It is not surprising by what happened today. Cassell has been playing well and we have problems with teams that have great receiver corps. We really need to revamp our secondary and much of the LB corps. I am OK with our DL though we do need a backup for Fergie....

The bad part IMO is that I just dont see how a front office can address all the areas of need we have in one off-season. On the positive side I have full confidence that our front office "is" going to make progress. Combine that with the progress that the rookies are going to make from season one to season two and I think we are on the right track.

lastly, I am concerned that our record has a lot to do with the teams we have been playing. Is our record due to progess in the organization or the fact that we are playing a pretty easy schedule? me thinks it is a lot of both....

No team is a "team we should beat". It's the NFL and talent is high across the board.

The FO can't make all the moves in one off season. We have made some. Last year we addressed the lines. This year we may address some of that (RG, NT), but I think we'll see LBers, DBs.

Cassel isn't a joke QB. He could start for a few teams. We do seem to have problems with receiving corps and that isn't always the DBs fault. If we can't put pressure (usually the front seven) then the DBs are going to suffer.. and vicey versey.

I agree that you cant make all the moves in one off-season. The problem we are facing this up coming off season is that we really need to bring in at least two CB's, a FS, two inside LBers, an OLB and a NT on defense. On offense we have to readdress the RT, RG and center positions (our interior line sucks and I dont think Carey is coming back). That is a total of 10 players! I think two or three of those guys come via FA but the rest are going to be rookies (IMO), which means more growing pains.

we played the hardest part of our schedule. denver, new england, san diego, buffalo are all good teams, that we beat when they were winning and were heavy favorites. you cant expect to sweep the Pats, especially when they had 11 days to prep for us. there's plenty of season left, and we're still having a great year considering.

SS is a stop gap player, he got manhandled today by Wilfork. Having said that, I am sure some of his struggles come from the fact that we have a huge whole at RG. While "I" think he needs to be replaced, I think we can afford to let him stay there one more year. The other thing is that we are going to be getting the kid from UConn back.

We are still going to have to address RT at the minimum and we need to add depth.

we have yet to see the guy we drafted for RG play, really. give him a chance.

i think we'll draft in waves. ie. like we drafted mostly lines. we'll probably address it like LBers or DBs as a whole. not scattered all over. with that being said they draft by position need and not by BPA.

yeah, Donald Thomas will sure help.

But in Sateles defense, Wilfork can manhandle most centers in the league. Still not an excuse.

I got poop-pooped for bringing this up a couple weeks ago. The NFL should never schedule division games giving one team more time to prepare then the other.

I fully expect the Fins to take two OT's especially if Carey leaves.

Cassell is OK but I have a feeling he will suck when he's not on a team where he can play his little dink and dunk game and just throw the ball up to Randy Moss.

New England's 48-28 triumph over Miami

A collection of quotes from the Patriots' locker room following New England's 48-28 triumph over Miami, as transcribed by the Patriots' media relations staff:

    RB Kevin Faulk

(Comments on the game) “Two teams fighting to win a football game and luckily it came out our way.”

(Did you expect to score 48 points?) “Whatever is working is what you want to keep going at it to just win the game. They had some things that were working too. A couple of plays went our way and a couple of things went their way.”

(About Matt Cassel) “What I know is that Matt is doing whatever he has to do to help this team win. If that means he has to play better, he plays better. All we want to do is keep winning games. He’s just doing enough for us to win the game, and probably even more. As a team we’re just trying to win the next game.”

(About the emotional intensity out there) “It was a division game and it’s always going to be emotional. It was one of those games that both teams had to have and we just made a little more plays than they did.”

Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel's postgame press conference following New England's 48-28 triumph over Miami, as transcribed by the Patriots' media relations staff:

(On having two consecutive 400 yard passing games)- “I’m happy about it, there’s no doubt. I’m just happy about the fact that we were able to win and put together a great outing today and continue to move forward offensively. I think the production is starting to come around, and that’s a good thing for us.”

(On his comfort level)- “Everybody has to work together. You know, the receiver has got to run good routes. The offense line has to block, running backs have to do their job. And when it all works together and works right, it’s easy for me.”

