As my column suggests, I'm truly on the fence regarding Rex Hadnot: http://www.realfootball365.com/nfl/articles/20907.html He's a gritty veteran that has the respect of his fellow linemates, but at the same time, I'm fairly sure that he's just a marginal talent. Should he be a part of the offensive blueprint moving forward into the Parcells era?
Ack, sorry Hugo - I thought we were talking Shelton for a second there and I picked the wrong option. I like Hadnot at guard, and I think he can certainly be a part of the line. He's fairly cheap as well. The only issues on the OL I see are RT and LG at this point, and Hadnot's play this year certainly earned him a contract in my opinion. However, I'm not the HC, and it may well be decided that the line has to have more new blood in it than the spots I mentioned earlier.
I think we should try our hardest to keep Hadnot. IMO, we have three holes filled on the O-line (Vernon Carey, LT or RT. Samson Satele, C. Rex Hadnot, RG). I say we try to keep those holes filled so we can focus on the other holes during the draft.
Re-signing Hadnot might be a worth while move IF...we can get the right price. It would save us from spending a high choice on RG, since we have a hole at LG. I was suprised he graded out like he did. I thought I remembered more penalty's on him. I know he seemed to me to get beaten more than Hugo's article. Good article Hugo, both on Satele, and Rex.
We've spent a lot of time filling holes that were only holes because we let the previous starter go because "he wanted too much money" and "didn't represent value for the 'phins". If we had a young up and coming lineman who was healthy to replace him then fine let him walk, but since that isn't the case let's keep him.
Good points all! It's definitely going to come down to money and young talent that could fill the void. That being the case, I have to believe that Hadnot will be back for at least the '08 season.
Nice work. I had been on the fence with Hadnot as well. But in 2008 and beyond, I've decided (for myself only, obviously) that I've had enough of waiting years for marginal talents to develop...too much heartbreak, and it inevitably clouds your judgment so that by year four you don't even know what the hell to think. Enough. No more players who show flashes of competence - or even brilliance - while otherwise performing at mediocre-to-adequate level most of the time. Cases in point: Chris Chambers; Wade Smith; Morlon Greenwood; Derrick Pope; Derek Hagan...the list is long and sad. There are far, far too many players out there to be had; in the draft, if you're a management team that knows your schemes and picks to the prototypes, unlike our past administrations - and in free agency, if you use good judgment and don't sign asshats like Joey Porter to ball-and-chain contracts which haunt you for years. Don't believe me? Just look north to Belichik and Pioli's New England Patriots. Their roster is largely made up oif players who - while not spectacular talents, or even guys who are brilliant in one aspect of their game but fall short in others - are CONSISTENT and SOLID. No more Chris Chambers'; let him go catch balls with his chest pads and play his chicken****, alligator-armed game somewhere else. Good riddance. No more Travis Minor's; despite his excellence on special teams, he took up a roster spot at a position where he didn't fit - a position far better served by guys like Chatman, Cobbs, and even Gado. Until the NFL gives teams a couple or three extra roster spots for special teamers, Minor is a luxury that a bad team could never afford. And by all means, no more Rex Hadnots, who despite playing beside the Center, are flagged for the stupidest penalties at the most inopportune times. Begone, all of them. Let them go make another team less than it could be. As for the Dolphins in 2008 and beyond, it's time to build on a solid foundation, not one of "what if's" and "maybe one day's".
Chris Chambers and Morlon Greenwood are both playing at very high levels with their new teams. NaboCane- face facts. Chambers is a tremendous talent who didn't let you down as much as his coaches and QB's let him down [mod] Lets not get personal and stay on the topic please[/mod] Chambers NEVER had consistent QB play except for a brief period when Gus Frerotte was able to feed him the ball the way all top notch receivers are. He is thriving in SD with a QB who isn't even close to playing his best. Gates and the talent around him are helping but Chambers is a very good receiver who would have been great had Wanny/Saban or Sham provided him with any surrounding talent or a QB
What!? Chambers is performign at a very high level in SD? Ooook... He isnt playing any better there than he was here. In 6 games here he had 415 yards and averaged 70 yards/game In 10 games in SD he has 555 yards and averages 55 yards per game He isnt doing anything better there than he was here and you can actually make the point that he was more productive here in 07 than he is there...The only difference is he has 4 TD's in SD and 0 here. 4 TD's in a season hardly constitutes a high level of play. And to add insult to injury, he has a much better QB and overall team in SD than he did here.
