and then locked up with the LG, then proceeded to disengage and sack the QB. Played a big part in stopping the true FR Running Back of VT.

Marcus Robinson - DE/OLB - Was primarily a 'end in tonights game as he had his hand in the dirt. I don't recall him playing OLB tonight which what he was brought in for. He's 6'1", 242 lbs and made some big plays tonight. He had three sacks tonight (one not counted). He made a key fourth down stop early in the game, on a 4th and 3 I believe. He has a knack for getting to the Quarterback as was obviously displayed tonight. He's in the right place often. He used a bulrush tonight from what I saw and a lot of leaning on the Tackles with all his weight and power. On a specific play, he displayed his strength when he leaned on the Tackle and then shed the blocker really well to get Tyrod Taylor, who was looking to scramble.

Aldarius Johnson - WR - He didn't really have a big game tonight but I thought he ran his routes well tonight. He has a good feel for the game and normally displays good hands as he did throughout HS but tonight he dropped a couple. "Glue Hands" as known throughout HS, he dropped a screen pass and then fumbled on a strip by Macho Harris. Credit goes to Harris on the great play. I thought he should have covered it up though.

Graig Cooper - RB - Cooper showed great cutting ability tonight as he hurdled tacklers on the ground and sidesteped them as well. He displays good peripheral vision and he hits the edges quickly. I'm quite surprised by his quickness around the edge. I've seen him a few times as the Canes are my favorite team and I've never really seen him display the quickness. He doesn't seem to be fast down field either. When I watch him, he doesn't look that fast but runs a late 4.4 forty. He needs to cover up the ball though when running. He got stripped because he was holding it in one hand. Must cover up the ball man.

Chavez Grant - CB - Didn't really catch much of the Canes DB's tonight as I was focused on other things. However, I did catch a play downfield to the Freshmen VT WR. Grant, whose a physical guy, didn't impress me with his ability to speed up after gearing down. He was incredibly slow on it after a stop and go route that was ran. He was beat pretty bad but the WR dropped it.

Bruce Johnson - CB - I've seen this guy in the second round and I still can't wrap my head around that ranking. I realize its still early but I've never liked this guy. He changes directions pretty well at the snap but displays bad leaping ability as it was clear on a deep ball that he was beaten on. He did turn his head around on the play though, which I liked. Sidesteps and looks in the backfield.

Allen Bailey - DE - Bailey is a freak of nature. An incredible athlete that has exactly ZERO percent body fat. 292 pounds of muscle. He's still learning the DE position as he doesn't really have much pass rush moves from what I've seen. He had a pectoral injury earlier this year. He had a big play to sack Tyrod Taylor on fourth down. He used his quickness and strength to get around the RG. The drive before that, he tried to bat down a screen pass from Taylor. He missed it but he hustled down the WR who the ball was directed at and the pass was dropped. I only caught two plays of him so I don't know much time he exactly saw.

Kam Chancellor - S - Coming into this game, I didn't see much of him and tonight, he didn't look bad at all, just a thing I don't like. I thought that he changed directions well and played well, specifically on a deep ball that he displayed great breaking on the ball but missed the interception. On a deep ball, he was covering a slot WR and he changed directions well as mentioned before but the concern I had with him was his top end speed and he was beat bad because he was so slow.

Macho Harris - CB - Didn't really see much his way tonight but I got a look at him. He changed directions well and on a specific play early in the game, he flipped his very hips quickly. He is more of an interference tackler but laid the wood early in the 3rd quarter and may have knocked out our backup QB. He exploded from his feet and launched his body into Jacory Harris. He reads the run well as he made a couple tackles inside the five yard line. He turns left nearly every time and gives you the sideline. Almost never gave the middle of the field. He's an emotional leader that will frequently speak his mind. Some don't like it. He gets off the blockers well (WR's only). Something I've never seen before but I saw him once turn his back to the WR on a screen play. Just walked away from the WR. He also sometimes hops up and down prior to a play or at the snap. I don't know what that's about. I hoped to see him get tested downfield tonight because I question his elite/top end speed but that didn't happen.

My only critique of Patrick Nix and the Miami playcalling was the lack of Javaris James on the goal to go situations.

The guy scored your first and only TD, is your best power back, and Cooper is th guy you hand it to around the goal line in the second half?

I dont think its any surprise the Canes have been a poor Red Zone TD offense while James has been injured. Id give that guy the ball 4 straight times down there...

Furthermore, I understand James is still a bit banged up, but he also showed he is a force in the receving game. He made a couple nice catches over the middle and is dangerous in space.

In the coming weeks, Id like to see his play making skills utilized more. Remember how deadly Willis McGahee was on screens? I think Javaris could be just as effective.

Im a little biased towards the guy because I saw him play for Immokalee HS, which happens to be in the same district as my Alma Mater in Southwest Florida. He was the second best HS running back Ive ever seen. Ironically the best Ive ever seen was his cousin, Edgerin, who went to the same HS.

And thats pretty high praise, considering I saw Earnest Graham and Noel Devine come through there as well.

I agree with you on getting James the ball in the goal situations. However, I don't see the poor red zone offense. I think it said last night that we were fourth in the nation in the red zone with 22 touchdowns and 10 FG's in 34 attempts (94 scoring %).

22 out of 34, given that they have played a few weak schools, is not great. If Miami wants to contend for the ACC championship they cant kick 3 FG's in goal to go situations.

I agree that they can't kick three FG's. We've faced the number 4, 20, 25, 32 and another good defense in Virginia. Those aren't great defenses but I don't think they're bad. I think us being 4th in the country is a great statistic (if it is true). That's only four of ten total games played but I still think that us being ranked high is pretty good. I could be wrong though.

Nix is awful, pathetic and needs to be fired at years end. That said my first home game in 2 years was a great time. 2 more road trips that are going to be a blast. 9-3.

Maryland needs to kick Botch in the nads tomorrow.

I hope they covered up the NFL stuff enough for you to enjoy being at a Miami Hurricanes game, nothing against the Phins of course. Still, having a 'Ring of Honor' banner over the home teams names of accomplishment is kinda weird. But, we do what we have to I guess. Go Canes!:hi5:

That was my 1st game of any type in that stadium. Stadium is nice from a visual standpoint and the Club area was fun. The stadium just looks fake for some reason. I hated the complete enclosure which lends no air flow. We were on the 50 yard line last row of club seats visitor side backed up against the suites so we could do whatever and blocked no ones view. Prices for food and booze was insane. Next time we will be sneaking in some Crown

Definitely flying down for OU (If they ever get a date set, Thanks POS Marlins) and Clemson. For now on tp GT and NCST, 11 days on the road over the Holiday can't wait. Section 201 for the GT game if anyone else is going to be there. Big party at Stats Thursday afternoon.

Right now, its a total crap shoot as to where we could go. The only bowls I would rule out are Peach, Music City and Meineke. Orange (if we win the ACC), or Gator or Champs seem most likely. I prefer the Gator Bowl in Jax as its a major network (NBC) and is on Jan 1st. That is a great showcase for the program.

That was a great performance by the Gators. Great execution on both sides of the ball. Congrats to you guys on the big win.

Great class by Preston Parker there.. Keep being a dick and your draft stock will slide when you come out

The guy comes over to pat Preston Parker on the back as in "good game" and he shoves him. That's pathetic. Hope they lose out completely. :D

If that was me, we'd both be suspended for next week's game.

    I thought we had to win the last two games to clinch. I didn't know we could clinch this week;

    Va Tech (6-4, 3-3) hosts Duke (4-6, 1-5).
    Virginia (5-5, 3-3) hosts Clemson (5-5, 3-4).
    North Carolina (7-3, 3-3) hosts N.C. State (4-6, 2-4).

If I was a betting man I'd bet on Va Tech & Virginia winning this week, although that is completely out of our control. If we grab this game on Thursday, then man, I feel pretty good about our chances. I'm not too much of a tie-breaker numbers type of guy but,

    Can it work this way:

Miami loses, Virginia Tech and Virginia win, then Miami beats NC State

    OR

Miami loses, North Carolina loses, then Miami beats NC State.

Miami is #23 in the BCS standings. UNC is #22 with MD at #25.

How in the world do the coaches rank BC above Miami? Northwestern #24? Really?

Sure, North Carolina beat us in Miami. However, we're in the same conference and Miami is ahead in the conference standings. We should be ahead of them in the BCS polls because of that alone. I also don't understand how the hell North Carolina is ahead of Maryland, as if last Saturday never happened.

I don't understand the point system though, nor do I care to. It's stupid. I'm just happy we finally made it.
