Before I begin, consider this my disclaimer. When it comes to my all time favorite Miami Dolphins, Jason Taylor ranks as 1A right behind Marino. My 5 year old daughter is named Taylor, my name is Jason and my wife and I both thought it'd be cute to name her Taylor after my current favorite player.. Yeah.. I'm diehard, I know. LOL.

With that being said, I write this post in the most unbiased nature possible. I'm not usually one who speaks out of just emotional ties, I'm one who speaks out based on what I find to be logical in the inner depths of my mind and think before I jump.

    That being said, here goes.

I know a lot of people here are on the "Trade Taylor Bandwagon". Where I can understand the desire to get younger on defense and am fully on that bandwagon, I could not disagree with the calls for Taylor to be traded more.

Keep a few things in mind..

Number one, I'm not naive enough to believe Taylor's going to maintain this pace forever and he's at the point in his career where he's reached the pinnacle of what he's capable of. That being said, a declining Jason Taylor is still better than 99 percent of the other DE in the NFL. Honestly, can you name me 5 DE better than Taylor right now? The guy performed at a high impact level this season despite getting next to nothing in terms of support and was the lone bright spot on an otherwise dim defense. He's an impact player on defense, one who commands universal respect around the league as a guy who you build offensive lines and blocking schemes around. I see that not changing in the next two-three years.

Secondly, you can get all the youth in here you want, they're going to need a veteran in there to show 'em the ropes, to help them grow. By putting a team full of young and inexperienced out there, you run the risk of stunting their growth. Guarantee you, if Chris Long or Glenn Dorsey is the pick at #1 overall, which all signs point to, both will get hands on tutalage from one of the best in the NFL, much moreso than if you put Long in there across the line from or Dorsey next to a Matt Roth or another replacement.

Lastly, the impact Taylor has made on this franchise, on the Miami community and the league as a whole merits him the respect he's earned. He's arguably the greatest Dolphin to take the field since Marino (with Thomas as 1A), and I think deserves the right to finish his career and retire as a Dolphin.

Feel free to disagree with me, debate with me, I look forward to it. However, just wanted to throw this post up here to stir up the discussion so to speak.

I want JT to stay too... But the last couple of years this team has been really bad. BP will probably clean house just so that next season when we go 0-3 there's not someone in the locker room saying, "Here we go again!"

I believe JT is a great veteran that can mentor the young guys and I think he has a good 3 years left in the tank.

JT is the heart of the defense, and in this days when we will restart the rebuilding process, there can be two different realities: a teaching JT who helps younger players, or a disappointed JT, unwilling to play at his best.
That said, trading him may avoid the second case, but keeping him may reduce the entire process.

While Jason has been a stand up guy, great contributor to the community - as well as an All-Pro performer on the field .... i take exeption when anyone infers that players 'deserve' or are 'owed' anything. Really, they aren't .... they get paid ridiculous $$$ to perform.

Football is a business, and it must be treated that way. Enjoy players personalities and performances for as long as we can. Appreciate what they do. But don't think we owe them anything except our support, and to say 'thanks' when their time in South Florida is done.

Parcells will want to change the mentality of our defense, as we haven't gotten out of the 'bend don't break' mentality in YEARS. IF he thinks Jason is a part of that - then he'll be back.

I don't think anyone on this site wants to see Jason leave, but if Parcells decides to trade him, then he does; I just don't think there will be any viable trading partners [meaning giving us equitable trade 'value'].

I admire your devotion to such a legendary Miami Dolphin player but I can't understand why anyone would think keeping JT would benefit the Dolphins. The only way Taylor helps the Fins is by facilitating the youth movement process.

Ouch man, thats harsh. I think JT is better than a lot of those guys. However, I understand where you're coming from. If we had an opportunity to trade JT for a guy like Williams or Ware, i'd do it in a heartbeat. Too bad their teams wouldn't. We need to get younger. If JT can fetch a decent first day pick i'm all for trading him. We need to build for the future. Trading him would give us youth, more cap space, and it would give him an opportunity to play for a contender.

