well I hope you dont think Belichik has the final personel decisions. Those are done by the GM, Spioli. And yes basically Parcells is in charge of football operations, so yes why wouldn't he hire guys he knows. guys that instill a strong football game in their players, Sparano is a players coach, the players will follow a guy like that!! Al Groh was a rah rah guy and that does not work in the NFL, ask Petrino. As far as Sparano in Baltimore, do you think he would even be on their or any other radar if Parcells and Ireland didn't start the Sparano hype? Who on this site even knew the name until ESPN gameday did a segment on him, or when Miami said they were interested in him. I mean if he was so popular to the world why didn't Atlanta start name dropping him as soon as Petrino left? Look the bottom line is this, Parcells is here to set up a structure, Jeff Ireland is here to put the pieces of the structure together, and the Head Coach (Sparano) is in place to make sure the structure is well oiled and in working condition. Now once we have a HC, it will be on the Ireland and the HC to put a staff together that has the same structural philosophy, and within that philosophy the players will be chosen and taught that philosophy, and that teaching will be done by the HC and his staff. At that point it will be Parcells job to make sure that ALL strucural functions are being done correctly, basically holding each and every part of the equation accountable, which in any team or business would be the function of a VP!!

Not sure what CEO's we are talking about...

But in most types of business the CEO is the cornerstone of the company. He is the vision...He is the commander...he is the jury...he is the final word.

He meets with the top tier executive board members on a daily basis. They are not always in the same state, much less the same building. But they see to it each and every day that his gameplan is being followed through on.

The company I work for the CEO is about results, results and oh yeah...results. He knows just about everything in the company AS it is happening. There is very little that MATTERS that he does not know 1st hand about.

That is the way I see the TUNA. He is gonna get the people he has faith in. He will put them into positions, to follow through with his gameplan. That does not mean that Big Tuna will call plays or setup the real gameday gameplans. It just means that any plan the team is acting on he will have given a thumbs up to in advance. If the team only uses one LB for the whole game:lol:, all season...the big tuna would have given the nod first.

He will be on every executive, coach and player like white on rice. If they fart, he will tell them what they ate for lunch. I hope they can handle the pressure, b/c working for someone like the big tuna...wow....BETTER BRING YOUR A+++ GAME EVERYDAY TO WORK!!! ... or say  to a new team or even worse you new job an Wendy's.

CK I always respect your posts and you have a thorough way of presenting them, but. I too have to disagree with you on this one. This team needs a change and its pretty obvious that what we have been trying to do hasn't been working at all. This team has been in a tail spin since JJ left. Sure, Wannstedt had some initial success but that was with the personnel JJ had assembled.
Its sad that a once great and respected franchise has become the laughing stock of the NFL and all of it can be attributed mainly to terrible drafts and questionable player acquisitions. IMO Parcels was right when he said the Dolphins needed a structure put in place and hopefully Parcells can do that. CK for the Dolphins sake I just hope Parcells is the right one and you are wrong with your assessment.

I have to admit the same thoughts have basically crossed my mind when to comes to Sparano having to deal with working in Parcells shadow. I do think it is imperative that at the very least, Parcells must take a major step back after the pieces have been put in place.

If I were Parcells, I wouldn't even wait until after the draft. I would start by taking a step back at the draft. Let Ireland run the show. Let people inside and outside the organization see Ireland running the show.

The same goes for the mini and training camps. He just cannot be a regular presence on the field, or even at the facility. He needs to let this become Sparano and Ireland's team, and since the perception is already out there that he'll have his hands into everything, he'll even need to go out of his way to prove that point.

I had to sign up for this one.

Here is the thing with this Jets thing. We don't know how it would have turned with Belichick under Parcells. Maybe Parcells would have been different with Belichick as tthe coach. Maybe they would have become a dynasty. I am sure that it wouldn't have turned out the same way it did with Groh. So, with Belichick obviously being his 1st choice back then. And now it seems as though Sparano is his 1st choice now. I would not be worried if we get Sparano. It seems to me that we should be worried if we DON'T get him. If we have to settle for his 2nd or 3rd choice, then I think we should worry about the past repeating itself.

    Belichik is a nut job

Parcells owes alot to him, but its not like a normal man made the decision to leave

look at the Mangini relationship, Belichik looked childish, vendictive and border-line pathological

IMO Wayne Huizenga is the problem with this franchise. He knows nothing about football and the worst part is he advertises himself as an open ATM willing to give any amount of money out to anyone he can find to be his superbowl savior. These guys are taking Wayne to the cleaners even if they get fired or resign they are leaving with a nice chunk of the Huizenga estate. We need an owner who is a boss and has expertise in the field. Parcells isn't a long term solution he is a last ditch attempt to throw together a Superbowl. Wayne gets involved when he shouldn't and he is quiet when he should be involved. Since Wayne has been here the indians are controlling the chief and everytime a new indian gets an idea the chief changes everything destroying any chance for stability. This franchise lacks patience, stability ,and leadership based on football knowledge and I dont see that returning till Wayne is gone. Hey Wayne waving alot of cash around doesn't work in the NFL since the salary cap went into effect. Stay with MLB if you desire to buy a championship.

I said something along these lines a week or so ago when Sparano's name first came up that he would be better off taking the Ravens' gig. If the Fins tank he's on his own. If they do good then Parcells will get the credit. It may not be fair but that will be the perception. Nobody gives Barry Switzer any credit for winning a Super Bowl.It will always have an asterisk beside it that it was Jimmy's team. Unless Sparano is a highly selfless person he'd be better off going to Baltimore.

Your "larger point" about this organization is nothing more than trying to justify an idea that Cam deserved better or another year.

Cam is gone and deservedly so.

Lost in the worst year in Dolphin history is the worst kept secret that Tony Sparano has probably already agreed to be the head coach of a team you think is his second or third choice

Bottom line is Cam Cameron was a horrible coach who didn't know what he didn't know. Desperate times called for Huizenga to get the best football man he could to fix a completely broken and dysfunctional organization and he did. You might not like what Parcells brings but give us a better solution to the problem other than Parcells quitting in a year.

I think that deep down you believe that another year of Cam as HC, OC and co-GM with Mueller would have the Dolphins right back on the winning track. If you really believe that you weren't paying attention to what went on this year.

Had Cameron been even a moderately competent coach and won half of those horrid three point losses that he had a big hand in, he and Mueller might still be here further damaging the organization with their clueless and poorly executed plan to revive this franchise. I, for one, am glad that their regime is over.

Nothing Tony Becht says or thinks can convince me that HWH didn't do the best thing he could by bringing in a football guy as opposed to a glorified coordinator

    Another CK post with I don't agree. That's two in a row:confused2:

Are you sure you're the real CK?

To me Parcells is like the granddad that gives advice to to young father. There are alot of times when new dad's don't have a clue.
Personally I think Parcells is needed around this team more than Ireland and the new HC.

Ck is it worth considering that Bill P. does realize this mistake he made in NY that you are posting about and will go out of his way to make sure it will not happen again? If it were to happen again would it not make Parcells look the worse for it? Another question I would have for you CK that you can PM if you like but under what circumstances could you have seen Cam sticking around and being sucessful?

Lots of suppositions, no real facts or absolutes, CK. Parcells has never been in this role before. Few if any of the current or future Dolphins have played for Parcells. They will have far more interaction with their new HC than the head of football operations. My guess, which is at least as educated as yours, is that Sparano admires Parcells, looks at him as a mentor and is honored that Tuna would think of him first to fill the HC job. Given my assumptions about their relationship I think Sparano would be pretty secure taking this job and wouldn't be consumed with the angst that you've cooked up with your theories.

If Sparano takes the HC with us then he has thought it through he knows what Bill can do..., and everyone is up front with it..., Cam was already melting like a candle and BP hadn't likely lit him up yet...

CK missed a lot of points in this thread....

mainly, the differences between his job in NY and his job here. Parcells was the head coach for the NYJ, which changes the entire dynamic

i think the motivation behind this thread is CK's affinity for Cam Cameron. when Parcells was first hired, CK claimed he was almost certain that Cameron would be retained. Now that CK has been proven wrong, he is a bit salty.

Parcells just got here and now were all talking about when he's going to leave???
He's never going to coach again. He's got a great job for a great owner in a great area.
Parcells lives in FL anyway.... The only place he would go after Miami would be off in to the sunset.

Well he was GM at one point (2000) and this is the scenario CK was describing with Al Groh as HC of Jets at the time.

Listen, personally, I hope Parcells has grown as a GM or Overseer of Football Operations. I hope with Ireland on board, and soon to be HC (Sparano or not) he understands his role and its place. The simplest answer would be that Parcells doesnt roam the halls, doesnt sit in the back of meetings, and doesnt run into players in the weight room, cause any of that where he ACTS like a GM or HC equals him overstepping his bounds, and at the same time undermining his GM and HC.

