Anyone know where this Alternate Dolphins Logo is from?

The Lions, Bears, and Bills logo look like art?

So if I draw a stickman thats art?

They look no different than any other logo. All they do is show an animated view of their teams name in most cases.

I don't buy the cartoon thing one bit.

Sorry but while you dont want to diss the tradition, it does come off that way even still. Although you always do it in a fairly tastefull manner, I cannot help but think that everytime you see a Dolphins shirt, or anything with the logo on it, you cringe.

So the Dolphin has a helmet and you think it looks out of place. Well my question is this. Doesn't a Dolphin look out of place as a name for a football team? Or a Raven, Bear, Buffalo, Bronco? I mean it's not like any of them can actually play the game right?

Hopefully your not getting bent out of shape because the thread kind of went south? You do have a history of yearly I would love to see a logo change just like I have one that says go back to the original...

I would rather see the old logo but it did not go thru drastic change. The Patsies would be an example of drastic.

It was much easier to swallow with the change JJ made because the only thing they did was try to make the Dolphin look a little tougher. Nothing HUGE whatsoever was changed

They kept the basic design so they really did not CHANGE it. JJ just wanted the Dolphin to look tougher. I never wanted that but its not like they took the helmet off or anything, which would really piss me off...

Another thing...Our logo sells very well. So it's not like people don't like it. From other Dolphins fans I've talked to around me, they all love our logo for points Ozzy and I have made. It's a more modern feel to the traditional logo. Same look, just bolder.

I don't know, but it kinda looks like my tuna logo.

The only reason its different, is cuz its a tuna.
Black, because its a blackfin tuna, and in part to Parcells being executive VPFO. If the sun was orange, He'd look like a big, fat, halloween tuna.

Otherwise the team logo is like skin, changing it would feel like im in someone else's.

The Lions, Bears and Bills logos do NOT look like cartoons. You couldnt stick them into a cartoon show and have them interact with other cartoon characters without looking out of place. The Lions logo doesnt even have eyes. Its just blue lion outline.

You could literally plop TD the Dolphin into Tiny Toons and noone would think anything the better of it. IMO, that isnt what a logo should be. A logo should be an abstract representation of a concept or idea. I am just viewing this from a design perspective. Of course, everyone has their own preferences, so some people might enjoy cartoon character logos, but most design standards tend to shy away from that in most industries because it does not come across as "professional"...

The only times you really see cartoon characters incorporated into logos is for plumbing services, pizza places, and minor league sports teams.

Listen, I can understand perfectly why people are so attached to this logo. The fact is, if the original logo was a piece of feces with a helmet on it, most of you wouldnt want to change that either as long as there was a history of success that went along with that logo. I am not trying to be disrespectful, simply trying to prove a point. The way the logo "looks" really has no bearing on your attachment to it. It is all about the success associated with it.

That is why no Buc fan really cried when the old homo-erotic Bucco Bruce logo got replaced in the late 90s.. There was no history of success associated with it. Now, if that same logo was associated with a dynasty, or a perfect season, there might have been more of a backlash against the change.

I dont think the Dolphins logo is horrible, but I also dont think its great, and I do admit that the helmet just makes it look goofy to me. I couldnt imagine ever tattooing the logo on myself, because to me, I think it would look as bad as a mickey mouse logo tattoo. I still sport a Phins cap around, and I do like the colors and the orange sun ring and everything. I just think the logo could use a little updating to get rid of a little bit of the cheese factor associated with the 60s sports logo designs.

I think the AFL in general had pretty crappy logos. The NFL had the cream of the crop. The simplest logos are the best imo. The classic, simplistic, timeless look of the Colts, Packer, Cowboys, 49er, Steeler logos. If I had to choose the best AFL logo, it would have to be the Chargers.

PS: I also think the Patriots logo is horrid. Modernization is not always best. But there has to be a balance imo, between turning a logo into a whack robot and a goofy cartoon.

OK seeing as I brought the logo here, I figured I should chime in. As much as I like my avatar its just that, an avatar. There is something to be said for holding on to tradition. when the Pats and Broncos changed their logo it was because their old ones were very very out of date. Not the case with our logo, and IMO the logo in my avatar looks far more like a cartoon than our current logo. I mean when we are talking about cartoons we do realize that we call a bunch of men a sea mammal right? So realism kind of goes out the window.

I dont know how you can possibly make this case considering all three of those logos were created around the same time, for the same league, and likely by the same designers. How can you say the big D with a horse in it logo is way outdated, whereas a dolphin with a helmet is not? I am sorry, but you really lost me there...

The Bears logo is a C but the Lions and Bills logo's, most absolutely 100 percent positively, could be placed right into a cartoon and interact with anything the artist wants it to. The lion is more of a stickman figure and thats where a ton of cartoons come from.

But my main point is those three are no more art than the Dolphins logo.

I dont see how you figure that the Dolphin could be placed in a cartoon any sooner than a lot of the NFL logos. This is simply wrong.

