Ahh, I don't like the arcade shooters anymore. I'm playing Project Reality, a mod for BF2. It is great, and focuses on teamplay, squads, and all kinds of realism. It really is a great game, for more info check out projectreality.com With that being said, I am looking forward to ArmA II and Operation Flashpoint 2.
After spending quite a few hours with PR I will attest that it is one of the best mods I have ever played. It feels the way BF2 should have been, but with a heavier focus on realism than most games bother with. Everything from the sounds of the bullets to realistic vehicle damage & challenging/deep aircraft controls....I love it all. Also, I will say that the heavy focus on teamwork may put some people off. Certain people tend to prefer the Rambo style gameplay and this mod will not serve them well. My all time favorite mods Counter-Strike - Half Life Desert Combat - BF1942 Project Reality - BF2
Well put. If you are in a good squad, with a competent leader, it actually feels as if you are there. Everyone on VOIP, following orders, covering streets as the rest of the squad crosses it....just great. You can’t imagine how much fun it is to work as a unit with 5 others communicating with voice. There is a sense of accountability for your other squad members and a HUGE sense of satisfaction when you do something as simple as kill someone, especially considering the deviation with the gun shots. You have to pull up your sights (no x-hairs) and wait for the accuracy to settle. Also, you have control your rate of fire to maintain the accuracy, account for bullet drop, incredible really. To give you another example of teamwork, there are dedicated chopper pilots. There is no feeling like being the squad leader, calling in for extract, puffing colored smoke for the chopper, watch it approach and land and load up your squad. Next, you tell the pilot the map coordinates of where you want to be inserted. Chopper drops you at your designated location, if you make it. Your squad then rushes out, goes prone, scans the LZ for hostiles, then you are on your way. It really puts you in the battle. It does require patience, and has a learning curve, but is WELL worth it.
Yeah, the mod truly shines when you aren't in a bad squad. Otherwise you are in for some long waits But that is kind of a good thing too, so that player/squad death has a bigger impact on the fight. A good Squad Leader who doesn't charge into battle alone & sets up squad command posts(I forgot what they were called-The spawn point that allows you access to Quartermaster). I also like how the APCs actually serve a major purpose, giving extra/mobile spawn points for the entire team & allow everyone access to the Quartermaster for Unique weapon kits. The changes made to the physics are still some of the best I've seen with any mod. Like you said, the guns handle differently, and far more realism is factored into simple firefights. Call me crazy, but the naked UI's are better as well. I love how the entire screen is dedicated to your field of vision & doesn't clutter your screen with information that our RL soldiers on the ground don't have in their faces in the first place.