Patriots coach Bill Belichick's postgame press conference following New England's 48-28 triumph over Miami, as transcribed by the Patriots' media relations staff:

“It’s nice to come down to Florida and win; you know this hasn’t been a great venue for us through the years. It’s good to come out on top, a lot of player stepped up, and played hard today. Miami’s a good football team and we definitely had our hands full. Offensively, we had a lot of good production, but we had some penalties and a couple miscues, but I thought those guys really stayed after it and moved the ball effectively. Defensively, we were just trying to hang in there. They’re a good team, you know we evened it up with Miami this year; they got us pretty good up there, so we feel good about evening the score down here. We’re happy to win, and ready to move on next week to Pittsburgh.”

(On the importance of bouncing back from a loss) – “Every game’s important. It’s good to win a division game here against Miami, like I said they got us up there the first time, and at least we were able to square it up with them, and we’ll be in it right to the very end.”

    Randy Moss on 1-on-1 coverage
Link|Comments (8) Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 23, 2008 05:40 PM

MIAMI -- Patriots WR Randy Moss held a postgame press conference and was asked about being played man-to-man single coverage at times during the game.

“I don’t know why coach disrespected me like that," he said. "I’m who I am and I love to do what I do. Anytime I feel disrespected I want to go out there and make it happen. I think they disrespected me today by playing the single coverage and letting me do what I love to do, which is getting in the end zone.”

Dolphins DB Jason Allen often drew the assignment against Moss.

“I don’t really care who it is. I think if I see single coverage man to man I feel I can beat anybody in this league on any given day," Moss said. "I think today was just one of those days where it was something I hadn’t seen in a while. I always preach every time I see single coverage that most of the time the safety is over the top so it really looks like single, but it’s double. Double Moss. But today was single coverage. The safety stayed in the middle and the offense executed.

"I think we really came to play today. At times we spread it. We still have a lot to work on and this will be a hell of a week, getting ready to play Pittsburgh. They’re playing pretty good ball. Hopefully we’re up to the challenge."

Moss also commented on QB Matt Cassel.

"I think Matt is getting in a comfort zone and at the same time he’s getting in his we’re getting in ours. What I mean by that he has to not just feel out his receivers and running backs, but the offensive line out, too. I think the other team is getting a feel for how Matt is playing -- he’s playing some hellified ball -- and stepping up and we’re behind him.”

Miami is a good football team. We definitely had our hands full. Offensively, we had a lot of good production, other than when we had some penalties and a couple miscues. For anyone to say they were not surprised by today's loss is only kidding themselves.

The Patriots threw on nearly every down and our defense could not stop them.

That's all the Patriots do is throw.

We could make no adjustments to slow them down or stop them, how can we allow something like this to happen on our own field..........?

I just didn't see any urgency from us, and that goes to the Coaches....

Ridiculous statement, sorry. A few people predicted we'd lose the game, me included. How can we be surprised at it if we thought it would happen?

Not true...I felt that NE had more need of this game than we did...If they lose to us twice, they're out of the running barring a complete letdown by Miami and the Jests...I even said that we'd either win a close one with a drive late in the 4th, or they'd blow us out...if they got up a little, it would be all over for this team....

What the pastsies did was look real hard at the Cards game and have them play their physical receivers just like the Cards did...the difference was that our O was a little better today than against the Cards...

The bottom line is that the pasties have more talent than we do pretty much across the board...it's that simple...when the coaching is a good as BB is and the talent is better, you won't win against them in a rematch...

As bad as our outing was, it wasn't a complete bashing...the offense scored some points...the D held at times...but the talent level, particularly in the secondary just isn't NFL caliber...And the front 7 didn't apply any pressure today...

And, as I said before, we can still be in things given our schedule...we HAVE to beat the teams we're supposed to beat and in particular the jills in a couple of weeks...

Donald Thomas may by a great OLineman, but you guys sound as if he is going to be a Pro Bowler/HOF'er already.....we cannot assess his worth based on pre-season games and what was it, part of 1 game (did he get hurt in the Jets game ?). Sure he beat our Shawn Murphy, but what does that tell you about how bad or good Shawn Murphy is, and if that was such a great feat ?

A couple of things I would like to address here.......