Anyone who believes that JT should be traded is really out to lunch. Anyone who believes that JT doesn't to deserve to be a Dolphin until he retires and is owed that option is out to lunch. By the same logic of those who advocate this concept would have to agree then that Marino should have been traded for the sake of getting fresh young talent.

Youth and talent are a valuable commodity, but without he leadership and mentorship of veteran players such as JT, that youth and talent is wasted. Who do young players look to for guidance when they are on the field? The coaches on the sidelines? No, they look to their Captains...their veteran leaders on the field.

While I do agree that Parcells will probably do alot of house cleaning, players such as JT and ZT are safe and secure in their jobs. I believe we've aquired enough draft picks by trading Welker to New England and Chambers to San Diego and other such trades that I don't believe there is a need to traded JT for future draft choices. If Parcells was looking to gan a few mre draft picks, I'd watch for a possible Ronnie Brown trade. A good player that has yet to be proven. THAT is what I would be weary of.

A lot of you say football is a business. Yes it is. An impact player like JT is good for business. If he stays in Miami, and can work with his new coaches (which I think he can), He will continue to be an impact player. He quailified for the Probowl this year. Imagine that, a defensive player that comes from a 1-15 team makes the pro bowl. That tells me a couple of things: 1 he still can play the game. 2. the rest of the league still respects him, and 3, he still wants to play.

As stated above, JT can be a force to guide new players. you have to take that into cosideration as well.

Parcell's comments ring true here, he wants JT to stay. I expect to see JT in dolphins uniform until he decides to hang it up.

and also I think another though that is going through Parcells head is, would the level of production that that 1st, or 2nd round pick that a taylor trade would net us, equal the same level of production that Taylor would give us? Whether it be an offensive, or defensive pick

I think it all comes down to what Parcells could get for Taylor. Lets face it if he can get a 2nd or a first for him... I think he is gone. Get that huge salary off the books, get a solid player(hopefully) in the draft in return and I know a lot don't want to hear it, but get a fresh voice/attitude in the locker room.

Parcells wants to get a dominant, young (so they will be dominant for a while) defense. The way to do that (sad to say) is to tear down and start over. Get some young solid leaders in there. I would love to have JT mentor whoever we draft... but the longer we wait the less we will get for trading him.

you have to put the Dolphins before any one player. I love what he has done for this organization, but the Dolphins need draft picks and if you don't unload him the Dolphins will get nothing in return. It's the nature of the league. BTW - if he stays, I wouldn't be upset either.

Exactly right. I love me some Jason Taylor (and you can bet Parcells and Ireland do too.) However, if someone is willing to overpay for him...make no mistake we are rebuilding. Do we have to trade JT? No. Do we need to? No. But if someone falls in love and makes it worth our while the FO has to do what is right for the franchise...and I guarantee you JT knows it as well.

you pretend to know a lot more than you possibly can....unless you are consistently in the Dolphins locker room. You know that his ankle was not hurting? You know what he did or didn't say and when he did or didn't say it?

The guy is one of the best players ever to put on a Dolphins uniform, and while I agree that the Dolphins organization doesn't owe him anything, we as Dolphin fans owe him a hell of a lot more than referring to him the way you do.

IMHO the best decision is for JT to stay. Players with his passion and ability do not grow on trees. The wisest thing for the franchise is to draft his heir replacement and have him groomed. And that is a plan B not a plan A IMHO since JT has enough left in the tank. He will not always be at such a high level but he should not be traded. He has earned the right to end his career as a Fin.

I really see both sides of this debate. I think it would be great to have a JT here when we do start to bring some of the younger players in here to mentor them and help them out. Not to mention the guy does still bring it on the field. Look at what he did this year with a secondary that was playing with almost all second string players. On the other hand its very difficult to turn down a nice trade deal for JT knowing that he's only under contract through 09 and his age. If there is that team out there that feels there defense could be a superbowl contender next year with somebody like him on their line then I see no reason they wouldn't give up a 1st round pick for him. There is no way though that I would take less than a high second round pick for him. You look at the Chambers deal and were basically getting another 3rd round pick instead of a 2nd because of where SD is going to finish.

I kinda skimmed through what you guys are talking about, and I do know JT had a torn ligament in his foot, but this should come as no surprise because he plays hurt every year. On a side note, 1-15 will bring out the worst in every player. I surprised there weren't more players who spoke out through the course of the season.

