So has anyone else noticed that we basically have had absolutely no significant pass rush the Broncos game? Think about it. Sure Joey got a few sacks in but Wallace,Russell,Bulger,Losman,Cassell, and Thigpen all had ALL DAY long to throw on us it seems like. We need a different scheme defensively on Sunday IMO. Anyone agree? Please elaborate.

We need better pass rush players other than Porter is what we need.

Miami got a good rush against Losman and I think the defense came out in the 2nd half with the plan to contain Thigpen and not let him run wild like he did in the first half.

I think the cold slowed the pass rush a bit, but even though Albert held Porter in check the whole game, we did get 3 sacks.
I also think they were out of their comfort zone a bit due to not having Crowder in there and having to change things up a bit because of that.
You add in the fact that Thigpen is pretty quick on his feet, and the pass rush was just off.

I think things will be very different Sunday. Porter is going to be very disruptive, and Favre is going to be forcing a lot of throws because he is going to be harried all game long.

I like the idea of sending Nathan Jones off the corner more, he's had some good success trying it early, reminded me of a first glimpse of Yeramiah Bell when he first came to us.

We need to get more going, thank god our corners have stepped up immensley since the absent pass rush of the past few weeks. They'll find ways to get to farve, i'm sure the team has been working on new formations and stunts.

Myself, I don't like the thought of the corner blitz this week. You weaken the backfield too much and Favre will burn us.
We need pressure from up front. Cheat one safety on a limited basis - but most of the pressure needs to come from the front 7.

I think Joey P is wearing down a bit, and our Dline is currently more of a stay at home unit then a penetrating one.

Roth had a sack, and Nate Jones is getting some sacks the way Will Allen used to get a handful or so, so we aren't devoid of a pass rush.

I totaled the #s up a few weeks ago and the dolphins have 21 years of experience on the right side and 4 years of experience on the left. And that experience comes from a DE turned LOLB.

To say that we've had no significant pass rush since Denver is a bit of a stretch, at least for me. I think our pass rush has been inconsistent, at least for small stretches in halves of games, but overall it's one of the better units in the NFL. You mention Denver as the point where you saw our rush drop off. Let's look at just the sack totals from each of those games, for the sake of simplicity:

    • Seattle: 3 sacks
    • Oakland: 5 sacks
    • New England: 2 sacks
    • St. Louis: 0 sacks
    • Buffalo: 4 sacks
    • San Francisco: 5 sacks
    • Kansas City: 3 sacks

For the record, that works out to a total of 22 sacks in our last 7 games, good for an average rate of 3.14 sacks per game (roughly equivalent to pi, in math terms). I think that's pretty good.

In fact, it's better than pretty good. It's more than the complete season totals of 3 teams: Cleveland, Cincinatti, and Kansas City. It's only one shy of the season totals of Buffalo, Houston, and Washington.

More to the point, we're tied for 6th in the NFL in terms of total sacks, with 40 on the year.

Working the math backwards, you can see we totaled 18 sacks in our first 8 games of the season, or an average rate of 2.25 per game. If the pass rush has done anything, it's actually improved as the season has worn on.

If there's a common denominator to be gleaned from all of this, I'd say it's that our team has trouble when the opposition spreads us out. We've struggled against spread offenses like New England, San Francisco, and Kansas City. The Jets no doubt will try to employ some 3 and 4 wide receiver sets to take advantage of this trend.

Personally, I think that Pasqueloni has done a good job in supplementing our pass rush with blitzes from the secondary, and Charlie Anderson has been a nice surprise late in the season. As we head into Sunday, I'm much more concerned about our ability to line up with the Jets TEs, as I am the pass rush.

    No worries bro.

We always want to see 5-6 sacks a game ... that's what makes us fans.

We really need to ensure there's constant pressure on Favre next week. He has a propensity to throw gifts, and a big time rush would really help that along.

If I'm drafting next year, I'm making front seven a heavy priority. Fortunately this regime does so regardless.

Regardless of the numbers, I don't think there's any question that we struggle to get after the QB. It's not just about sack numbers. It's about closing down the pocket. You can keep a guy in the pocket and still make him uncomfortable and/or get sacks. Beyond the outside guys, there's just no pressure up the middle. None.

Look at our offense. Pennington isn't sacked very often. And we generally do a good job outside. But every other play (generalizing), the middle of the ship springs a leak (Alleman, Ndukwe). Fortunately we've got a veteran QB with great pocket presence and vision, because not everybody does. Those leaks inside torpedo a lot of plays on a lot of teams.

Brett Favre is the wildcard. If we can make Favre uncomfortable this week, our odds of winning increase significantly. He's shown this year that if you get in his face, he will turn the ball over.

We need to get it done without blitzing. Because if you don't get there....and more often than not, you don't.....New York has a lightning bolt they dump off to named Leon Washington that makes you pay.

Stop the run, get pressure on Favre and we win the game. We're not going to turn the ball over. We're not going to make mistakes offensively. Stop the run, get after Favre and capitalize on the short field he gives you.

Muck, I partially agree. You're right imo when it comes to little pressure over the middle.

But I don't know if I'd set front 7 as a high priority because of our youth.
Are you factoring in the equation that the youngsters such as Merling and Langford have a lot to improve next couple years?

I don't see much of a pass rush from non blitzing CBs or linebackers not named Joey Porter. Roth and Anderson are way too inconsistent, often times nonexistent. Holliday, Ferguson, and Langford aren't really supposed to get too much of a pass rush. Starks has been ok. But in general I agree with Muck and others that a pass rusher amongst the front 7 is a big priority in the offseason.

Nathan Jones will be used off the corner at times to get after Brett. The more pressure we can put on him the better. We need to keep good protection on Keller.

Muck is spot on, but even if our guys cannot menace the Pocket, all our guys are 6'4 or taller, we should have more tipped balls then we have this season.

Terrel Suggs if he isn't franchised, would be perfect.

Suggs plays the weak side, the same as Porter. Last season we saw that Porter can't play the strong side so I can't see us going after Suggs unless it is to replace Porter for some reason.

What i see is rushing three or four guys along the same rush lanes. I see very few moves and stunts, lane flooding or delayed blitzes. I see Porter simply being guided toward the outside and back of the pocket, past the quarterback. Lately it seems as though the opposing offensive linemen, one on one with our defensive linement, can hold their blocks forever. Sometimes we send another linebacker or a defensive back and we get a hurry or a sack, but without question the defensive line and Porter are not dominating. Clearly, this isn't the Fearsome Foursome or the Purple People Eaters. Yet we still get sacks and win games. Go figure.

I would say look at the matchups and the weather. Last week, I will give everyone a mulligan because it was so damn cold. This coming week, our defense will dominate. Favre is not mobile and we all know it. Thigpen could keep some of the rush in check because he could get it done with his feet. I am predicting that Porter will get 1.5 sacks, 2 interceptions for the defense and we will win this game. 27 - 13. On a side not, how great is it for the fans and players to have the last game of the season actually count for something. Those players who stayed with/or were retained by the team need to be given big props for coming out this year and playing their asses off. I have not been so plesantly surpirsed or happy with a team in quite a while. Go Fins.

National broadcast. Penny the Reject's return to New York in front of God and everybody, at the head of a group of last year's cellar-dwelling misfits wearing the uniform of one of the most storied franchises in the NFL, reborn under a recognized genius of the game, in a contest against their arch-rivals from Gotham for all the AFC East marbles. The mother of all Jets games. How much bigger can you possibly want it? How much bigger can it possibly be?

    Nonexistent pass rush? Watch.
