Lets say a team offers us a 5th or a 6th round pick for Beck this offseason, do we jump all over it and take what we can get or hold off and keep him as a 3rd string QB?

Sorry bro this is a general Manager league forum.

No we trade John Beck for a 4th

Someone will move this but I'll answer anyway:

I have a feeling that the FO is going to continue to bring more of their guys in. They'll trade him if they find a pick worthy enough, I think.

Hard to say. He's shown enough not to get cut so far, it depends on how much upside the current regime sees in him.

I'd take a 6th for Beck. I'm afraid the market for a 27 year old QB with little starting experience will be thin. Cut bait on this guy.

I think we should hold onto him, we have too many needs to draft another QB this year and this is only the 2 time in his career that Chad Pennington has played all 16 games. Beck has a year in this offense, if anything were to happen to either of the Chad's, I would prefer to have Beck in there. He's more valuable to us than he is another team IMO.

What if you could pick up a verteran like Joey Harrington ( not saying has to be him just an example) and still be able to trade be for a decent pick. I just dont think John Beck is going to be even 2nd string worthy as shown this year when he lost that job to a rookie in Chad Henne. I feel if we can get any where from a 4th to a 7th for the guy that would be good and I would pull the trigger on that deal

This is my thinking.. Heck look at where we picked Donald Thomas... I would much rather take the chance on a 6th rounder, assuming Beck does not fit in to our long term plans, and sign a veteran as our 3rd backup.

Nah, a veteran wants to be a starter or a backup, not a 3rd stringer. Any vet that we could get to accept a 3rd string role isn't going to be any better than what we already have IMO, infact it may be a step backwards.

I think it depends upon whether they find a guy they think is a superior prospect. Otherwise, he seems like a Parcells' type QB.

Pennington proved this year how much a QB can change the entire makeup of a team.

Henne is far from a sure thing - having two young QB's to develop is not a bad thing. And I don't think anyone sees Pennington being our starter two years from now - having both of these guys available would be great.

Just because we might have hit on Donald Thomas (who isn't exactly a sure thing yet, either) doesn't mean we trade away all of our depth for 6th rounders.

I whole heartedly think we keep Beck. Never underestimate the importance/luxury of depth at the QB position. He is learning from one of the best vet QB's in the game because Chad see's his role as not only QB but the Vet who must prepare Henne and Beck for life in the NFL. I truly think Beck is more valuable here then what ever late round pick we may get for him. The fact that John has survived all the roster moves at least indicates the staff see him worth something for this team.

I know the words John Beck bring back a barrage of bad memories

The only bad memories I have of John are that he was a rookie who was thrown into an impossible situation to begin with, and was never prepared properly for that situation. I am of the mind had this staff been in place, John would have at least been better prepared for, and put in better situations to be starting QB. I honestly think the verdict is still out on John.

You think Rex Grossman or Joey Harrington would be a step backwards. Those guys have more experience then John Beck. A guy like Joey Harrinton, Kyle Boller,Quinn Gray,Tim Rattay would just be glad to be on a team and all of those guy have more experience then John Beck.

This might sound harsh, but in my opinion, John Beck just really doesn't have the tools to be an effective QB at any level. Be it 2nd string, 3rd string, etc. Problems with ball security, bad mechanics, shattered confidence due to the impossible situation he was placed in last year, and the list goes on. I'd love to see him prove me wrong but I would take a 6th round pick for him in a heartbeat.

Our front office knows what they are doing and can properly evaluate talent so if they've seen something in John Beck that us fans haven't they'll hang onto him.

Yea but what if Chad Pennington goes down like he has in the past we would have a guy that has never started a game in the NF in Chad Henne. The we would have a guy that has never won a game in 6 trys in John Beck. Also losing 6 games in a row as a rookie can not be good for you confidence.

It all depends on whether or not John Beck has made any progress during his year long sabbatical on the Bench, has Qb Coach Lee been working with him? Has his mechanics improved? Did he pick up our offensive system completely and thoroughly?

If not, then by all means, send him down the road, if he has upgraded his game, then 6th round pick for a quality 3rd string Qb is a waste of time and effort.

6th round guys are close to being UDFA's anyway, trading a Qb for one amounts to a giveaway of a player, heck, we even scored a 6th for McCown why settle for a 6th for John Beck?

Beck has alot of ability, there were several very qualified NFL people who felt that he could be a very good QB, add in the mishandling of last year and I think that Beck hasn't really shown us what type of player he can be. The other guys that you mentioned have all had their chance in more favorable environments and none of them made a big enough impression for me to rate them higher than John and his untapped potential under this coaching staff. As someone pointed out earlier, we're lucky to have two young QB's incase anything happens to Penny, why give up on one for the unknown (5th or 6th round player)? Finding a Donald Thomas in the later rounds doesn't happen very often, you may very well end up trading Beck away for nothing.

6 games does not a player make. Not many young QB's would have done well on last years late season team, infact alot of our veterans didn't look good during those 6 games. :wink2:

Rex Grossman has not shown that he has more talent the John Beck. Same with Joey Harrington. I think John Beck has had plenty of chances to show the coaching staff what he is worth. During trianingcamp he did not do enough to even earn the spot as a second string he got replaced by a guy that has never started in an NFL game. Also with having the 2 young qb's thing is also not good imo. Chad Pennington goes down then what you have a guy that has never started a NFL game in Chad Henne. The you have a guyb in John Beck that has lost every NFL game he has been in that can not be good for you confidence.

    Based on what?
Multiple qualified NFL guys thought Vernon Gholston would be a solid pick. Multiple guys thought that JMarc was worthy of a #1 overall..

Beck has not shown us much when he was given the opportunity to shine. Granted a lot of players had a rough 07 season on a 1-15 team, but Beck looked outmatched on the football field and couldn't even hold on to the snap.. He looked like a JV player out there. He had a chance to shine this year in TC and even before Chad Pennington was brought in was already in the doghouse. I just don't get all this potential talk when it comes to Beck, he seemed overmatched when he had the chance to make a name for himself and didn't make it out of TC and the pre-season as a legitimate backup....
If he has no chance to start here in the near future, or will go in as the 3rd string QB again next year, you have to make a move to unload him.. I'd like our chances better on a Parcells style QB late in the draft at this point.

4.5 games on a 1-15 team and a bad TC does not the exit door make, he may be gone, but he may not.

This is one of those situations that only the Staff knows what they think about J Beck, but I also know, they do not giveaway value.

I think Henne has the ability to step in and play well if Chad were to get injured.....I would deal Beck for a 5th. I think Henne is our likely future QB, and not Beck.

Here we go again with the Mike Martz thought Beck was good so it must be so. Seriously, how long will you hang onto this argument? That was pre-draft opinion in 2007. Nearly two years ago. Every year there are groups of guys who have good thoughts and opinions on every player that gets drafted on day 1. Not all of those players pan out. There has to come a time where the conclusion can be made that maybe those guys who thought Beck had it were wrong. Now I'll agree it's too early to completely write Beck off. But things aren't looking good and I think we're way past using 2007 pre-draft outlooks as any type of barometer to judge a player. Now it's all about what they have done on the field, in training camp, and preseason. And John Beck hasn't done much.

But I have missed these QB debates! Pennington has given us something good to talk about at the position for once.

    Parcells style QB!?!?!!

Beck is the third string QB. The chances of him seeing the field is small. With Henne showing enough to be back up, getting rid of Beck for getting rid of Beck sake does not make any sense.

Especially with the fact that Beck and Pennington have a relationship where Beck actually helps Pennington. Why mess that up to bring in someone who isn't needed?

WITH ALL of the positions that need an upgrade why even worry about 3rd string QB when one is there. Trading Beck for a 6th round pick and then drafting a QB in the 6th round just seems silly.

I didn't say we should draft a QB. I said I'd like our chances better drafting one that this current regime would have selected.

We tied an NFL record for fewest turnovers in a season, the last thing we need is slippery fumble hands on every third snap :tongue2:

We just made the playoffs with Pennington doing exactly that..

A third string Qb, if they ever make into the game, will be expected to avoid TO's while also moving the offense with the barest minimum of the playbook being used, J Beck can manage that much, it is his fumbles and his Confidence that has my attention.

I agree with everything except drafting a QB. We have Pennington, Henne, and if we get rid of Beck we bring in a vet or dime a dozen backup to be our 3rd stringer. No sense using another pick on a QB when we have a front office that can find talent in every round to fill positions of need.

Ummm the advantage of trading John Beck is that we have another veteran on the squad and we have a 6th round pick. Say Chad Pennington goes down he is out for 5 weeks we put Chad Henne in there he is not ready yet. So we got to our bench and we would have a veteran that has been there before and can handle it.

Padre, you just contradicted yourself. We know his fumbles and confidence are huge issues, how can he manage that much if he can't even get past the fundamental requirements to be a player in this league?

Try to remember the talk in early TC, Parcells and CO. got in to his head when they made him change his throwing motion and instead of stepping up he regressed.

Chad Pennington does throw the ball down field just not as much. With John Beck every pass during trianing camp was a checkdoew and that was in trianing camp not even agianst a frist sting defense. Chad Pennington also does not fumble every thing that hits his hands.

I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. Chad Pennington might not have thrown many bombs, but he did not throw a lot of checkdowns. At least not as a percentage of his total throws. A great deal of his throws were intermediate throws ranging from 12 - 20 yards. No exact stats to support this, but just what I saw watching every single snap this season. And almost every single one of his short throws were designed plays. The type of checkdowns Beck throws are panic plays where he dumps it off to a safety valve after franticly surveying the field for 2 seconds and not seeing anybody open or a throw he felt confident enough to make. There is a huge difference.
