    Three observations.

Wii = Gaming God in systems moved.

360 = finally found the right price range and is leaving the PS3 in the dust.

PS3 = The death bells are ringing...well as far as having a chance at not being third this generation.

Wow, I almost feel bad for Sony. I wonder how much money they are going to end up loosing on that console?

To be fair, this is just american sales (sony does lead the 360 in japan for example). I think them having blu-ray continue to gain ground on dvd is more important.

    A couple quick notes.

Wii broke the highest sales ever for a console during November.
    PlayStation 2 (2002) - 1.30M
    Wii (2008) - 2.04M

    December and all-time record is...
    PlayStation 2 (2002) - 2.70M
    Wii (2008) - stay tuned

PlayStation 3's year over year sales actually dropped from last year.
    November 2007 - 466K
    November 2008 - 378K

and this was that year everyone's been saying, "Wait for MGS4, wait for Home, wait for Resistance 2, wait for Little Big Planet"...

I'll say it. The Blu-ray killed the PS3. Blu-ray made the price point too high to appeal to the core gamer crowd. On that note, in the long run Blu-ray will make Sony tons of money as a medium. But Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Electronics are two separate entities and two separate fiscal units.

And strangely enough, Blu-ray is why most people use their PS3.

Its simple for Sony the system costs too much especially without backwards compatibility. Yes I know that over time the 360 with its Live fees costs more than the PS3 but the average buyer and especially parents look at the base price and buy on that.

However Stitches is right in Japan the PS3 is beating the 360 and I am pretty sure that is the case in Europe as well. So for the system overall its not doing that bad but here in the US it is just dreadful and no where near where Sony hoped it would be. Because of the US failures Sony has to view the PS3 as somewhat of a failure and they don't even seem to care about loosing a major market.

Mor I disagree with your Blu-Ray comment though. I still think people use it as a gaming console far more than they do a Blu-Ray player. However no doubt Sony made the PS3 to big and complicated for a wow factor and it blew up in their face.

Think about it... Instead of trying to force feed Blu-ray onto the world and attempting to be the PS2 again, they could have gone DVD, still had all of the same free online features, and all of the exclusives it has now... With $199 - $250 price point.

If they launched a DVD based PS3 at $200, dont you think it's outsell... well, everything?

The one thing lost in all this is the Xbox 360 doing 836K. That's really good and is being overshadowed by the Wii's complete dominance and PS3's dismal failure. The $199 price point is working.

The PS3 has cost the Japanese electronics giant $3.3 billion since its launch in late 2006 because of "strategic pricing" under which it sells the console at a loss...

    Forbes

The "wait for _____" was popular among GameCube owners last generation. It ended up in 3rd place too.

Also, Sony's arrogance is what led to them to include Blu-ray into their console in the first place even though they knew it drove up the price to FIVE HUNDRED NINETY NINE U.S. DOLLARS.

I remember the quotes by various Sony executives basically assuming PlayStation 3 would roll over the competition just like the last two generations no matter what.

Yes I agree with you on Blu-Ray being too much, I disagreed with it being the only reason people still use their PS3.

Plain and simple Sony got cocky and it came back to bite them.

I'd have bought a ps3 by now if they didn't lose all of their exclusives. thats one thing people don't talk about. Last generation, the ps2 had exclusives on GTA, devil May cry, final fantasy, tekken, and theres rumblings they may lose kingdoms hearts as well. and the ONE exclusive Sony managed to snag from Microsoft, Bioshock, didn't sell well on the ps3.

I mean, those are HUGE games and I'm sure im missing a few. I was considering buying the ps3 for Final Fantasy XIII alone until Microsoft took care of that. Microsoft may not be able to beat Nintendo at their own game but they've certainly got Sony backed in a corner this generation.

Blu-ray though, i simply couldn't careless. Too much for the player, too much for the discs, and no matter what, i can't shake that feeling the Sonys just trying to sell me the future rather then it actually being the future.

ok, point taken. Just because I mostly only use it for movies doesn't mean everyone does... But I can't count (nor will I try to find) how many times folks on this board uttered the same words, "I mostly use it to watch blu-ray movies"

The other thing that has to be bad news for Sony is that the PS3 is no longer a good value as a blue ray player. It used to be just about the best player on the market and with stand alone players being almost as much as the console a lot of people that just wanted a blue ray player bought a PS3.

Not any more. Over the last month there have been quite a few sales on good quality name brand blue ray player in the $150 range.... And those prices will continue to drop as the year flips over and older models are replaced by their 2009 counterparts.

I would REALLY like to see the world sales numbers though to compare the PS3 and the 360.

Hard to get accurate world sales numbers since European numbers are very hard to come by but U.S. and Japan numbers are given out every month and every week, respectively. Here's U.S. + Japan combined sales numbers.

Seeing as how Super Smash Bros. Melee was the GameCube's best selling game, pointing out when its sequel was released does matter a bit.

Didn't cause much of a spike in console sales though.

It is. Well, one game actually.

I'm just saying, Blu-ray causes a lot of the issues people complain about

    - Having to install
    - Long load times
    - Expensive

And let's be honest... There's no game this generation that NEEDS to be on Blu-Ray. Sure, it's nice... But it comes back down to them trying to force feed consumers into it. Look at all of the games that were on both platforms and somehow ended up being a whopping 16GB on Blu-ray and 5.8GB on a dual layered DVD (DVD9). Uncompressed audio and video files. They would have been tied with (at least maybe in the lead) the 360 had they gone DVD.
