If I'm not mistaken one point of the game is to actually MAKE the playoffs. We did and the Jets didn't. Brett Fart didn't get them there, Chad did get us there. Not only that, but beat him head to head in order to get there.

    Not validated at all.

It wasn't Pennington so much as the right side line breaking down all day long arrrrggghhhhh and seeing that he's only human after a while well, who wants to be getting killed all day.

I know why the Jets did what they did. I think it was a decent gamble. But it failed harder for them in the end than it did for us or Penny. Sucks to be them.
Their biggest failing is possibly not having a backup plan, unless they are convinced of Ratliffe.

I certainly hope you don't believe any of that rubbish in that article. Whether the Jets decision is vindicated or not it certainly had nothing to do with that game.

sadly, i must agree. He hasnt proven in his career he can win the big one, and lead a comeback when needed.....he couldnt make adjustments sunday, and looked completley lost and rushed all day.....he threw into triple and double coverage all day....he looked like a rookie from 1-4 pm on sunday! :(

hope he proves it wrong next year....

of course not, tis why its a different perspective. we need to get away from homerish articles from time to time to keep us fans grounded.

alas, i love pennington(look at my sig...plus i wrote a thread apologizing for mocking him for being a Jet with a noodle arm)

as did the entire right side of the offensive line. i am not saying pennington didn't have a horrible game, because he did. but to say you don't trust him as your starter any more? honestly????? one game?.

Dan Marino had his share of multi pick games too, i am not saying Pennington is Dan marino or anything but this stuff happens, particularly when you are going against arguably the best defense in the entire NFL with offensive lineman that were doing their best impersonations of turnstiles.

Eh, everyone is entitled to their opinions, Penny did ply poorly Sunday, if he gets praise when he plays well, he should also receive blame when he does not play well.

But Jets vindicated in releasing him?

Please, there aren't enough aroma trees at the local Pep Boys to cover the stinky from that move.

if he were a rookie, or even relatively young, fine. But he's not. In fact, as this article claims, he's been in this spot before. He wasn't a great playoff qb going in, and this game was his worst yet.

I've had to deal with jets fans all day telling me "Now you know why we got rid of Chad."

And what can i say...they're right. This is the same Chad that I used to mock when he would lose it all for the Jets every december.

    talk about apples and oranges.

one was a team that was super bowl or bust, them going undefeated in the regular season was irrelivent because that was not their goal, their goal was to win the super bowl again and they fell short.

the other is a quarterback who led a team that would have been satisfied with a 6-10 record to a division title.

The Ravens defense out muscled our offensive line and Pennington had no chance to set up and throw, and forced some bad passes when he probably should have taken the sack. The Ravens defense is Ray Lewis, they play to win. They beat up on the Cowboys and demolished the Jaguars.

I wish we would have gone for it on 4th and goal and forced the run a little more than we did.

You are correct, Penny lost this game and 2 crucial, perhaps 3 crucial turnovers, however no one else on offense or defense stepped up and helped our team out.

They put him in a position to fail on Sunday. Period.

The guard play was the worst I've seen on an NFL field since I've started watching football when I was like 6. Not to mention all of a sudden in the playoffs we start running receivers 25 to 35 yards down the field for some odd reason.

Also when I look back at the picks:
    1) Ted Ginn tripped. It was off target, but maybe he at least knocks it down or tackles Reed.
    2) One went through Ginns hands. Granted it sailed a bit and would have been a hell of a catch, but it went straight between them.
    3) They tackled his receiver before the ball got there, and the receiver was being held before that. Not hard to pick a ball off when you mug the guy.

Absolutely no excuse for the Bess one.

Wrong guy, never said that...I think it is funny how quickly people forget what 1-15 was like, we had the greatest turnaround in NFL history, and now Pennington is a scrub according to the article?