Point one is that Randy is stretching the truth. The fact is that the Miami Dolphins defensive staff gave him his respect for the entirety of the first half. They gave him so much respect that one of the few times that the ball was thrown to him in the first half, the double coverage got a turnover. All of the attention paid to Moss in the first half didn't slow the Patriots as the other receivers were killing us.

This is an act of subversion. As a matter of fact the staff did make adjustments at the half. If you had watched the game (and actually knew what you were watching) you would have seen the adjustments. Statistics (and all the love from various sportscasters) show Matt Cassel spreading the ball around, slicing and dicing the Dolphins secondary for the entire game. The fact is that he threw everything based upon the coverage dictated by Randy Moss.

    Here are the facts:

Of the four times Randy Moss was thrown at in the first half, he caught two and we caught one with the double coverage. At the half, the issue with our defensive plan wasn't that Randy Moss was killing us. It was that the rest of the Patriots were killing the rest of our coverage unit. At the half, we were losing 17-14.

So we are losing at the half. We have to do something to help the rest of the coverage unit. We've been successful at containing Moss but we are still losing. Here is your adjustment that you craved. In the second half, we took the double coverage off Moss for a larger percentage of the game. While Moss was doubled in the first half for 80% of the game, he was only doubled 50% of the second half. The result was that Cassel threw to Moss eight times in the second half.

So you are looking for some sort of failure. You seek to place some blame on the coaching staff for the Patriots passing game. Okay, I'll roll with you on that one........

We doubled Moss for 80% of the first half and we lost to the other receivers 17-14.

We reduced the double team on Moss by 30% and Matt Cassel doubled the amount of times that he threw to Moss. Moss tripled his total output. We lost the second half 27-14.

With all of that said I can now say this.... Your desire for adjustments sucked. The original game plan slowed the Patriots attack and that left the game at a competitive 17-14. The second half of the game showed that we should have had more patience with the game plan. Sure the first half was horrible to watch but it was the best plan available. So if you want to kill the coaching staff kill them with the correct instrument. Kill them for adjusting to prevent a 34-28 loss because that is exactly where the first half was leading. Me, I'd rather we just stuck with the game plan. At least we would have made it a game for the entirety.

Well if Satele is a stopgap, what a disaster that Welker trade turned out to be, in addition to Candy's (Cam/Ram) only draft.

I keep hearing Satele get bashed because he can't handle a massive NT like Wilfork or Jenkins 1-on-1. Are you serious? If that's how you feel, then goodluck finding a replacement for him because there isn't a single Center in the league that could handle those guys by themselves.

I don't pretend to know what philosophy that this regime intends to bring along the O-Line, and maybe Satele simply isn't big enough to fit into that mold, but don't knock the guy for not being able to handle Wilfork 1-on-1. If that's what he was asked to do today, it would be a failure on the part of the coaching staff more than anyone.

Okay so you are saying bring 5 on every other down. You are saying take the double team off of Randy Moss on every other down. I just told you that we did that in the second half. How did that work out for us?

Again, we did this in the second half. It didn't work. They went to Randy Moss in single coverage. Now what?

Well the refs missed that offensive pass interference call on Moss when he pushed off on that TD, and if you watch him close, he always seems to push off when making a break or going for high jump ball.

You ask now what....? Well you execute it.

All you can hope for is to have a running game and keep the Patriots offense off the field, its that simple. Any QB in the NFL can run a spread offense with the quality receivers such as what the patriots have and run up the score. What the Patriots did was rub this loss in our faces.....

Our defense played on its heels practically all game...

They injured 2 of our players and destroyed us at home....

They beat us by 13 and then tacked a late score on us. They did not injure our two players. Long rolled his ankle and Camarillo was injured on an interception return without any malice intended.

Stop making it sound like we were raped to death or something. Negativity is one thing, distorting the facts and making it sound like we were beat 48-10 is another.

I saw your posts before the game. You said we'd destroy New England. Now you've obviously gone to the extreme.

What did that have to do with anything we were discussing? :shifty:

If that is the case, why would you say that the staff could not make adjustments to stop what they were doing? Why not just admit to yourself that we didn't have the talent available to execute the assignments and then say as much. Why attempt to link something to being wrong other than a talent disparity?

Well thank you for that synopsis. :jt0323:
