Better in some ways actually. They were profile 2.0 players that bitstreemed all codecs instead of having to decode dolby true hd and dts ma at the player like the PS3. Blue Ray.
Aside from the expensive part (which 360 games are the same price), I don't complain about the other issues, but I agree entirely with your subsequent paragraph.
I thought it was wierd because it doesn't really matter what game comes. People are going to buy the wii up like its going out of style. I think its lame to put Wii Sports in a list of top selling games. It comes with the system.
I bet if 360 included hexic hd with every controller that it would top software sales continually like wii play does.
I don't care what the numbers say. I will continue to support the company that treats me the best and right now that's Sony. They don't charge me for online play, wireless connectivity, and their launch models had HDMI ports. There are still some exclusive 360 games I'll buy but that's about it. Without HDMI, games on 360 look like garbage compared to the PS3. And I'm not about to buy a new model.
Thats what I feel about sony. I love my PS3, laptop, digital camera, etc. Plus since I work for a retailer I am part of their retailer loyality program. They treat us VERY well.
I think you misread what I said, these were profile 2 players with Ethernet ports that would accept later firmware updates, same as the PS3. Where they were superior to the PS3 is that they could bitstream whereas the PS3 cannot. For DTS MA and Dolby True HD the PS3 has to decode the audio at the PS3 and then downmix it to multi channel PCM to send to the reciever where that is decoded and then sent to the speakers. You end up with audio that is better then the normal dolby digital but it is not Dolby True HD or DTS MA. The only way to actually get that audio is by having a player that can bitstream the audio code directly to the receiver without ever touching it, which due to the chip Sony chose to use it cant and never will be able to do, even with more firmware updates. Its just not physically possible with that chip. Which is sad, I would have probably bought one if not for that.
I dont agree. My 360 has HDMI but I cant tell any great difference in image quality between using component cables and HDMI. I had to go back to component because my HDMI port was damaged.
Kojima would disagree. Then I expect Viva Pinata: Party Animals to be in next month's top 10 software chart. Also, for the curious... 141K LittleBigPlanet - PS3 33K Valkyria Chronicles - PS3
This is what I don;t get. Even the people who have Ps3s aren't interested in the ps3s game. I want this game and I feel its sadly being wasted on the ps3. I swear everyone who has a ps3 only got it for the promise of home and god of war 3. (and blu ray, but that's been beaten to death)
Sony has admitted not marketing the game right. They say they will for Christmas and the Holidays but has anyone seen a LBP commercial aside from the cheesy PS3 commercials its own? Honestly on another board I post on people didn't even know what the game was about. That is where Sony is failing this generation they just aren't marketing games and don't seem to care. For example take Halo 3. MS had Mountain Dew with Halo on it, a 7/11 deal with slurpees, etc. The only thing Sony tried to hype was MGS4 and no where near the Halo 3 scale that MS set.
Well I agree they are marketing it wrong. but ultimately its just not a game that the average ps3 owner wants to play. my roommate, who is an avid sony fan, laughed at littlebigplanet when i showed it to him. He said "that looks like it belongs on the wii." I realize he doesn't represent the majority but the ps3 is about pushing technology, and from the untrained eye, littlebigplanet doesn't seem like it does that. There are no explosions or amazing death scenes or bullets flying, and thus it's 'boring' to most gamers. (though Sony shouldn't feel bad, Banjoe and Kazooie is dealing with the same problem)
It only seems strange because you're wrong. What hurts the PS3 is losing all of its good exclusives and taking longer to release their stuff due to more difficult development. When it comes down to it you have to get the best games out there fast and steadily, which has been made evident by the fact that people have continuosly and consistently bought an unreliable, shoddily made console [Xbox 360]. And I know they've started making them better but that doesn't change how many pieces of crap they put on the shelf for sale. And people come back and ask for seconds. The games are what matters and Sony did not get out the gate fast enough and get those games coming. Sony got cocky and they are paying for it right now. Playstation is a powerful brand though and people will not forget it. They will be back with a vengeance just like Nintendo. They are going to have to learn from the mistakes of this generation. That's not saying though that they will abandon the PS3, I don't believe that will happen. They'll sell enough to stay afloat. Price isn't the reason either, that's a myth. There isn't even that big of a price gap between the two. It doesn't even make sense that all these people would buy an Xbox and a ton of games but yet they couldn't afford to pony up maybe 100 dollars more for a PS3. You're talking like the "core gamer" crowd are all poor people and they're getting some kind of bargain with the 360. I don't buy it. They're still spending hundreds. Core gamers buy what console they want, period. They'll find the money. Blu-ray is a scapegoat and so is the price.
I think price has a lot to do with the PS3's woes and I agree with Mor about Blu-Ray also being a problem but mainly because it drove up the price. Especially now with the economy circling the drain people are definitely not going to be dropping $400 on a console w/o tax. A $200 Xbox 360 will look a lot more attractive.
Not really you could probably get a cheap 20GB 360 hard drive now for like $20 or just get the casing and pop in your own hard drive.
More chart stuff... Top 11-20 * No Sales Numbers * Animal Crossing: City Folk - Wii * Fallout 3 - 360 * Rock Band - Wii * Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia - DS * Guitar Hero: World Tour - 360 * Mario Kart DS - DS * Guitar Hero: World Tour - PS2 * WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 - PS2 184K Fable II - 360 * Madden NFL 09 - 360
Thats me I have no clue what the game is about, and from the comercials you can't tell. From what I have heard it is suppose to be the best thing sence sliced bread, but if I don't know what the game is about I am not going to buy it just to try it. I would think that if Sonny dropped the ps2 or atleast made the ps2 games playable on the ps3 you would see an increase in ps3 sales. JMHO
ahhh but that's the thing, their still making money off the ps2. The system sold 200K units last month. That's nothing to scoff at for a system approaching ten years on the market. See, they make a profit on every ps2 sold, and they take a loss on every ps3 sold. From a business standpoint, it's a pretty unique situation. ESPECIALLY with Persona 4 coming out on the Ps2. Here's a cult classic RPG that some consider the best rpgs ever made, and it just came out on the Ps2 last week. Not the ps3, the ps2. Check it out, one of the Ps2s greatest games came out last week, and this system was supposed to die last year. The fact that the Ps2 can still move 200k but the ps3s only moving 300K here in the states is probably driving Sony execs absolutely bonkers.
We're not talking about soccer moms picking out consoles here, most of these people choosing either Xbox or PS3 are at least somewhat serious gamers and I cannot believe that they are picking Xbox because it's cheaper. I've met plenty of people who are into video games and they WILL buy the console they want. An extra hundred won't stop them. They might like the fact that it's cheaper but with all other things being equal and the price flip flopped, Xbox would still likely be winning. It had a year head start for crying out loud. Sony is taking forever and a day to release what few quality exclusives they have had. Where in the hell is God of War 3? Or Home? These are the reasons, not price. It's the games. [And probably Xbox live to a lesser extent, they kind of go together] That's it. That's the reason. Period. End of story.
PS2 = best console ever. It's not even close. Not only did it have all the greatest games, it was a quality product. I took mine to Iraq for a year, that was three years ago. I've had it for about 8 now, it still works just fine. No red rings of death, nothing. The game library is amazing. It may never be touched.
No I must say that is not the end of the story. Its simple if you asked Sony they would say their target range is it would be everyone not just the serious gamer. That was why the PS2 was so successful, when it came to Christmas what did all the moms and dads here about...well it was the PS2. Then the parents looked and saw wow the PS2 was affordable (especially with a better economy). Now all the kids want a Wii but even if they did say a PS3 the parent would look at the price of $400 and say "hey how about one of those Wiis they look fun." The Wii appeals to kids and casual gamers and so it sells plus its cheap. The PS3 has nothing going for it price wise and not enough big games to get the casual crowd to buy the system. If the price was dropped to $200 the systems would start posting huge numbers. Just look at the 360s sales numbers since the price drops. Plus also remember the serious gaming crowd is small and probably already have their systems, its all about the casual crowd and the PS3 costs too much.
Your also forgetting that the Wii has Mario. When parents shop for their kids they want to ge tthe happy and friendly system. On xbox they see Halo and think, "no, too violent." The same with the Ps3 and Metal gear, Resistance, etc. But Mario, he's timeless. He's on the cover of almost every game it seems, most parents have probably even played a mario game, and so when they go shopping they think "hey, Marios fun" In some ways thats one big failure on Sonys part. Starting from the Ps1 to the ps2 to now, they never established a mascot for the company. Microsoft has the Master Chief, Nintendo has Mario (and about 5 others really), but Sony never had that character. Unless you count Kratos, but its easy to see why he lacks mass appeal.
5.1 LPCM on hdmi is exactly the same as the 5.1 bitstreamed over optical. Only difference is you don't get that light on your receiver to come on. It either gets decoded at the AVR or at the PS3, the sound is the same.
Very true but some would say Spyro or Crash Bandicoot from the PS1 days were mascots but I agree they were no where near Mario level. With Master Chief I disagree I think Solid Snake is just as big of a mascot for PS because neither are really mascots. Add to that the PS2 had mascot games like the GTA and Metal Gear Solid series. I agree with you that mascots are big because the old Genesis and SNES was nothing but a big mascot war basically.
Crash was definitely their mascot at one point, and then it all just kind of fizzled. I guess cause Crash got stale around #3. Used to love those games though back then.
That game is awesome. I wonder how much they need to sell to make a profit. Anyone who has a ps3 and likes strategy games should be whipped for not buying this game.
According to Japan's Media Create weekly chart... 77K Week 1 24K Week 2 ...and fell out of the Top 10 after that.
It sold old over 130K world wide by those three charts. I do not know how much it needs to sell, if memory serves me right Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil and Bloodrayne 2(personal favorite, fun game) did not sell more than 50k world wide. Plus they have downloadable content which is another campaign all together. I am sure a lot of the people who bought that game will get that. HOpefully they made a profit. They deserve it.
Games, timing and price point mean everything. Always have and always will. Sony failed on all 3 fronts. So go on about the Blu-Ray player etc but technological advancement has never led the way for a console. Heck just look at the original Xbox for that one. Hardware wise it was better in every way. It didn't matter because it was behind the PS2, couldn't match em on price and didn't have the games.