Please, that's just plain ol' stupid.

throwing into triple coverage is not the lines fault....even if he is pressured, he is smarter than that....just throw it away, punt, line up to play another series....you cant continuously put your defense in a hole and murder momentum....ints do that more than ANYTHING

I don't want him cut or gone, you're going to far there. The guy just really disappointed me as a fan. I actually feel lied to in a way. It was if he forgot who he was for an entire game.

And yeah, Parcells drafted a QB early in last years draft, a guy who I think has some potential. Im not saying he starts next year, cause i still think pennington deserves it, but I'm far less confident in him as our starter now then i was on sunday morning.

Ginn was open on the one that went through his hands. It wasn't a bad decision, it just sailed.

They absolutely mugged the receiver on the last one. That wasn't his fault.

I'd only attribute 2 of the 4 to actuall bad plays on his part.

On the pick that Reed returned for a TD and the first INT that went through Ginn's hands, the ball sailed on him, just like it did on the flea-flicker that Ginn came back and caught against the Jets. I think he was having arm problems (see my long post re stats and Penny's arm).

I think he just had a bad game against a defense that leaves -0- room for even the smallest mistakes, I won't defend his play, only that he is the one player most responsible for our improvement this year.

Put it this way, would the immortal Josh McCown have led us to win the AFC East for the first time in 8 years while tying the record for the fewest turnovers in NFL History?

No way, he just pressed and tried to do to much, there were several passes that were very UnPennington like in the Decision making process.

They did mug the receiver on that one. But when they replayed it, I felt it was going to be intercepted anyway. Our WR got mugged right when they (Reed?) jumped the route with the ball. I.e., even without getting mugged, our WR's momentum was carrying him back, he didn't see Reed (or whoever it was) jumping the route. It was an INT regardless.

Now, a penalty should have been called and the INT nullified ...

    Guys, a few things.

We all knew Chad was who he was when we picked him up. He does indeed have a ceiling depending upon his personel. Hes not going to light it up with Brandon London and Ted Ginn Jr., Devone Bess wasnt even on the field half the time because he hurt his pinkie(he shouldve tapped it up and when back in immediately. THIS IS THE PLAYOFFS). He also played with alot of pressure and against the best LB corp in the NFL, in addition, one of the best FS in the league in Ed Reed. We also had no running game for the most part and on defense, Flacco had no pressure and our defense folded when it mattered(since we still have glaring holes there, too).

We know we still have a patchwork team in place and Chad Pennington is not going to get us to Superbowl with scrubs. We need Greg Camarillo back and grab ourselves a true burner WR. We'll be able to run a conventional offense with the ability to do some trickery when we have a possession guy(Camarillo) with a speed guy(?), and that guy isnt Ginn. Ginn is going to some damage as a slot/3 or 4 WR, but hes not a starter. Fasano also needs to improve or we're looking at upgrading TE in 2010. Hopefully David Martin bounces back too. But the offense still needs a lot of work, especially the guard positions and RT. Smiley needs to find his niche(does he fit LG or RG..?) and Carey is probably gone. Donald Thomas is going to fill in somewhere. We need to look at C obviously.

Anyways, just because Chad Pennington has a ceiling, doesnt mean he cant win a Superbowl. Thats just stupid. He can get us there, but we have to help him out with better talent. Hes not an elite QB, hes not going to step in and play lights out despite his cast like a Marino or an Elway could. Hes going to get you only go far with a mediocre cast.

I think he was being held and pushed out of the play as well though. Sometimes as a QB if you see a guy getting mugged like that you throw the ball at him to draw the flag. I'm not saying thats what he did, just that the INT probably never should have happened.

isn't ginn the definition of a burner? don't we need more of a big physical receiver? we already have a bunch of short quick receivers.

Short quick and very young Wr's, that is one of our "problems", there are no obvious holes to fill with a draft pick or FA, our guys may just need more playing time to go up another level.

As for the premise, does anyone think if the Jets had won that last game, that Mangini would still have his job?

And it was Pennington v Favre head to head...is that validation?

Not really. More of a spot player. We need someone who can bring it consistently. I dont see Ginn developing into that.

I dont trust him going deep and getting open, fighting for the ball.
