This looks a lot like a uni I was working on. Even the logo  Although my logo was more closely linked to the inaugural logo but modernised in a way similar to the falcons. My pants were funkier too.

Not a fan of the initial logo you posed skape, sorry. I'm no sure what the purpose of the orange bit is, kind of looks like a shark net that it caught itself on :chuckle:

But I wouldn't be surprised if we're staring down the face of a new uni or logo soon, with a new owner there's a good chance.

Well I was never won any contests but placed 3rd, 4th and 5th alot. I am part of the original Florida Skate crew from the late 70's and early 80's. It's been 17 yrs since I skated but I'm going to in two weeks in Tampa.

I can almost guarantee it.

Mr Ross just paid a jillion dollars for the team, and one way to recoup that money is to change colors & logos, etc.

I don't like it, but people should be prepared within the next year to see things like this very possibly happening.

I'd kill myself on rails and park benches but I could ride the heck out of ramps 12 feet high with 3 feet of vert. Go figure.

I was mostly sponsered by Florida skaters who were lucky enough to get hooked up. The Florida boys were real good but with almost all companies based in Cali they shunned us. Dogtown and Powell were the only ones who branched out back then and it was when skating started dying out again but it was fun to get something free and get paid

I simply don't buy that viewpoint.

Are you saying a team can't make money on merchandise without completely changing their identity?

Some of the teams with the highest sales year in and year out have NEVER changed anything. Dallas, Steelers, Green Bay, Chicago and the Raiders.

The best way for Ross to recoup that money is for team success.
You don't have to change the teams identity for that.

I don't think that's necessarily what he meant, but a new owner who is trying to put his stamp on the team might see new uniforms, logos, etc as a way to get a quick infusion of cash into the system, especially in a weak economy. The thought process would be that as soon as you change the look of the team, all of the fans will run out to buy the newest gear and the dollars will roll in, where if you wait for the team to win alot of games in order to see an increase in sales, you may very well wait 2 or 3 years. This is a business after all, we'll have to wait to see if Ross goes down that road. Hopefully not though.

Axle stall falls were actually invented by yours truely. I was doing them almost 8 months before Steve Alba and Steve Anderson were shown doing them in Skateboarder mag.

I also invented a trick called fakie to layback rollouts, layback air to tailtap, and was one of the first to do 360 rock-n-roll slides...and a few more.

Oh yeah and the Original Logo is where it's at.....

Dallas is a story all to itself. They are the Notre Dame of the NFL. They have a built in following no matter what happens to their franchise....they are, America's Team, and nothing is going to ever change that. They will sell, and sell BIG no matter what. To a somewhat lesser extent the Bears, GB, Steelers, Philly, Redskins, Broncos, Giants, NE, Raiders and 49'ers all have the same loyal followings.

The Miami Dolphins fall into the next bracket of teams, which I think includes, Bucs, Cleveland, San Diego, Indy, Carolina, Jets and a few others. They are the teams that have extreme loyal followings, but just not as big as these other teams. Most of their support comes from local fans, or those that have had a local connection at one time. Remember that when Glazer came in at Tampa in 1996, the very next year, the Bucs drastically changed colors and logos. It was a complete makeover, and a very profitable one for Malcom Glazer. He must have recovered the $ 192 million he bought the team for within a couple of years.

I think the same thing COULD, and remember I am just saying COULD happen here.....I personally think its almost inevitable. In lieu of a superstar on the team (sorry but Ronnie Brown is just not star material, very good player, but doesn't have the personality to be commerical) Ross will need a gimmick to get people to start buying Dolphins regalia and recover that purchase price.

    Just my opinion :wink2:

I've seen a lot of Dolphin fans in Iowa... I may have seen 1 or 2 fans of the Raiders, 49ers, and Redskins this year.

The fact of the matter is, every team has their loyal fan base. When you're winning, though, your fan base gets much larger...

The "looks like a cartoon" is the LAMEST argument I've ever heard in this regard. Have you guys taken a look around other logos among the sports world? Most of them look like a cartoon. That's what a logo is supposed to be. They're not supposed to look "real".

I didn't realize real Ravens were purple and black and had B's on their face. Or that Patriots had silver skin. Or Broncos had orange and blue hair and eyes. Or Buffaloes were blue or Lions were blue, Bears were orange...I think you get the idea. And that's just football. Take a look at logos from the 4 major sports and all the college teams and come back and tell me that a majority of logos look "real". They don't.

    Our logo is great.

I would not be in favor of changing the logo but I will admit that I've never liked that the Dolphin is wearing a helmet.

The Cowboys do tend to perennially stay at or near the top of the merchandise list but all the other teams fluctuate quite a bit. Even the Raiders dropped out of the top 10 this year. I'd put Miami in the same group as the Raiders, Packers and Steelers in terms of having a national following. That tier is usually in the top 10 but will be affected by prolonged periods of losing. Miami was a perennial top 5 in merchandise sales up to about 5 years ago.

I think Miami has the most unique color scheme in the league. That helps differentiate them and draws in new fans. I think that mascot also brings fans in. There have been (over the years) several polls on fan sites as to how people became fans and one of the more common answers has always been that they liked Dolphins. IMO those two factors along with a return to our historical level of success should keep us as one of those teams with a national following.

Ok, "Looks like a silly cartoon"

The bills logo does not look like a saturday morning cartoon Bill. The Patriots logo is freakishly lame, as is the Broncoes.

The Lions and the Bears look like drawings, art. Not cartoons. It is a different look. Cartoony is probably a better way of saying it. It looks goofy. Like the Dolphin is going to throw Dynamite at the Elmer Fudd.

Who is talking about looking real? No one said the Dolphin should look real. I am at least saying it went from looking kind of like a painting or a cool drawing into a silly saturday morning cartoon.

None of the examples you gave are "cartoons"... I am saying that our logo, with the goofy helmet, looks like it could fit in the Looney Toons universe along with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. I never once suggested that the logo should be a photorealistic dolphin, but rather, a more stylized and professional looking logo which is up with the times.

Logos of animals wearing sporting equipment is a thing of the 60s and 70s eras. If you really sit back and think about it, it is rather silly.

For pete's sake, a dolphin would DROWN with a helmet on!

just ease up.. I've been a fan longer than you've been alive, don't be dissing on our tradition which I have been a part of. You have ALWAYS wanted change and have created twenty of these threads over the years..because you have no sense of history or tradition. Express your opinion all you want, but don't belittle a time you didn't live in, or our tradition for which you have no respect.

I do not like that new design, while true, the 1997 "update" makes the Phin look like a grade "B" cartoon character, the "new" logo looks like a Phin that is constipated...to much sushi or something...no thanks..

I liked the flat white unis and the vague Phin...with the coral trim...reminds me of Shula.

Whoa, I am not dissing the tradition, or the 60s, or anyone who likes the logo. I am not sure how you got that impression. All I did was state a fact that this type of logo design was a product of that era, and has become outdated. I actually prefer the 30's, 40's era of athletic logo design as seen in the old NFL teams like the Packers, Colts, Cowboys. Those are classics and have a timeless quality to them. An animal wearing sporting equipment does not have that same sense of timeless quality, IMO.

It is also my opinion that logos of animals wearing clothes and other human things looks silly. That doesn't make me superior to anyone. It also doesnt make me disrespectful for simply having this opinion and stating as such.

This thread was never meant to become another debate. I honestly just wanted to know where the logo came from, but unfortunately I will likely never find the answer since the user who wears it doesnt know. If I had remembered which user was wearing it, I would have just PMd him.

I do not mind the Dolphin with the helmet. I just do not like the current design of it.

The tradition was broken in 1997 when they went from a classy nice looking Dolphin to a daffy duck cartoon character. Might as well give him spikey hair and having lighting bolts come out of his fins and look like an androgynous anime character

If you change a logo at all, it loses its tradition.

What if the Packers change the font of their trademark G to some crazy graphitti looking thing, wouldnt you consider that breaking of tradition?

You are basically upholding the tradition of 1997. I agree with Dupree here. I would actually prefer the original logo, to the current Looney Toons one. Regardless, I am a staunch proponent of helmetless dolphins though. :D
