Quarterback: * I don't see this as a need. Chad Pennington is our starter, a veteran who proved last year that he is the guy who gives us the best chance to win. Chad Henne is the QB of the future and will probably get another year to learn behind Pennington. John Beck could be moved for a 5-7th round draft pick but if not he is a strong player as a #3 Quarterback. Running Back: * I don't see this position as a need. Ronnie Brown is an elite back; people differ in this stance but he was under utilized in 2008. The coaching staff will not be that dumb again this year. They have already stated that the want to give Ronnie an increased role next season. Ricky Williams might be the best backup in the league. As 2008 went on, Ricky displayed more burst week by week. Ricky is defiantly a good player to have, Patrick Cobbs is the guy who can catch a pass out of the back-field and as he proved last season, he can hit the homerun. Loushaka Polite was solid all season for us both as a blocked and short-yardage runner. Wide Receiver: * I like what we have in Ted Ginn Jr., Davone Bess, and Greg Camarillo. However we still need a true #1 receiver. I don't see anyone in free agency who could really help us. Ernest Wilford is as good as done in Miami and cutting him will save us $1.5 million in cap space. Here are some players to watch... via Trade: *Anquan Boldin-Cardinals *La. Coles-Jets via Free Agency: *Amani Toomer via Draft: *Kenny Britt-Rutgers *Mohamed Massaqui-Georgia *Louis Murphy-Florida * Marki Mitchell-Nevada Tight End: *This was our most productive position all season IMO. Fasano had 7 TD's and was effective as a blocker. David Martin was our most improved player from 07 to 08. The only way I see us going Tight End is if we took Brandon Pettgirew in Round 1. The guy can block, catch, and is an all around player. Offensive Line: First off, Kudos to our front office for Jake Long b/c this guy is an Elite Left Tackle. We are defiantly set at Left Tackle with Big Jake. I think we are set at Guard arring any set-backs from the injuries of Justin Smiley and Donald thomas. Donald Thomas and Justin Smiley come back healthy and we are strong here. Andy Alleman, Ikechuku Ndukwe, and Samson Satele provide solid depth at the Guard position. Samson Satele is too small to be center so we either trade him or convert him to guard. He could be an effective Guard. I think Donald Thomas will be fine but my concern is with Justin Smiley. We obviously have a hole at Right Tackle with Vernon Carey being a free-agent. It would be smart to lock him up but he might want more than he is worth and IMO his 2008 campaiign was rather disappointing. Right Tackle and Offensive Tackle depth have to be major targets this off-season as well as a bigger, stronger Center. via Free Agency: *Jason Brown-Center-Ravens *Duke Preston-Center-Bills *Jordan Gross-Offensive Tackle-Panthers * Max Starks-Offensive Tackle-Steelers via Draft: *Max Unger-Center/Guard/Tackle-Oregon *Duke Robinson-Guard-Oklahoma *Antoine Caldwell-Center-Alabama * Garrett Reynolds-Offensive Tackle-North Carolina Defensive Line: *I expect Vonnie Holliday to be a cap casualty due to his $3.5 million cap hit. Kendall Langford and Phillip Merling proved they were ready to take reigns in 2008. In our playoff loss to Baltimore, Langford played a monster game. Not oo mention that Randy Starks is very good player for this rotation and was one of our best off-season acquisitions last season. I see us making a big run at Chris Canty in free agency as he is a Bill Parcells guy. I think we keep jason Ferguson in the middle for one more season. He had a really good 2008. Paul Soliai is the X-Factor. If this guy gets motivated he will be a good player for us. He is just a monster size-wise and we can lit a fire under him.. watch out. Rod Wright and Quentin Moses are goners IMO. via Free Agency: * Chris Canty-Defensive End-Cowboys via Draft: *Tyson Jackson-Defensive End-LSU *BJ Raji-Nose Tackle-Boston College *Sen'Derrick Marks-Defensive Tackle-Auburn *Evander Hood-Defensive Tackle-Missouri *Roy Miller-Nose Tackle-Texas *Terrence Taylor-Nose Tackle-Michigan Linebacker: * I see Offensive Line and Linebacker as the areas we address most. Channing Crowder is gone. He was a good player but missed assignments, injuries, and inconsistency priced him out of Miami. Matt Roth had a solid season and will still see the field but we need to create a pass rush opposite of Joey Porter. I see an pass-rushing Outside Linebacker as our biggest need. Imagine what Joey could do with a force on the outside. Reggie Torbor and Charlie Anderson could be in trouble especially with their cap hit; Torbor is gone ($2.5 million). Akin Ayodele will stay, might start but defiantly good for depth. Thru Draft and Free Agency will address this area.. via Free Agency: *Karlos Dansby-Cardinals *Bart Scott-Ravens *Kevin Burnett-Cowboys via Draft: * Clint Sintim-Outside Linebacker-Virginia * Larry English-Outside Linebacker-Northern illinois *Rey Maualuga-Inside Linebacker-USC Secondary: Three of our starters are free-agents so something needs to be done here, Signing Yeremiah bell and Andre Goodman must be priorities for our Front Office. I could watch Renaldo Hill walk for sure. Jason Allen is done as a Miami Dolphin IMO. I think we will look for a Free Safety in Free Agency and probably make OJ Atogwe a real priority. via Free Agency: *OJ Atogwe-Safety-Rams *Bryant MCFadden-Cornerback-Steelers via Draft: *Victor Harris-Cornerback-Virginia Tech * DJ Moore-Cornerback-Vanderbilt * Rashard Johnson-Safety-Alabama Good thing for the Dolphins they are $25 million under the cap. Releasing Vonnie Holliday, Jason Allen, Reggie Torbor, and Ernest Wilford saves $9 Million more. Use that 9 million to lock up Yeremiah Bell and Andre Goodman. Go sign Jason Brown, OJ Atogwe, Chris Canty, and other players for depth. Have an effective draft such as.. Round 1: Clint Sintim-Outside Linebacker-Virginia Round 2: Victor Harris-Cornerback-Virginia Tech Round 2B: Kenny Britt-Wide Receiver-Rutgers Round 3: Coye Francies-Cornerback-San Jose State Round 4: Garret Reynolds-Offensive Tackle-North Carolina Round 5: Roy Miller-Nose Tackle-Texas
Nice write up, but the Jets are not trading Coles to an AFC East rival. Especially when Miami has Chad..That's like giving the Phins passing game a case of 5 Hour Energy drinks.
I honestly think this is a solid, well though out write up. You addressed all of needs and ways to fill them. Will all of them happen? More than likely not. They are pretty logical scenarios though. A few MAY be a bit wishful thinking but nothing too out there. Again, nice write up.
You think we target this guy? He was arrested and his play is up and down. Sometimes he looks good and others he's non-existent. I don't see him here.
I want no part of Max Starks, the guy is a career underachiever who lost his job to a rookie back in 07 and hasn't played well enough to get back in the starting lineup since. He's a big guy who has talent, but he can't seem to put it together, we've had enough of those over the years.
Good job!!! At the QB position, I wouldn't mind us maybe signing Pat White if he is around in the 4th round. I would then try to trade Beck for a late 2nd day pick, or cut him if we have no takers. I think we need a bigger WR. I like Kenny Britt of Rutgers. Our O-line could always use some help....I like Max Unger of the Oregon Ducks at Center. After this I would mainly focus on defense: We need a quality CB or Safety or both, an OLB, and a NT.
Mike Lomabardi has posted that he is hearing the Redskins are going to go after Gross hard once free agency starts. No thank you, not re signing Carey and then bringing in Starks is a huge step backwards. I highly doubt Garrett Reynolds falls to the 4th round. Maybe a guy like Trevor Canfield or Craig Urbick or William Beatty.
Good write up....... One thing that you didn't address enough that the FO will is the LB postition........If Crowder is let go, we will heavily pursue Dansby..... I personally think out of our 5 major UFR we have as a team...Vernon, Goody, and Bell will all return......Leaving CC and Renaldo out....unless Renaldo will sign a low contract... BTW Charlie Anderson and Reggie Torbor are fantastic depth at LB......Why would we sign both Lb's to multi-year terms one off season.....and then the next release them both? I would also like to add this Cam Wake kid from the CFL...talk about a pass rusher....dang...... Now on Possible Free Agents: Please slowly step away from the Chris Canty kool-aid......Just because he was with Tuna in Big D does not mean he is a lock in Mia this year......Everybody needs to step away from the pitcher.....We have two fantastic YOUNG De's that will cause Huge problems for Offenses in the coming years.....and as you noted we have a good rotating DE with Starks, who i like very much........We need minimal help here....I am in favor of keeping Vonnie, unlike you my friend.....Vonnie also played Extremely well in that playoff game will BAL....... I like Jason Brown at C, hes young, huge, and played a tough nosed style of offense in BAL......With Smiley at LG......and i actually like Samson at RG...with Thomas rotating in.....The two tackles being Jake and Vernon........ Karlos Dansby WILL be in Aqua and Orange if....as i previously stated, Channing Crowder is not resigned....... I do really like Atogwe.....with Renaldo as depth is the defensive backfield.........A lot of people don't know this but Naddy( Renaldo Hill) has a whole bunch of versatility....he can play both safety positions and could also be a great situational CB...... I would like to see us try to deal Jason Allen.....hurts me to say that....... The WR position will not be a position high on the FO's list to fix......My opinion is..... its fine........ Yea...like i said Good Post...just places we don't see eye-to-eye.....
i dont know if kenny britt will last to our 2nd 2nd round pick, if he has a solid combine he could be a late 1st rounder
Dude......who told you Braylon Edwards is on our roster??? JK...know really if Braylon is the equivalent of a WR on 5 hour energy shots...please...please, do not send those horrid things near Tedd...or the Tedd Ginn family in that case....lolz
Driscoll, nice analogy, but I think I might disagree on Holliday...he seems to have developed as a new "Parcells" guy. Bill likes his veterans that know the ropes and he's one of those guys. There might even be a rework of his contract to keep him around for a year or two more...the only thing is, as fans who basically only see the players on Sunday, we can't see what he's really got left in the tank. He's definitely good karma for the young DL guys and certainly is well vested in the D we run here...It's hard for me to imagine that he's cast out at this point, but stranger things have happened... Pretty much can see most of the rest, but on Crowder...if they go after Bart Scott, he'd be paired up pretty nice with Crowder on the inside...I agree that Crowder seems to lack the instincts, but he's a natural leader and coupled with another strong ILB like Scott...whew...could be fun...
Anyone else as happy as me that Jason Allen will be gone?? He was a waste and I have hated the pick since the moment was announced. He has been apologized for time and time again, people wanted to blame the posotion change but we all know if he was a talented ball hawk he wouldve been learning on the job. See ya bum!
RealDriscoll, the first thing I noticed is Coles. Coles is no longer a #1 Wideout in this league, he's more of a #2 and has had a history of Concussion problems ever since the Christmas Day game of 2006 in Miami. Even before then it was widely assumed that he had previous concussions, but he's had reoccuring ones since. His production has gone down greatly, he's missed more games than before, he is nearing the end IMO. He is a #2 guy at this point. But hey, we'd gladly trade him to Miami. Maybe a reunited Chad and Laveranues could pull off 2002 type magic. I doubt it, but maybe. We are going to want him out of here, I'm sure we're going to try to move him to somebody.
Nice job here. Right off the top of my head, i would pass on Toomer, just too old to do us much good. i'll have to think on the rest and get back later with it.
Great write-up. I would be thrilled if Miami scooped Sintim and Britt. Although, I highly doubt that the dolphins take two cb's by the 3rd round. Maybe one late though.
