Well the Playstation Blog has just announced that the closed beta will be expanded at the end of this month and they have an easy way for you to get in (an easy process not a guaranteed spot that is).

All you have to do is today (August 7) the Playstation Store will be updating as usual and there will be a Playstation Home Theme that you can download. By downloading this theme you are putting in your application for the closed Beta. Its that simple, but the only catch is that the invites will go out to those with the most PSN usage (so the more you use PSN the better your chances).

This all seems to be telling me that Home will probably launch on the desired date this time. This coupled with the fact that Sony has sent a media version of Home to be reviewed also supports this claim and I see the open beta coming out this fall as promised. It looks like the long wait is finally coming to a close.

    Here is the article's link:

So I played with home for about an hour and a half. No connection issues (can't believe it). It's a little slow and laggy, but it's in BETA, what do you want?

It's cool looking, and very light weight (initially). If you've ever played Guild Wars and downloaded the client online, it works like that. You download areas as you go there. It does dedicate 3.5GB of disk space for future HOME downloads, but it doesn't download that initially. The interface is ok. and it seems to work... All in all, it's pretty cool.

    Here's my issue with it...

It's pointless. In theory, it was a great idea. Think about it, a virtual world that you and your friends can patrol around in and see stuff. The problem is, games need a point. You have to do something to overcome something to accomplish something. Then there's some sort of reward. There is absolutely no point to this thing. I was the biggest supporter of this.... It's one of the main reasons I got a PS3. Now I just think that it's a whole lot of development and time going into something that would have probably ran better and been more to the point if it were an Xbox Live like menu driven interface. Again, it's cool... But the thought of launching this thing, walking around, going to a building loading between all of this stuff... just to watch a trailer or play a few levels of an arcade game? Or to launch a game with friends? It's completely pointless. Very creative, and very ambitious though...

To me it feels like one of those overly ambitious dreams that Sony bought into early on. And before they realized what I did when I played it... They'd already promised it to the world. You can travel the world by using the menu in your palm device (in game)... But if you're just gonna move around via menus because it's faster, why even have a 3D world?

Here's some things I think they can do to make it more appealing:

    - Add some sort of XP leveling system
    - Make stuff to do (just guessing, crafting, sales)
    - Jobs of some sort
    - Find something beside a 3D media outlet - imo it's not working

    Great writeup Mor.

Since you are technically are a Beta tester is there a way you can send those ideas to Sony?

I thought the whole thing was kinda neat. When you get close to people you can hear them actually having conversations. Its strange and yet interesting.

It has potential out the wazoo and I could see some people getting really addicted to this.

It does say on "the message of the day" that some of the store items and game areas were taken off but will be back.

i got in this 2 nights ago...and it's pretty fun

one thing that really annoys me is that lack of bowling lanes and video games as they fill up fast.

but anyways i was wanting to play the Ice Breaker game because you can unlock clothing items and 2 badass wigger sounding guys totally cussed me out with their mics and were bullying me so they could control the arcade game...

it made me LOL literally just reminded me of like...bullies at the old school arcade and they were bogarting the game.

i didn't have my mic handy so i did everything i could to antagonize and grief them as i thought they were hilarious...they were going around the arcade cussing at kids and any girls they saw (most likely fat kids that want to make a female character)

as far as bowling goes? i actually think it's pretty fun...i think my highest is like 150 or so...i think the key word with home is "potential" and i agree with mor's points as well about adding some sort of goals/leveling/something...

i never got to try bowling... The lanes are ridiculously full all the time. They definitely need to find a way to offer more than 6 lanes across a few million (potentially) HOME users.

I got an extra code for the beta, if anyone wants it, let me know.

    Edit: Gone!

There are other ways (it involves creating a new account and get it from my download history) of getting in the beta if anyone wants to try it out, let me know.

Glad to hear that they have a timeframe for the open beta to start since I never got in. Hopefully it doesn't get delayed again.

I doubt Home is something I will use very often but it does seem interesting. Kinda like a social networking service done up in MMO style.
