Mort was on last night saying it's pretty much an "NFL rule" that when your assistant coaches get asked to interview for HC positions, you pretty much let them. That was in regards to the Cowboys Jason Garrett, but I say good for Bowles. Having said that, I say why would you want to coach Detroit?

    Good for him.

Not saying he'll get it, but I've thought he'll be in line for a DC job somewhere at some point.

What also worries me is that he is going to be taking time away from playoff preparation to prepare for the interview. Especially next week should we still be playing.

Hopefully the Detroit brass flies down here to do it, rather than him going up there and back.

I thought it was the proper etiquitte to wait until the coach's season is over before conducting an interview. I seem to remember that this happened with a bunch of hot coordinators with the Giants. Teams wanted to interview their assistant coaches, but had to wait until after the playoffs.

It's not so much a "where". It's kinda like promotions at work.

You pretty much at least see where it's going to get you and 9/10 you take the higher job.

I've sort of always thought the plan all along was for Bowles to eventually become the DC and David Lee or perhaps Karl Dorrell to become the OC, taking over for Pasqualoni and Henning respectively. Let's face it, both are long in the tooth, and Bowles has been recommended for DC jobs in the past. I hope Bowles will stay.

Nothing to do with "pretty much" - you simply aren't allowed to refuse the request if it's for a HC position. You absolutely have to let them interview.

It is. So I'd assume that the FO went out of their way to let Bowles interview. He's a long shot and there's no way Detroit's going to wait for Bowles. To me this looks like the FO's doing Bowles a favor by letting him interview despite the playoff appearance. I like it.

I wish him the best of luck in his interview.

They scheduled an interview for after our season is over. He's not gonna go take time out of our playoff preperation to go interview for another job right now.

Bowles can't interview this week, if we win he can't interview next week from what I understand. Coaches on the bye team can interview this week.

I could be wrong, but I think that's how it goes.

It is, but it's perfectly possible to allow him to interview anyway if you want to. Some teams do as a courtesy to their assistants.

Nope. You interview them now, then can't offer anything until their season is over. We did it with Cam Cameron remember. But I thought there were rules, like only on By weeks or something.

I think Bowles has done a good job here in MIA, but he's not irreplaceable. If DET wants him, then i say good luck Bowles.

The thought just entered my head of him possibly being interviewed because of the Rooney Rule.

In combination with Muck's earlier statement.......

In the past, the NFL rule was "hand's off" until the teams season concluded. The length of time Romeo Crennel spent in the Playoffs/Superbowl with the Patriots was a major factor in the rule change. Everyone wanted to interview him but he could not interview until February. The appearance became that the most qualified candidate who would meet the Rooney rule was still coaching. So while Romeo was busy coaching the Patriots to the Superbowl, Art Shell was touring the country for token interviews. Too many times, teams would interview someone like Shell and then hire the offensive/defensive coordinator from last years Superbowl who just happen to miss the playoffs. The rule that structured the interview time frame did not reward success.

...........and by the way. Everyone should become accustomed to our staff being raided every year. It comes with the territory with Parcells which is just the same as saying it comes with the territory of success.

You could see this coming from a mile away, Bowles is a guy who instantly improves units where ever he has coached, from Cleveland to Miami.

Normally I'd say this was just a "chop" on the resume and a Rooney Rule interview, but with Harbaugh going from a Special Teams coach to the Ravens Head Coach successfully...I'm not so sure there may not be more to it.

This is correct. So basically the Lions are anticipating that we'll lose, which is why Bowles is set up for a week from now.

Even more incentive to win: the longer we stay in the playoffs the less coaches we lose.

I agree, that kind of thing can be a huge distraction. Just look at the Bucs D once Kiffen took the Tennessee game, they were horrible.
    Still, things even out

Rex Ryan will be talking to the Jets, so hopefully he will impact them more.

so how did we get capers here from the texans? we didn't interview him for hc and i remember the texans being up in arms about it. did they(texans)agree to let him interview with us? something about having to hire him as a higher title than what he was at houston(dc)so we just made up some bs title since we already had a dc listed?

I hope we don't lose Bowles to the Lions. I really like the way he turned around our Secondary. At first it looked like these guys can't cover anybody, but they really get their asses up and played darn good during our latest winning streak. It's even more impressive when you consider that our pass-rush was pretty mediocre during those games.

That is what makes him an attractive candidate though, he has improved every unit he has coached in the NFL, and the Lions are such a downtrodden franchise, I doubt they can hire a "name" Head Coach.