I disagree using your example of the Patriots as my argument. Many of those Patriots you are mentioning are ex Dolphin players. ( At least 6) If they were still playing for us at the same level they are for the Pats we would not have so many holes to fill. Most of our current problems come from the coaching department not the players side. We have had too many coaching changes in too short a period of time with coaches who could not or would not put in the time to do it right.
preach on brotha! Wna know the worst part? With an exrra 1 mill a yr we could have had steve hutch insteaf of hadnot for his askin price
No, you can not make the point that CC was more productive here. That's ridiculous. Please, he's their number one WR and 4 TD's vs 0 scores is a huge difference. San Diego had no proven or productive wideouts until CC got there. What's their record since he got there- 9-1, 8-2??? Do the math. Hanging on to this silly idea that he's a nothing player is either sour grapes or delusional, take your pick. I've seen him play in 4 of their games including the very productive game he had two days ago and you can't tell me he hasn't made them a much better offense and team despite the fact that Rivers still isn't playing at a consistently high level right now.
I wouldn't pay him Derrick Dockery money but I'd try to keep him. I think he's good not great but having more continuity on their line can only be good
What you've highlighted is a coaching issue not a talent issue. Also take the let's replace Morlon Greenwood with Channing Crowder example. Guess what - we replaced Morlon Greenwood with Morlon Greenwood MkII and had to suffer through rookie seasons whilst doing it. We'd have been better off keeping Morlon and using the Crowder pick on a position that needed upgrading like the OL. How about putting a bit more priority on developing young talent rather than cutting players who don't develop into sure fire pro-bowlers within 2 years.
good guards are usually in their 30s....as far as i know he's in his early to mid 20s. he's got plenty of room to grow, and has only got better in his years with us. it would be a shame to see him go, another team would utilize him to the fullest.
He's said he wants to try for a $5 million a year man. Those avg's never factor in signing bonus so he's looking at 5-6 years 25-30 million with $10-12 million in signing bonus. So yah Houston will sign him day 1 to add to their overpaid Dolphins list ( Morlon/Todd Wade).
There's no way Hadnot is worth that much money if those are indeed the numbers he's asking for. He's a good pulling guard with his quickness but the rest of his game is mediocre. I've seen glimpses of a great player but those were far too rare occasions to believe he's worth that money. He's also not a Parcell's type of linemen so I can't imagine the him offering anything more than a modest contract, if anything. There are better offensive linemen than Hadnot in free agency. Travelle Wharton, Jake Scott, Max Starks are some other young options. Faneca, Jordan Gross, and Flozell Adams are some other quality possibilities.
think we should try our hardest to keep Hadnot. IMO, we have three holes filled on the O-line (Vernon Carey, LT or RT. Samson Satele, C. Rex Hadnot, RG). I say we try to keep those holes filled so we can focus on the other holes during the draft. Agreed. Those are the only positions on the line where we are fine. Hadnot at RG SHOULD happen. Shelton needs to go.
Right on Nabo Cane! The only caveat to be offered is some of those guys may be able play good football, our coaching has been unable to develop them. Hadnot is Liewinski, only younger.....
It all depends on what Hadnot is looking for $$$-wise. If he's looking to break the bank and be paid like a Steve Hutchinson or Derrick Dockery, forget it. Another name to consider/remember is Drew Mormino, I'm curious to see what a year of lifting weights has done for him.
Despite the somewhat negative hype, Carey is already one of the top left tackles in the league, and it's much easier to find a right tackle then a left tackle. Also, I'm not so sure that I'm as high on Hadnot as you are.
Jordan Gross is a dinosaur?? Excuse me? 27 yrs old is a dinosaur now? Gross is the gem of this OL free agent group. If he gets the chance to test the market, we should take the money you want to spend to keep Hadnot, add the extra needed to it and sign Gross.
i'd re-sign hadnot, he was the best player on our o-lineman at some parts of the year, and him and satele together for a few more years can only help
Would signing Gross be better then drafting a Guard who is a Tuna Prototype? I dunno, next yr is "rebuild" time, I can see DT's coming in, but not a Olineman. And for Rex, IMO we could do worse, but we could do better resigning him is strictly a Coach's call.
When you shout about 121 yards, you want us to pay attention to the numbers. When the numbers don't favor your argument, you want us to pay attention to the intangibles. Either way, you think he's the bee's knees. We get it.
The post itself contained the rebuttal to your point. To the Patrriots, role players are a godsend...because the Pats are already a great team, and those guys make them that much better. To us - a 1-15 team - those guys are like frosting without a cake. Sugarless frosting.
I almost didn't recognize you without your Al Swearengen avatar. I know you to be reliable so I'm going to assume you've seen something somewhere indicating that's what he's asking for. As insane as those #s are, it's easy to understand why he's shooting for it, after last year's OG FA monopoly money binges. It's too bad; I'd like to see him stay. He's versatile, experienced and already has developed some rapport with the other linemen. I guess we can watch and see if Parcells is really the snake oil salesman he's reported to be.
