After watching the better teams throwing the ball and scoring points almost at will. Then seeing horrible passing games like ours, falcons, ravens and some others. Does running the ball and great D really win games. I'm not sure that is true in the modern day Nfl. With defensive backs practically handcuffed, pass interferense, and defensive hoding calls up. And with the great atheletic wr's , and spread offenses. It seems so easy to pass the ball. As Ron Jaworski says points come in the passing game.I also look back to the year Ricky W. won the rushing title and we had one of the best defenses in the league. Yet we didn't make the playoffs because we had a horrible passing game with Jay Fielder. I look at a team like Jacksonville that for the last few years always had a running game and good defense. Yet didn't become a legitatmite threat until David Garrad. Do I think defense is unimportant no just not as important. You must score a lot of points in this league to be successful. Because with teams like ne, dallas, greenbay and indy you only can slow those passing games down but so much.

It looks like their is a real change brewing in the NFL. RBs are becoming a dime a dozen, and defense doesn't seem to mean quite as much. It's the teams that can air it out that are having the most success in today's NFL. And unfortunately the Fins are way behind in that department. We've got a lot of catching up to do.

New England, Dallas, Green Bay, and Indy all have very good to great defenses this year. New England can confuse you with multiple looks, Dallas is strong at every position, Green Bay's secondary is tremendous, and Indy was easily the most improved from last year to this year.

As far as defense winning games, go back and watch film of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens. They had no passing game to speak of, but their defense carried them to the Super Bowl. Similar issue last year with the Chicago Bears, who made it to the Super Bowl on the strength of their defense and special teams.

The passing game certainly opens things up, but we've seen teams win games without a big name under center.

New England, Dallas, Green Bay, and Indy all have legit franchise QB's under center not game mangers.

Speaking of the Ravens and Bears, where are they now?

Yeah but all of those teams typically outscore their opponents with high power passing games Dallas game up 20 points a game this year. Yeah they do have defenses good enough to get stops and to shut down average to bad pasing games. But they also struggle against good passing games. And Chicago and the 2000 Ravens were the expception no the rule.

Which brings me to our own draft. We have to settle our qb position. Don't care if we have to sell out in the draft or fa. We must get that franchise qb in Miami. Then start somewhere else. I don't think big time Rb like mcfadden , peterson , lt or larry j. are neccesary for a successful offense. And far as defense give me a dominant front seven that can harass a qb. Shut down corners our nice, but teams usually just spread the field and go after your 2nd, 3rd, 4th corner or your safety.

Same place the Bengals and Rams are...in the crapper..Two great Os with franchise QBs and recievers out the arse...One thing is for sure you need good QB play to get to the dance but a smash mouth team can still win.Pressuring the QB has become paramount because coverage doesnt work like it used to that was JAXs fatal flaw this year.

IMO Defense wins championships. I have seen primarily all defensive teams win championships and I have seen teams that have both an offense and defense like the teams you listed win championships, but I have never seen an all offensive team win any championships. Even the Rams when they had the greatest show on turf had a really good defense and it shows because look how they play now with only offense. Defense IMO is the foundation, if your opponent can't score then you can't lose.

I think if you amend the statement to defense, running the ball, and having your qb take care of the ball, yes that wins championships.

IMO, the whole TEAM wins championships....you can't win with just a QB and don't forget how much the special teams means.....you need to score points but if you get outscore then it doesn't matter.

    Ozzy rules!!

The spread offense has been creeping in the NFL for a while starting with the colts, but it was the first year I have seen use it full time in the NFL. Since this is a copycat league a lot of teams will follow the PAtriots, PAcks, Colts style of offense and defensives will eventually shut it down.

It all starts up front.... on both sides of the ball... no team is going to do anything deep in the playoff's without dominant players (units) on both lines...

Defense wins championships... but in todays NFL with the new rules changes.. your offense better be balanced... and have an ability to quick strike...

After what I would call a horrific weekend of officiating... look for the refs to start to let the players play.... and that almost always gives the defense an advantage....
