I'm sorry, I just don't buy it. Pete differs from 99% of coaches in that he has some semblance of integrity for his job. He has had better offers from San Diego, Miami and SF in recent. I don't know why on earth he'd want to leave USC, and even if he went crazy and did, why the heck would he go to that train wreck?

btw, this article was written by "ESPN news services" which basically means Len Pasquarelli, but they don't want to let it be known on the basis that it will lose all credibility.

EDIT: Small print at the bottom: Joe Schad covers college football for ESPN. Information from ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli was used in this report.

    I rest my case.

Please let this be true. He might as well leave before the NCAA violations catch up to him.

Southern California coach Pete Carroll is expected to speak with Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank on Wednesday about the team's vacant head coaching position, ESPN reported, citing unnamed sources.

He's tried coaching in the NFL before and flopped, why would he want to give up one of the best programs in the nation for the Falcons? There's something behind this, he's running from something.

they'll give him complete control. Wayne was not about to give Carrol that after the way Saban treated everybody (though to be fair, Carrol has fun with his team but also runs USC like an NFL team). The whole reason Schotty was fired in SD was cause he clashed to much with AJ Smith, and SanFran would never give someone compelte control

I don't know which party I am more confused by here.

You're Pete Carroll.. You've got a job where you have it made in the shade-- Hollywood backdrop, Southern California's gorgeous weather and scenery, a job where you pretty much have everyone by the cajones at and can call your own shots for as long as you remain doing what you've done. You pretty much have a position where Conference Championships and BCS births seem to be a near lock.

You were twice fired in the NFL as Head Coach, and although you didn't stink out loud as bad as other Head Coaches have, you sure didn't leave much in terms of a lasting legacy either, other than being the guy who preceded Bill Bellicheck in New England.

The Falcons are an absolute wreck of a franchise, a train wreck that it at least three years away from being back to competitiveness. If you survive four years on this job, consider yourself lucky.

On the other hand, you're Arthur Blank. You just gave a hot shot college coach with a pro pedigree a 5 year contract worth 24 million dollars a little over 12 months ago. That investment was good for 11 months, a lousy record, a near mutiny and a backdoor escape by the coach when he had the first opportunity to make one.

Whereas Carroll isn't nearly as shady as Petrino, his heart certainly seems to be in the college game, as proof by the fact that he's rejected better jobs in the past. He's also one who seems to be good enough for mediocrity, but if you're looking for this guy to build you in to a Super Bowl contender, you'll be waiting awhile.

This potential courtship makes no sense for either party.

Dont underestimate the ego of Carroll, or just the need to get more attention and feel wanted by the NFL.

My thoughts are much the same. I dont understand why college coaches would go to the pros. Obviously, they hope to hit it big and become a super bowl winner. But .... thats MUCH easier said than done. It is much easier to coach your college team to a good bowl game. The salary differences arent huge anymore, and closing all the time. If your at a premiere school (like Carroll is, Petrino was, Saban was etc) you have such a massive inherent advantage your team coaches itself almost.
Going into the pro game from college is really almost 2 entirely different jobs. All of sudden, you lose your advantages-no superior recruiting, no patty cake rigged schedules, no 100 bowls that you could potentially get into. In fact, usually your coming into a team that is one of the lower rungs, forcing you to build from the ground up. All of a sudden you go from dealing with college kids saying "yes sir!" to adults who question your every move. Suddenly you have to deal with meddlesome owners, fan bases call for your head routinely, media hangs you out to dry, your competiton is much better. This is why college coaches have such a difficult time-because its a completely different game. X's O's are the same, everytihng else is different! If your a successful college coach, you come in thinking the world of yourself, because everyone else on campus does. Your used to getting everything you want/need, your used to winning-nay!- dominating other teams. Suddenly everything is reversed. Your ego is shattered.
Oh yeah, and when you start to falter, new college teams come calling with loads of money in their arms, beckoning you back into the warm fuzzy friendly world of football bowl factory schools, a pedestal waiting for you the moment you step off the airplane.
Why, exactly, do you expect somone to stay on through all the hard times? Why do you think these coaches can just waltz in and play GM and coach, when even long time NFL guys like Mike Holmgren struggle with the double duty?

I cant believe Blank hasnt learned his lesson. He JUST got burned by one, and now he wants another. Not only that, but a guy who actually HAS coached in the pros, and done mediore at best. I dont understand the allure of college coaches. I honestly wouldnt even bother reading their applications if I were looking for a coach. Its just not the same. Frankly, I feel Atlanta is in a worse situation than us right now, and if they bring in Carroll? Ouch ....

My idea why Carroll might really take the Atlanta job ?

My take on this. Could be farfetched but a possibliity.

Arthur Blank, Atlanta owner has a destoyed fan-base, weak season ticket holder base, and need for a new scene for his team. Atlanta to LA in 2-3 years, and Pete Carroll is back as the King of LA ?

Anyway to find out the stadium lease situation for the Falcons ? Can they buy their way out ?

If Blank can get civic people in the LA area to agree to a new stadium, and I'm sure the NFL would help hammer that out, I can see this happening.

Well, if I am Pete, I wait for them to move to LA in 2-3 years before I agree to leave as the KING of college ball in So-Cal.

My quess, whoever is HC of the Falcons doesnt make the move in 2-3 years so no way I think Carroll would take it with any expectation such as that.

I don't think Pete takes the job. He is just too happy in USC and his team is likely to be #1 again this season. Wayne Huizenga was going to show him the money, and Carroll didn't come here.