The way the logo looks has everything to do with it Skape. It had nothing to do with success because when I became a Dolphins fan they sucked. It is rich with tradition but for me the success came way after I saw and fell for.....the logo, the colors, and the fact that they were from Miami. I am a believer in keeping some things forever when they mean something to me.

You surely are in the minority so somethings not right. I mean I dont think people are sitting there saying man that logo looks like a cartoon so thats my team. A lot of people becoming fans of the team actually think it's cool, or awesome even....

I like the logo a lot and wouldn't be a fan of changing it. Why change something that's been there for so long? It may be just me but I'm not a fan of change especially for something that I've known for a long time. Changing the logo is like changing the team, gives it a whole new image and just isn't the same IMO.

I see that some of you are having a little trouble understanding the concept of a cartoon. Being that I am a child of the 80s and have been somewhat brainwashed by several hours of cartoon viewing in my lifetime, let me sortve give you guys a primer.

    This is a Cartoon:

Notice the eyes, and human expression in the shark's face. A real shark cannot smile as depicted in this image. This cartoon shark also has some exagerated features.

Now let us compare two logos in question...

This does not display any of the characteristics of a cartoon. For one, it does not have eyes, nor any discernable facial features. It is simply a sillhouette of a buffalo, with some abstract red stripe going down the side to denote that it is charging or running. If you put this same logo, without any alterations, into Jabber Jaw the cartoon, the audience would surely do a double take, as it does not appear to fit the art style of any cartoon show. It would look like a LOGO stuck in CARTOON.

Now here we have our favorite dolphin. It has eyes, a nice little grimmace, and it comes complete with a cute helmet. You could definately see this grumpy dolphin hanging out with Jabber Jaw and maybe even playing a game of undersea football with the cartoon shark who speaks like the 3 stooges.

Do you sortve understand a little better the differences between cartoon and logo? Noone is saying that other NFL logos are ART. They are logos! Whereas ours is more like a cartoon, than a logo.

There is no way to truly tell if I am a minority on this subject. Yes, on this board I appear to be in the minority, but I posited this question on other forums which have memberships mixed with many different NFL fans, and the consensus appears to be that the current dolphin logo with the helmet looks a bit childish and cheesy. An unbiased audience tends to favor the logo design in the original post.

Everything being said, this topic has garnered too much conversation for my liking. But as an aside, I saw an article yesterday saying that the Lions were planning a massive overhaul with their uniforms and logos... And guess what, there did not appear to be any outcry. I wonder why that is...

    This has reached absurd status.

You just compared a Blue Buffalo with a red streak coming off it's horns as an example of some reality based design while a blue Dolphin with a helmet (which represents a football team mind you so it makes perfect sense) as unrealistic or cartoonish. A Blue buffalo with a red acceleration streak eminating from it's horn is just as cartoonish. There's nothing wrong with that either because it's a friggin logo.

THe Racoon couldn't have been more correct deeming the cartoon argument as absurd.

All this being said, if the face on the Dolphin is really what has people so unbelievably obsessed then lose it. I'm fine with going back to the old version it's just the unending talk from a few about how our entire identity has sucked from the beginning and how we should change everything that drives me nuts.

It can easily be made out as an eye, but the point here is we're talking about cartoons and my friend cartoons are of the imagination. There are only a few rules of thumb...

Let me be clear and say this place is much better with you as a member. I would not want you to leave!

The change the logo thread has gotten you into many a heated argument in the past so maybe its just a good time to let that go?

I am with you Skape. The logo is cheesy and cartoonish. Many people are just resistant to change.

It isn't that others don't agree with you- its just that the only people that bother to reply are those who are against it.

Stephen Ross will leave his mark on this franchise and it is very likely that will include and update to our image.

I'm sure there will always be people who will whine about it and claim that we need to stick to 'tradition,' but those are the same people who will flock to the pro shops immediately after the change and buy jerseys..:pointlol:

Why is this logo being called an "alternate logo", like it's an official thing? We have alternate jerseys, but that's something that is offical and real. This "new" logo is just a submission by the poster and not anything that has been deemed offical. Stop calling it an alternate logo... change the title to: Anyone know where this Dolphins avatar is from?

its not an official logo, looks like someone took the protype alternative and added some twists to it in photoshop.

I think it looks awkward to me and the torso looks like it is bent to far....

    My opinion though....

Just to be a niggling pedant, the Colts got their horseshoe and UCLA shoulder loop in the 50s (when they were formed, right?), the Cowboys got their basic look in 1964 (one of the best uniforms ever IMO), and the Packers got theirs in the early 60s (including the G, which has never looked good to me, and the deep forest green, which is perfect) courtesy of Lombardi.

Trying to make the Dolphin look mean was kind of ridiculous in my opinion. But the old dolphins don't look that great either up close IMO--kind of like they've been hung on a wall and dried out for a few weeks.

I am basically hostile to uniform changes, but it's striking how both Lombardi at GB and Parcells at NE and the Jets made major changes. Clearly they both thought the uniform made a big difference.
