The Wilpons (also known as their coupons since they sometimes take the cheap way out) felt Milledge was a PR disaster and its been speculated by much of the press that they forced Minaya's hand in trading him. They (and Willie Randolph) didnt care for Milledge's showmanship (hi 5 ing fans, etc). They have been anal about player images since Rickey Henderson was caught playing cards in the clubhouse during the 99 NLCS.

The irony would be if the Yankees saw the significant talent Milledge has and said the PR risk is worth it because he can be a very good player. And if there is one spot the Yanks can use an upgrade its in CF where Milledge came through the Mets system playing and still feels most comfortable.

    Hope that explains it.:wink2:

Ahhhhhh, I see. I think it was just the way you had worded the sentence, I read it to mean the Yanks had decided he would be a headache....got it now.

I dont think the NATS would agree to move him, Dukes maybe, but if so, I think either would be a nice young talent/prospect to have over Nady or Swisher. Its win/win for Yanks.

I think Lastings is nice CF, but can play corner, same with Dukes (not as great CF but could survive) especially for 1 year. I do think Austin Jackson is called up no later than Sept '09 to make his debute and takes the reigns of CF for Yanks then sliding Milledge or Dukes to a corner role, with either Nady or Swisher in the other corner.

I just dont know if NATS would seriously move either....then again, they have a glutony of OFs as it is...so Swisher @ 1B may be the guy they really want and not Nady?

    Braves signed Lowe:
According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves agreed to terms with Derek Lowe on a four-year, $60MM deal.

    http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2009/01/13/braves_lowe.html

For that price ya'll can have him. Thats a worse contract then the Mets gave Glavine years ago and I wasnt sure that was possible.

Omar is a master though. On the same day the Braves sign Lowe the Mets express interest in Ben Sheets, per espn.

"Free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe has received a four-year contract offer worth about $60 million from the Braves, and indications are that he's leaning strongly toward signing with Atlanta, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

Now that the Mets are out of the running for Lowe, they're expected to turn their attention to free agent left-handers Randy Wolf and Oliver Perez.

One other possibility for the Mets is former Milwaukee Brewers ace Ben Sheets, whose price has dropped because of concerns about his health. "

Mets look at adding Sheets to staff

Oft-injured free-agent righty could fill role if Perez doesn't sign

By all accounts, re-signing Oliver Perez is the Mets' top remaining goal now for addressing their starting pitching. The longer Ben Sheets, Andy Pettitte, Randy Wolf and others on the free-agent market, however, the more alternatives the Mets have should talks on Perez hit a snag.

Cubs deal Pie to O's for lefty Olson

Outfield prospect struggled during two seasons in Chicago

I like the deal from the Cubs side....not sure what Pie gives the O's, and would rather have the two arms personally. Its not a huge trade, but extra arms may be quite valuable to Cubs.

And whatever's left over, the Dodgers are stuck with. Man, I wish the Manny deal were done already so we can make a move towards a veteran pitcher like Sheets or Wolf. Shawn Estes is certainly not what I hoped for.

Buster Olney was just on ESPN saying that the Cubs and Padres trade could be back on again with the Cubs obtaining Olson who the Padres like. Mine as well get Jake out out of here this organization with Alderson running it sucks and season tickets have dropped by more then 50% right now. Jake is a first class person, and deserves much better then this.

With the players the Cubs got for DeRosa and Pie hopefully they can swing something for Peavy. I really thought it was going to get done the first time but now they have a couple players the Padres have wanted.

Tom Verducci updates Mets/Sheets on MLB Hotstove:

    - Mets clearly want Sheets
    - Mets right now want it to be a heavily incentive based deal based on either starts or innings
    - Sheets says "I pitched 198 innings last year, I want money". So he wants more guaranteed
    - If they can bridge that gap, he feels something would get worked out.
    - Mets were supposedly offering 5 with 5 in incentives and sheets wants 9 guaranteed. It would be in interesting to see of the mets are willing to do like 7 with a few mil extra in incentives.

Sounds good, at least can make Boras a little nervous. However, Sheets is dumb if he really thinks people will see past his history, and look at his inning total.

EDIT: i should add that the Mets dont want to raise payroll over last year; right now theyre about 22m under that 143m total from last year. If Sheets averages say 9m they can still sign Perez for 10.

    Johan
    Sheets
    Pelfrey
    Perez
    Maine

    Now thats a sweet rotation.

    Jeff Kent retires:
    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3849334

Jeff Kent, who built a strong Hall of Fame case while setting the Major League Baseball record for career home runs by a second baseman, will formally announce his retirement Thursday at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers said. Kent's 351 career home runs as a second baseman are 74 more than Ryne Sandberg's total.

Kent spent 17 years in the majors, tying for 20th on baseball's all-time list with 560 doubles, while ranking 47th with 1,518 RBI and 62nd with 377 home runs. He won the National League MVP award with the San Francisco Giants in 2000, made five All-Star teams and won four Silver Slugger awards at second base.

As a side note...this is a prime example of why you cant always judge a player and his career before as 30 as some fans and media do. Kent from 24-30 was a pretty good 2B offensively but from 30-38 he was at the top of his position (along with Robbie Alomar).

One of the premier 2B in history. Just wished he could've won one for his hometown team. I remember he broke down in tears of joy about fulfilling his childhood dream of playing for the Dodgers when we first signed him. He deserves a HOF nod and though it was a bit rough for a bit, he played well for us.

