I'm not very familar with this years' TE class going into the draft. I was hoping the Phins would find a way to grab Zach Miller last year but the Raiders landed him instead, plus we had more pressing needs at the time. I've been hoping for some time now however that we would find our Witten/Heap/Shockey/Gates type TE, but of course I'm still waiting. My question is do you see a mid-round talent that fits this type of mold that you think we should take a gamble on, and if so who? Thanks ahead of time for any thoughts...:hi5:

Here are a few good prospects. Some might go higher than predicted though.

    Martin Rucker, Missouri
    Height: 6-6. Weight: 255.
    40 Time: 4.85.
    Projected Round: 2-3.
Needs to improve his 40 to move into the first round. Caught 53 passes for 511 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2006.

    Chase Coffman*, Missouri
    Height: 6-6. Weight: 245.
    40 Time: 4.75.
    Projected Round: 2-3.
While there is some room for growth, Chase Coffman out-performed teammate Martin Rucker on the football field, catching 58 passes for 638 yards and 9 touchdowns

    Travis Beckum*, Wisconsin
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 221.
    40 Time: 4.60.
    Projected Round: 3.
Very small for a tight end, but you can't ignore his production: 61 receptions, 903 yards and 5 touchdowns. I just don't know where he'll fit in on the next level if he doesn't gain about 20 pounds.

    Joe Jon Finley, Oklahoma
    Height: 6-6. Weight: 260.
    40 Time: 4.70.
    Projected Round: 4.
After a 19-catch 2006 campaign, Joe Jon Finley has seven receptions, 130 yards and a touchdown in five games.

This guy seems injury prone but hes a load

    Brad Cottam, Tennessee
    Height: 6-8. Weight: 270.
    40 Time: 4.68.
    Projected Round: 5.
A monstrous tight end with decent size, Brad Cottam could be the best blocker at his position in this class.

Beckum will be a WR at the next level. Doesn't have the size to play TE.

It looks like we go defensive line with our 1st pick if we cant trade down , I think we will go LB (Crabble , Goff) or OT (Chris Williams) in the second. thats why I posted round 3 and down guys at TE

I believe Beckum and Coffman said they weren't coming out.

The TE I enjoyed watching the most in the bowl games was Derek Fine of Kansas, showed really good hands. He can play in the slot or go out wide like a receiver. 6'-3", 250lbs. Senior. Don't really know his speed, but he's not a plodder.

The other TE that I liked in the bowl games was Dustin Keller of Purdue. He has the hands, athleticism and speed, although, he's not that big, 6'-4", 240 lbs. I've seem him slated to go on day 2 of the draft.

I also like Brad Cottam, but he is very injury prone...5 surgeries in 4 yrs, only caught 26 passes for 466 yds while at Tennessee. I've seen where he's slated to go around 4th-5th round. I would be surprised if he got drafted before the 6th round, and also wouldn't be surprised if he was undrafted.

I didn't get to see this guy during the year, but he sounds intriguing. Darrell Strong: 6-5, 255 lbs. Here's link about him. http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/college/pitt/s_523381.html

there are some very good TE prospects.

Martellus Bennett out of A&M is probably the most intriguing prospect because of his size, speed, and overall athleticism (was given a first round grade by scouts for the NBA following his senior year in HS). While a great prospect, he is still raw since A&M did not run a pro offense.

Another underclassmen to watch is Jermichael Finley out of Texas. Another raw talent, but like Bennett could develop into very good TEs.

As for the seniors, three are head and shoulders above the rest. John Carlson (Notre Dame), Martin Rucker (Mizzou), and Fred Davis (USC).

Davis is still somewhat raw since he's made the switch from a WR as a freshmen to a TE. Has not been overly productive in college, but that's mainly because of the abundance of talent around him. As a senior, he really became a leader and focal point of a young offense.

Carlson is probably the best TE in terms of overall skill level, but has seen his stock fall due to a bad senior year on a bad Notre Dame team.

Rucker is a very good recieving TE, but has had some struggles as a blocker. Davis and Calson aren't great blockers, but both have improved. Rucker is definatly more of a red zone/move the chains player.

There are some other decent prospects in the draft as well...

Dustin Keller (Purdue) and Jacob Tamme (Kentucky) are a bit undersized, and not good blockers but have very reliable hands.

Kellen Davis (Michigan State) is another very raw player, but is athletic enough to develop into a good player.

i was just checking out this highlight vid of Keller below, seems like he has really solid hands and good speed, but then again his size does come into play.

Hawks maybe, but a lot of people think they've got their eyes on Jonathan Stewart as Alexander's replacement.

    Packers, highly doubt it.

I like Rucker and I believe his blocking has improved greatly. That said, it'll still make him fall to a spot where we could nab him with a 3rd rounder. Carlson likewise but mostly due to ND's struggles. Fred Davis and Bennett are likely out of our range unless we spend an early 2nd rounder.

I like Carlson with the 64th pick (top of 3rd round). I think he brings what Parcells will want (which Davis does not).

BTW, our TE situation is so awful, we could grab a Cottom later (on top of a day one TE) with one of our supplemental picks. Bringing in two TE's is not out of the question. If not two this year, it might be one this year and another next year as we develop our nucleus for the long term.

In Flames, are you commenting how he has good hands just from the highlight video?

If so, let me remind everyone... Highlight videos are just that, they show the players BEST plays. So even if he dropped 30 balls (obvious exaggeration) the highlight video could still be the same bc those plays would just not be in it.

Now if you have seen the kid play a lot and watched a bunch of his games... and still feel he has great hands, then fine. Just be careful making assumptions of a players ability just bc of a "highlight video".

Watching that video of Carlson, he appears to catch most of his passes with his upper body facing the qb, which really causes him to have to really slow down and turn his upper body, he then has to turn back around and re-accelerate, and he's not that quick in the first place...really limiting his YAC. Seems to have good hands, although, like a poster essentially said previously, the highlights only show the catches, not the misses, but he was catching a lot balls in traffic, that's a good sign.

Being the Aggie that I am, I saw a lot of Martellus Bennett and yes he is still very raw but man has he got some potential. Coach DumbAss-chione completely under utilized him otherwise he would have been a very, very talented weapon on offense. I'd like to say he's going to slip into the 3rd round but I have a feeling he's going to impress a lot of people at the combine and shoot up the draft boards, especially with everyone looking for the new Antonio Gates. He's got great size, speed and hands though his character might be a little iffy. If he's there in the 3rd and we haven't taken Davis or Rucker, we'd have to take him. He be a great safety net and a huge target for Beck in the red zone.
