Apologies if it's been posted already.

I received a PS3 for Xmas, and it's been fine up till now. I don't use it ALOT, maybe once every couple of days. Well, last night I turn it on and get a message that the HDD is corrupted and being restored, so all my game saves are wiped out. Now it freezes at the welcome screen every time I turn it on.

Is this the PS3's version of the red rings of death?

I've never had that issue myself. I think the PS3 version of the "RROD" is what I had. My Blu-Ray drive packed it in and had to be fixed, something I've read that happens quite a bit. That said, Sony's warranty service was brilliant. I made one phone call that took about 3 minutes, dropped it off on a Thursday at the repair depot 3 blocks from my house and picked it up the following Wednesday.

I had something of this sort happen to me a few months back on an original launch 80gb model.

The only difference was that it didn't freeze at the welcome screen, only when i tried to start a game. I waas able to clear the memory out and re-install. That cleared up the issue. Sorry thats all I have for you. Like UT said Sony is great on their warranty service, so besides not having it for a week or so they will fix it.

Never happened to me, but I've read about this.

The HDD, not your PS3, is dying. You might want to format it (I'm not really sure how to do it, maybe someone else here knows), you can also get another HDD if it's easier for you.

I've heard of it before. It's not uncommon, but I work in a game store and get calls about it a lot. It's not like the red rings though. nothings that bad.

Wow...that doesn't say much for Sony quality. Guess I better call.

It is impossible for every single electronic item produced to not have at least a few that have failing issues somewhere. There is simply too much that can go wrong.

Sony's quality is fine. You just happened to be an unlucky one who got a bad unit.

Please look at post #5 where the fine gentleman says:

    And that's just one store.

Apparently, it's more than just a few. :wink2:

Wow...just googled "Playstation 3 AND freeze".

    Interesting....

    Look at my quote again:

    "at least a few"

I bet you can google "Light bulb stuck in anus" and get more than "a few" hits. So whatever man.

Yep, but most of the time (not saying this is the case) it's the owner's fault. Never and I mean NEVER shut your PS3 off from the back switch when/if it freezes (also never switch it off the back unless it's already on stand by), that's probably the most common reason why the HDD dies on most people.

Thanx for that info. Good to know for after I get it fixed. It might very well be the case in my situation.

What is the correct way to shut it off when it freezes?

If the controller stops responding, then press the power off button (the one in the front, below the tray) until you hear a beep and the light starts flashing. It might take a while to do it but it will shut down.

    Then what do you do?

I play NCAA 09 online a lot and it freezes at least twice a night and it has done it to points before where I leave it for about 30 minutes (so I don't have to use the back switch) then come back and its still frozen. Needless to say I have no choice but to use the back switch. So what else could I do in that situation.

Edit: Never mind I read the rest of the thread.

You're just unlucky. I have a PSone, PS2, and a PS3 and they all work fine. I took the PS2 to Iraq for a year and it survived despite heavy dust on a regular basis. I bought my PS3 two years ago and it hasn't missed a beat. I use it almost daily. I doubt there's ever been a high tech product mass produced that hasn't had some problems.
PS3s have a warranty so since you just got it you should be able to get a new one.

Mine's frozen a handfull of times. You can just hold down the power button on the front to restart it.

He's not just unlucky guys...If the 360 didn't exist, the Ps3 would be considered the horribly built machine in comparison to the Wii.

Sonys just lucky Microsoft did a horrible job, to make their not-so-good job look perfectly fine.

Plus Pagan, you're assuming all those calls are about ones that are as unused as yours. I'm sure a good portion of them have been used a lot for a while now.

Holy crap, that can't be right man. Does it happen with any other game?
I've had my PS3 for almost a year and it has frozen up maybe once or twice (with Uncharted)

But yeah, just press the power button until you hear a beep, it can take a while but it will get shut down.

Yea, mine has froze at most once and it has been put through baggage on an airplane(granted I had a case, but still). I've had it for almost a year with no issues.

Right, because Wii's never have problems and Nintendo's.

He is unlucky because the chances of a bad PS3 are the same chances of a bad Wii. As Stitches said, it's impossible for every mass-produced electronic item to be all 100% reliable.

You see what happens is that the EA servers just freeze thus freezing my PS3 in that position. Most of the time it just says to "reconnect" to the EA servers but quite a few times it just freezes. The only game this has ever happened with so I know its not the PS3 just the craptacular EA servers.

So it never freezes when loading the EA servers? I know sometimes it takes you like 30 minutes just to log in.

nope. Not saying the Wii isn't without it's flaws, but the chances are not the same.

There's a little thing called the 'yellow light of death' regarding the ps3. Again, not as bad as the three red lights, but still more common than anything the Wii has done. (Excluding Brawl not working on random systems. Something I still don't get, but haven't seen in personyet)

Chances are just the same. Wii error code 110213. All I gotta say. Nintendo gets their share of returns just like sony. Granted neither are in RROD territory but random probabilities are what would be the cause of any differences in repair quantities between the PS3 and Wii, not production quality.

I would actually expect more errors with a ps3, simply because of the # of things in the ps3 that can go wrong. Again, that is not a quality issue, just probability.

Well yeah, a console with a 40% percent fail rate can take attention away from anything. I disagree, he is unlucky. I know about half a dozen people with PS3s and not one of them have had a significant problem like this. I know three people right off the top of my head who have had an Xbox completely crap out or at a minimum scratch their games up. I won't get into how many people have started threads here about getting their 360s fixed or replaced. You can't mass produce a high tech product without some kind of problems but the odds are MUCH higher in your favor that a PS3 won't fail on you.

There is absolutely no RROD equivalent for PS3. If there was a defect on a scale that large we'd all know what it was and it would be undeniable, just like with the RROD.

Pretty much it is probability and not the "not-so-good job" that's been stated here. But I wouldn't consider the differences to be much at all to begin with.

No problems with my PlayStation 3 (knock on wood). First Sony console I've purchased that didn't fail on me. I went through two PlayStations and three PlayStation 2's. :glare:

Never had a Nintendo console fail on me EVER.

My Gamecube has sound issues....but still plays perfectly fine. My Wii stills runs perfect as well.