I think JT had a rough go of it in the first 5 games this past year partially because of the departures of Zgonina and Kevin Carter and also because our D coordinator misused both Jason Taylor AND Porter. Also Taylor is primarily a pass rushing specialist and teams were having a lot of success running the ball on us. Also we were usually playing from behind and had to honor the playfake. So while Taylor IS long on the tooth I believe he still is valuable to this team both as a player and a leader. Leaders are important on a team that is rebuilding. I say keep him around one more year. If used properly he wreaks havoc on offenses.

Look, I respect you Aqua... I really do. But this just isn't right... Aaron Schobel? Justin Smith? Kyle Vanden Bosch.... Patrick freakin' Kerney? Are you kidding me? I mean really, these 2nd tier DEs over... Jason Taylor?

I can understand if you'd rather have some of these guys for the future over JT, that's all fine and dandy. But the fact of the matter is: It doesn't matter. At most, I think we'll get a 2nd round pick for JT... that's pushing it. I'm all for trading JT if the offer is right, but we have to remember what we're getting rid of... We're getting rid of one of our biggest icons since Dan Marino, one of our playmakers, and more importantly, one of our defensive leaders.

Some people love JT way more than me, in fact I don't consider him my favorite player, probably not even in my top five at the moment. Ronnie Brown, Ted Ginn, Jason Allen, Zach Thomas, and John Beck/Jason Taylor. Okay, he's 5A/B... switch them around or whatever you wish. So I'm not saying this because I have a love affair with the guy (which could be said differently if I was arguing for Chambers and we wouldn't be disagreeing in the first place).

Jason Taylor commands respect for our defense, even Michael Strahan, whose team in currently in the playoffs, said that the Miami Dolphins are not as bad as their record suggests. Granted you can blame Cameron, you can blame Capers, you can blame JT himself, doesn't matter to me. Personally I prefer Capers, it was obvious he wasn't doing his job right to begin with when he wasn't playing JT like he was being played last year. I think Jason Taylor would have had yet another monsterous year if he was being played right, but nope... Mr. Capers denied of us that previledge. I'd go as far to say Mr. Huizenga denied of us that after he decided not to give him the head coaching job, but try to make it better and give him a nice big fat raise because Saban made him look good. But that's over now, we have a new sheriff in town and his name is Bill Parcells... Do I like that? Not sure. Will I learn to deal with and move on? Yes.

If we upped and trade Jason Taylor without even talking to him (like we did with Chambers), I'd be very upset. You can't really compare the two because I'm sorry, but Chambers is not the talent at his position as Jason Taylor is. We had a few players below Chambers that would be leaders of our team (Marty Booker, Ted Ginn). At defensive end we have... ummm Matt Roth? Rod Wright? Quentin Moses? I'm sorry but I don't like the idea of having Matt Roth opposite to Quentin Moses or whomever we draft.... be that Chris Long, Vernon Ghoulston, whomever. If we brought in Long, kept JT, it would be ideal. Think about it man, Long opposite to JT. We'll probably bring in Jason Ferguson to man the NT position if we go with the 3-4. Either way, JT on one side, Long on the other? That'd be scary because with JT being double teamed... who knows what Long could do.

There is only two reasons I'd trade JT... because he wants out or if we're given an offer we can't refuse (i.e. first round pick). I'm not a huge JT fan, but I think that's the right decision to make with him. I may be wrong, I may not be... that's how I feel though.

I think trading him is part of thr growing pains that fans and the franchise will face while trying to rebuild the team into a contender. Take the San Diego Chargers for example as they got rid of alot of their fan favorites to become what they are today. I'm sure everyone was unhappy when they had to see Rodney Harrison and Junior Seau move on but look at what came of that. They went younger and got playmakers all over their squad because they decided to build the team from scratch.

We're starting a rebuilding process and aging vets that still have some value are expendable, JT falls into that category. By the time this team is ready to contend, JT will already be out of the league or a shell of his former self. Holding onto him for sentimental reasons like "he should retire a Phin" are counterproductive for a team that needs to take advantage of all it's assets.