    Some news per Rotoworld:

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Mets have improved their original offer to free agent Oliver Perez.
It's believed they initially offered $30 million over three years. It's unclear whether they've gone to four years in their latest offer. It's also hard to figure who it is that they're bidding against. Because of his asking price, there's been very little interest in Perez throughout the league.
    Source: SI.com

Astros owner Drayton McLane said he isn't likely to sign free agent Andy Pettitte.
"We’re pretty well set," he said. "I don’t see us entering into the negotiations." There's just no obvious fit for Pettitte other than the Yankees. The Dodgers are still looking for a starter, but he hasn't been mentioned in connection with them at all this month.

I don't think we'd be in the Pettitte mix unless there's really no one left. Surprised we haven't made overtures to Sheets yet. Still, we're about to sign Wolf again.

Kent is absolutely a hall of famer. He's also one of the most underappreciated players of his era, which makes me think he's going to have to wait awhile to get in.

    some news per rotoworld:

Yankees agreed to terms with LHP Andy Pettitte on a one-year, $5.5 million contract.
Pettitte will likely make $12 million if he stays healthy, so it's a fair deal. There's a very realistic chance that Phil Hughes, who is knocked out of the rotation by the signing, outpitches Pettitte this season. However, Hughes will still get his chances and the Yankees are now far less likely to have to rely on Ian Kennedy, Kei Igawa or someone else. The bigger loser is Alfredo Aceves. He may yet make the team as a middle reliever, but he's less likely now to get a chance to make 15 starts. Jan. 26 - 4:32 pm et

Royals agreed to terms with RHP Zack Greinke on a four-year contract.
Finally something positive in what's been a disastrous offseason for the Royals franchise. Most thought Greinke would test free agency when eligible in two years. He would have been just 27, and with the way he's improving, he could have been in line for one of the biggest contracts ever given out to a pitcher. Terms of this deal weren't revealed, but $35 million would seem to be appropriate. Jan. 26 - 1:39 pm et

Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have made a formal offer to free agent catcher Jason Varitek.
According to the report, "the Sox have formally presented an offer to Varitek's agent, Scott Boras, that could appease the catcher's desire for a second guaranteed season." Varitek will most definitely be taking a pay cut from the $10 million he made in '08, but exact terms of the offer have not yet been revealed. Jan. 25 - 9:00 am et
    Source: Boston Globe

Sean Casey has decided to retire and take a spot on the MLB network, WEEI reports.
Quite a surprise. Casey ceased being a quality regular years ago, but he probably could have spent at least the next five years serving as a pinch-hitter. He hit .322/.381/.393 in 199 at-bats for the Red Sox last season. Jan. 24 - 10:30 pm et

I am sure it will all get sorted out in Spring....but I still see lots of mock rotations that have Joba as Starter. (ESPN had him as #4 and Pettitte as #5)

I too think he should be in pen setting up Mo for 1 more season, but perhaps Yanks brass know something we dont.:hi5:

According to ESPN Radio's Bruce Levine, the Cubs are close to acquiring pitcher Aaron Heilman from the Mariners. The Ms want shortstop Ronny Cedeno and pitching in return. Heilman was dealt to Seattle in the J.J. Putz trade earlier this winter. Earlier this month, Ken Rosenthal mentioned that the Mariners were likely willing to trade Heilman, "who they did not consider a key component of the Putz trade."

Heilman, 30, is set to earn $1.625MM in '09. He'll be eligible for free agency after the 2010 season.

Levine also mentioned that three teams are interested in out-of-options Cubs hurler Rich Hill

Plus.... *drooool  ........ the playoffs!!!! :knucks:

Two other things I found on Rotoworld:
Zona signed Garland, Rockies resigned Ubaldo Jimenez for 4 years.

he Arizona Republic reports that Jon Garland and the Diamondbacks have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with an option for 2010.
According to the newspaper, "Garland's guaranteed money is believed to be in the $6 million to $8 million range" and it sounds like the option is a mutual one. Garland reportedly turned down a two-year, $14 million offer from Arizona last week. Jan. 28 - 11:35 am et
    Source: Arizona Republic

The Denver Post reports that the Rockies and Ubaldo Jimenez have come to terms on a four-year deal.
Jimenez wasn't up for good until July 2007, so he's still five years away from free agency. This deal will cover his first two years of arbitration in 2011 and 2012. As a result, it's probably not worth more than $10 million. Jan. 27 - 12:57 pm et

Actually to a large degree it is. He alone has blown a handful of September games the last two years.

By the way...Shake your fanny, we want Manny is the latest word on the radio and TV around here. Every Met fan and radio host is getting on the Mets for not going after Manny. Jerry Manuel was on Daily News Live (which is on SNY) the other day for an interview with TV/Radio host Joe Beningo and these were his words (paraphrased): "Manny is the greatest hitter of our generation. I would have no problem managing Manny and in fact would be honored to do so" He went on to say "....It's more important what a player does on the field then off it and Manny always produces"

Naturally this brought a smile to my face, no omar and the Wilpons just need to get it done!

If they're smart, they won't offer anything more than 3 years. Of course, anything the Mets put out under 3 years, Dodgers can easily match.

Id have no problem if the Met went to 3 plus a 4th year option that vests at like 1500 ab's and no "incidents" Total value maybe something like 85-90 mil.

Any team that gets him for 4 years stands a reasonable **** he gets to 700 homers in that uniform and an outside chance he challenges Hank Aaron's all time RBI record. :wink2:
