I only have a problem with Manny standing at home plate watching the ball when the ball he hit comes against the Angels.

Showboating is much different than doggin it...Jose reyes dogs it. He is an immature player.
A fist pump after you get an out is not worse than standing there admiring your HR, especially, if its not a HR.

I guess im just not a big fan of showboating, showing off anyway - I hate the sack dances, the TD dances - not saying that some of them arent entertaining, just saying i'm from the school of "act like you been there before and you'll be back again". Just give the ball back to the officials and get back to the huddle, or round the bases get your hi fives in and sit down.

So essentially what happened here is, and correct me if I'm wrong:

Sabathia replaces Mussina and Texiera replaces Abreu? Pretty much?

Joba celebrates like he just won the World Series when he gets outs in the middle of a game. He goes overboard.

At least with Papelbon when he celebrates it comes when he wins the game.

 Unless Burnett stays healthy and Sabathia can win in the postseason you won't be winning a World Series.

I know the point you are trying to make, but to be fair:

    2008 Opening Day Rotation
    Wang
    Pettitte
    Mussina
    Hughes
    Kennedy

    vs. 2009 Opening Day Rotation?
    CC
    AJ
    Wang
    Pettitte?
    Hughes

So, really, No, Wang is replacing Moose, and we significantly upgraded the top of the Rotation with CC and AJ compared to what we had in '08. Especially since it seems the top of the staff in 2009 simply slides down to the bottom portion, thus, strengthing it from Top to Bottom!

As far as bats, Swisher replaces Giambi, and Tex blows away Abreu. Still an upgrade in all combined categories between those swap outs.

And that doesnt even discuss Tex's glove and rediculously improved defense for the infield. Our outfield is still a questioin mark, but Swisher in a corner OF is an upgrade to Damon/Matsui and Nady is a clear defensive upgrade to Abreu. CF is still a question mark but Gardner can run like a deer if he is there, and Melky has the glove and arm. But I dont think we are done dealing just yet.

sure, but 2008 on paper, has significant upgrades and youth well over 2007 roster. I am looking forward to watching it all shake out. We have health/stability questions to answer, along with injury return/recovery on bats.

Sox have to see if some of the same performances and career years from Youk/Pedoria duplicate themselves. Health concerns exist in your rotation for some. Lowell, Papi, and JD are a injury risk. And Catcher is still open item for Sox to address.

    Its going to be fun....

I actually don't have a problem with Manny's HR watching, Joba's pump, Papelbon's stare (which I don't understand what the big deal with that is anyway) or fist pump or even Reyes antics. I like guys showing emotion, hell JD Drew gets crap because people say he has no emotion and looks like he doesn't give a damn. I just read an article on ESPN complaining about K-Rod pointing to the sky after a save, who cares? I really don't see the big deal is with any of it. If a player has a problem with it, then beat the team, that's the ultimate revenge (example see the Phillies when they play the Mets).

However to say Joba's fist pump isn't the same thing is cherry picking in my opinion, you can't say that you have a problem with one and not the other. Both things that Manny or Joba or Papelbon or Reyes does/do is equal to an extent.

And yes you're still generalizing Red Sox fans. Like I said before you can go to any sports park in any town and find fans that know nothing about the sport, or who just want to fight with anyone that isn't wearing hometown gear. I could tell stories about the crap I've seen at Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium and Fenway Park. It's no different anywhere.

So despite the 400 million shopping spree your pay roll is actually going down from last season...I dont know if that's a sign how many horrible deals you have coming off the books or not, but it's clearly a sign you guys have more money to spend lol.

So many crappy/pay didn't equal performance contracts were exiting this year...Pavano, Giambi, Abreu, Mussina, etc....

All Hal/Cashman did was see that money hit the floor pick it up and reinvest into new talent over a longer period of time. I can see how that helps lower 2009 compared to 2008! I believe we will be sitting at $209M for year, thats down from '08 slightly ($222M).

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/rumors/...ing-spree-Yanks-payroll-drops-?urn=mlb,131125
I know many folks HATE the approach the Yankees take, but these facts of using previously spent money, and simply reinvesting it into future contracts, and playing 100% by the rules of paying luxury-tax, but going after Free Agents and thereby reducing payroll in the process has to be commended. I cant view it any other way. Money is there to be spent...not spending it would be a travesty.

I don't mind it a bit, it's not my money and they are not breaking any
rules. Fact is though, this team-building stratgey they use didn't work for them in the 80's and it hasn't worked for them in this decade either. It will be interesting.

Uggghhhh, the 80's were retched. Yuck....

Honestly, since 96' things changed. But 'Ol Steinbrenner got greedy following '00 win and '01 tough loss, I think '03 then '04 sent him over the edge, and it wasn't until '06 that Cashman returned to his ways of protecting the farm system.

Obviously following Curt Flood Free Agency of the '70's, '76 was the year that New Steinbrenner convinced himself that FA was the ticket to success, with the likes of Championship Teams '77 & '78 leveraging Reggie's bat, and Gullet's arm and the like. But clearly it wasn't the holistic approach using draft, farm, trade and FA. George failed to understand Trade and FA wasn't the complete solution....the 80's proved that (sadly for Donnie Baseball's career).

But finally, with the taste of improved success '93-95 (Bernie, Pettitte, Posada, Jeter, Mendoza, Rivera) the smartest thing Cashman was doing was hiding from George (literally not writing their names down as STUD farm prospects) so he couldn't demand we trade them for FA talent...in '96 thru '00 that paid off, we found FA Arms mostly (Key, Wells, Cone, Clemens especially) and used trades and FA bats (Tino, Knoblauch, O'Neill, Boggs, Girardi) to augment the farm system in the areas of need, but this new Millennium I think the '01 loss burned his patience.

Giambi's contract and defensive liability compared to his predecessor Tino, was a bad gamble, the Bat was not going to off set the runs given up on D. Pavano, Brown, and Aging Arms just backfired. However, Cashman has again stockpiled a farm system (ironically going with many Tommy John recovering arms on the cheap - Brackman, Sanchez, Mitre, etc) and a few bats to see if we can re-create the approach of using all aspects to rebuild the franchise for additional titles. I think Jackson is the next Bernie (or at least the FO does); and Miranda is the 1B of the Future (if you feel Tex is future 1B/DH platoon in the coming years), however, shipping off Miranda wouldnt be out of the question either.

I think the new Stadium is soon to add Banners, mainly because we went back to finding the proper Arms, preparing the proper timing for the farm arms to supplement, and hopefully the bats will have a few remaining productive seasons (Reg. & Post) while some of the others ones come up when ready.

So who knows, time will tell, but we are clearly better off today (top to bottom), then we were last Sept when the season ended!

It was basically a 'stick it' to the Red Sox. The only reason why Cash was signed was because he was Wakefield's backstop last year, and did well catching him. He can't hit a lick and I'd be willing to bet that if Cash was on the any team besides the Red Sox, the Yankees wouldn't have thought twice about signing him, just like how they tried to trade for Mirabelli in 2006 before he was traded back to Boston.

But hey if I was running the Yankees I would have signed him too as he cost them nothing and keeps him away from the Sox.

Yup. No cost move, but potentially hurting the Sox. A few years ago they had a hard time finding someone that could catch Wakefield. So if it hurts them on one out of 5 days... the Yanks would be happy.

Randy Levine responds ESPN and the haters.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/25/sports/baseball/25yankees.html?_r=2&ref=baseball

"The philosophy of George Steinbrenner, which has been continued by Hal and Hank, is that the Yankees are a sacred trust to their fans and they believe in continually reinvesting in the team rather than reinvesting in themselves," Levine said Wednesday in reference to the team's principal owner and his two sons. "We follow all the rules of baseball, we pay millions of dollars to other teams and we are essential to the revenues generated by Major League Baseball and its networks and other entities."

"We are usually in the top of road attendance and we get some of the highest television ratings, both when we play national games and when we visit other teams," he said. He said if the Yankees' new stadium, which will be ready for the 2009 season, allows the team's revenue to increase, then "so will the revenues of the rest of the game."

Levine singled out the criticism that he said some ESPN's commentators had directed at Yankee spending and said he wondered why they were not criticizing their own network for reinvesting in its product by outbidding Fox by millions of dollars to acquire the rights to the Bowl Championship Series.</q>

I still think the Yanks arent done....moving Damon, Matsui, Cabrera, Swisher or Nady still seems logical.

And without Pettitte I am not sure of Joba's role right now. Still a few weeks remain before ST and I would not be surprised if something happens just before opening day if the need is pressing.

There were reports that at the end of December that Bernie was hurt and may hurt his chances for the WBC, good news that according to him, his injury is not that serious and he will continue to try out! I hope he plays because i would love to see Bernie back in baseball even if its only for the WBC!

incentives could bring it to 12 but this is how not to negotiate by Andy Pettitte. He was offered 10m guaranteed and talked himself into 5.5+ incentives which he needs to be heathy enough to reach and at 37 (when the season starts) health is no guarantee.

LOL, it does kind of sound like that.

I am happy, for that kind of money I feel Pettitte will be a good addition to this starting staff. Kind of the anti-Burnett. Historically very healthy and will eat innings. IF nothing else it lets Hughes come along slowly.

    Yankees reached free-agent quota
Unless limit raised, Bombers cannot sign any more Type As or Bs

Even though there was 63 A&B guys this year, hope this puts the Manny to NYY issue to bed.

Now, we can still make trades for A or B guys, but they have to sign somewhere first, or we trade for A or B talent that arent currently FAs. Its quite interesting.

I'm almost positive that Brian Cashman came out and said that this report was in fact false and they could sign up to 6 or 9 total type A or B free agents this year (not counting guys they already signed). I just forgot where I read it, maybe mlbtraderumors.com.

I dont know, but I defer to MLB and the collective bargaining agreement language. Not sure why MLB would be duped and publish an incorrect story on the details of its league that it covers, etc. Seems legit. Why would Manfred lie or be mistaken on these details?

If you lose Type A free agents do they count in the replacement total allowed (Abreu, Mussina, Giambi)??? If so, maybe, I really dont know what is true or false on this story, I simply had always heard about such a FA CAP rule but never knew the details. I just hope they stay away from Manny in pinstripes!

The 30 clubs in 30 days MLB Network show covered the Yankees. I also saw the Sox show.

Looking forward to this season...love the matchups with the staffs (including Rays). This looks like its going to be a knock down, drag out AL East battle all year long with the 3 headed monster.

Here is to hoping we dont bloody ourselves up to much....

The 30 clubs in 30 days is pretty good in my opinion, especially for people that isn't as familiar with a team. So far I've only seen the Sox and Tigers but I'm looking forward to catching up on the other teams too.

By the way the MLB network might be the greatest channel ever (non porno of course..... just kidding..... kind of....). I mean everything they do is extremely well done and I LOVE watching the old World Series games and specials. I recently soon both the 1995 and 2001 Series clips and remember those like it was yesterday.