I want Parcells to make the decisions that drive the direction of this team. I want him to be the ultimate decision maker for the Football operations. I hope he has learned what went right in NY, and what went wrong.

I hope he knows undermining Ireland and our HC (his hand picked guys) would be the worse thing he could do.

I don't believe that having Bill Parcells in charge after the draft is setting a coach up for failure. Don't agree with that at all. Lets not dump on this plan before its had its chance.

The point I was making was that Parcell's was the coach of the Jets before he was the GM. So he already had that relationship with those players. They still looked at him as the coach there, even when Groh was.

So it is an entirely different dynamic in Miami than it was in NY

    Responding to another post,
I dont think Sparano would necessarily be better off in Balt. This team just went 1- 15, so there should be less pressure to deliver right now. Every one knows we dont have the talent to contend at this point, but can you say that in Balt. He would be going to a team that he is at least familiar with the Management. I also think it is a done deal that he will be here. That is why they have already started hiring coaches. Dont you think he is giving his input into these hires before it is done? I do.
    Just a thought.

Ireland is in charge of personnel decisions.
The head coach is charged with getting that personnel to play to their full potential.
Parcells is in charge of monitoring the decsions of his GM and Coach to make sure he's made the correct hires, and also to give input whenever neccessary.

I don't see the problem. It's a three-headed monster and it looks like a recipe for success.

As for Bill getting too hands-onsy, well I trust his word that he will not, because well, what other option do we have?

As for the players and possible confusion of who their 'real' leader is. Well I don't think that could even be a potential problem so long as he has no involvment with the players.

And as far as Sparano goes. Why assume Bill is the reason he doesn't want to come here? The most logical reason he'd want to go there is that Baltimore isn't in as bad a shape as Miami.

I'm not reading this whole thread cos is over 60 posts but is amazing that at last we get a guy who knows football and will bring in the right people and now he needs to quit after 1 year?....or actually CK wants him to quit after a few months since the draft is in april......here's my qustion....are we gonna built a superbowl team with ONE draft?....I know Ireland is supposed to make the FINAL decision but Bill should be there to help him and advice him......and CK has said more than once that a G'M's job is more than the draft and free agency...we need to be stable....I'm hoping Tuna will be here at least the 4 years and not just a few months.

I wish Bill Parcells was never hired, because his big name and his big name alone has created this frenzy among the fans that cannot analyze the situation at hand and the previous situations Parcells has had when he had this kind of control over things. The premise of this frenzy is that Bill Parcells can do no wrong.

Contributing to this is this ridiculous notion that Jeff Ireland should have someone overseeing him but Bill Parcells shouldn't. Have you seen the drafts that Bill Parcells has had control over? They are horrible! When he left the Jets, he left that team in salary cap hell, and his poor draft picks have haunted them to this day. But for some reason, all that seems to get ignored in this process.

I've never said that Tune can do no wrong...everybody and anybody can make a mistake but are you saying that you want him gone right after the draft? Haven't we have enough change here? Lets be honest here...noone knews if this will work or not...not me, not you and not CK.....all we can do is hope that it works....I have a feeling that it'll work and you think it won't....time will tell.

Are you talking about the 2000 draft that netted Chad Pennington, Shaun Ellis, John Abraham, Anthony Becht and Lavernius Coles and helped the Jets win a division title in 2002 and another playoff berth in 20004, winning a playoff game each of those years?

Look I agree what Danny said. We don't know if this will work or not, but we certainly weren't headed in the right direction with Cam/Randy.

Parcells' track record tells you he leaves teams in better shape than he found them. I would think he's capable of doing the same here.

Are you kidding? First of all, as GM for the Jets in 2000, Parcells got the Jets FOUR FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS. No other GM has gotten such a bounty of #1 draft picks before. Who did he bring to the Jets in 2000?

    1) John Abraham (a multi-year Pro Bowler)
    2) Shaun Ellis (a very productive defensive linemen who put together several double digit sack years)
    3) Chad Pennington (a six year starting QB in the NFL)
    4) Anthony Becht (a solid starting TE)
    5) Laveranues Coles (a Pro Bowl wide receiver with playmaking ability)

and in his first season with Dallas...

    1) Terence Newman (a pro Bowl caliber corner)
    2) Jason Witten (one of the best TEs in the game today)
    3) Bradie James (4th round pick became a very solid starter for a tough Dallas defense)
*undrafted free agent* - Tony Romo (one of the better young QBs in the NFL. A steal!!!

Are you sure you want to call Parcells' drafts "horrible"? We should be so lucky to have those kind of "horrible" drafts here.

i liken CKs post to this:

take a successful family business .... the 'father' who started and built the business is older and wants to turn the 'operations' over to his sons. There are some sons who dream everyday about working for their father and aspire to take over the business. There are some sons who don't want the 'hassle' of listening to their father's 'advice' every step of the way - and instead leave to establish their own identity.

This 'potentially' was Bellicheck's decision ... and Sparano is in the same situation.

Parcells casts a very large shadow over the coach. One that can be overcome by winning, one that is lost quickly by losing [regardless of the reason].

I am happy that Parcells is here, as i share - and have been hoping for a like philosophy here in MIA for quite some time. For the most part, we are going back in time to Saban - year 1 all over again WRT personnel. It wasn't possible, but if this happened last year ... this franchise would be in such a different position right now - but i digress.

The question is ... does Sparano really want to come to MIA, does he feel compelled thru loyalty to Parcells to come to MIA, or does he see a better opportunity to win now with BALT.

That's precisely CK's point, why be the coach, if the players think you're not, as Bill put, why be the chief if you have no input and then you're responsible for the final meal...yet the man behind the scenes really made all the decisions. In other words our HC is a figure head with no teeth. That's what BB saw in NY and bolted to NE..Al Goth had enough and bolted to the college ranks. I would be hesitant to take the phin's gig too, for the reason CK mentioned. I've thought about this and I wondered who would really be good enough for "I ove me Bill" to really give full reigns of the team. If you have no input in the ingredients, to include your own coaches, then why would you really want the job, especially if the team fails. Everyone looks at you, but all you're doing is being a figure head, the real coach and GM is sitting a mile behind you.

No, the real question is does Sparano want to run his own show, or does he need Bill to run it for him..if he feels, like BB, that he can run this own show, then he goes to Balt. If he needs spoon feeding, then he comes to Miami, at some point, the son needs to be able to run the business after being under the father for so long. Sparano has been under bills leadership and others for long enough, it's time for that son to fly and show he's learned.

Excellent analogy and I agree 100%. If he wants to be a REAL HC, he should be allowed to pick HIS staff, not be force-fed more of Parcell's "Friends and Co.".

That would be the case if Sparano was a legitimate candidate for the Baltimore job. He isn't. That job will not be offered to him. The only reason Tony Sparano has been offered the Miami job is because he knows Bill.

Obviously, you want to ignore the drafts Parcells controlled from 1997-1999, where he drafted only 5 solid players during the entire span and in 1998 only got 1 good player in the entire draft. Let's ignore draft picks like Dorian Boose, Rick Terry, David Loverne....etc.

His 1997 draft produced James Farrior, a starter for many years in NY and still playing today.
Dedric Ward was a valuable receiver for several years while Leon Johnson was both a good 3rd down back and a good kick returner. In the 7th he got Jason Ferguson, a starter at NT for the Jets for many seasons, then a starter in Dallas. Could end up in Miami this year.

In 1998 he had no first round pick because he traded it for Curtis Martin. Smart move I'd say. In the fourth round he got Jason Fabini who was a starter at both RT and LT for the Jets and is still playing today.

In 1999 he had no first round pick because it was given to the Patriots as compensation for Parcells leaving. In the second he took Randy Thomas, another very good O-lineman who got a lucrative deal from Washington and is still a good player. He got Ryan Young later in the draft and he was another O-line starter for several seasons.

Yes he had some klunkers (Jason Wiltz, Boose, Scott Frost, etc.) but what team doesn't. In the same year Don Shula got Troy Vincent and Marco Coleman, he also took Eddie Blake.

I'd say overall Parcells has hit more than he's missed.

Of course he didn't hit on every player drafted. Don't forget in New England, he didn't have final say on the draft. And in the 1998 season, the Jets went 12-4 and made it to the AFC Championship game. He must have been doing something right.

CK, I dig your posts always because of the sound logic and depth of thought. However, I think our biggest issue has been the decisions concerning athletes. You referenced the Brees vs Culpepper and that is a good starting point. We are to a degree snakebitten. I live in LA and root for the Clippers. The Dolphins have turned into the Clippers a little in that regard. We pass on a dude (Willis, Cromartie, etc.) and they do big things. We pick a dude or trade for them and they get hurt, flame out. Now, I am no position to offer explanations
