Don't know how to cut and paste but Edgar Thompson on the Daily Dolphin states he signed a 5yr deal. Can someone go there and post the Blog on here for everyone else?..Thanks
Dolphins sign Vernon Carey glad we got him signed, hopefully we didnt pay a ton for him. 1 less hole going into next season.
oops sorry. i started a thread right after this one..here is the link http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thedailydolphin/
http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thedailydolphin/2009/02/20/dolphins-sign-vernon-carey/ Here you go. Glad we got that done before other teams had a shot at him
Can't wait to see how much we're paying him. I'm thinking 5 years, 27 million. Or somewhere close to that area.
Hey NyFinfan let me try and help you out. To cut and paste a blog just go to the page and up top you will see the web address starting with http:// go to the very end of the address and move your mouse just to the right of it and click once on your left mouse key. This will turn the whole address blue, now move your mouse over the highlighted address and make a right hand mouse click and choose copy. Now come to this blog and in this box where we type our blog do a right hand click with your mouse and chose paste, and you are done.
Guess this is why they didn't feel the need to tag him ?? At any rate, it's a good move for us...one less hole to fill now...the next question....do they still go after Jason Brown ?????
Well, that clearly puts to rest the theory that Ireland and Spaprano weren't high on Carey's talent. They certainly would have let him walk if that was the case. Carey's a key ingredient as he's interchangeable at RT,LT and Guard. Hope we got a little "home town discount" or at the least didn't break the bank on him.
This definitly gives me a sense of relief knowing that our line can continue to develop without too many changes.
sweet. now with the bookends locked up, and Thomas and Smiley getting healthy, only concern is the Center spot.
This is great news. Very solid by the FO. Vernon Carey was the first on my list that I wanted re-signed.
That PBP blog that said that the Dolphins didnt like him that much was pure speculation and is incorrect . We were so close to signing a deal that franchising him was unnecessary although IMO they would have if they had to . Hopefully this means we are close to signing Bell too .
Edgar Thompson, of the Palm Beach Post, reports the Miami Dolphins have re-signed OT Vernon Carey to a six-year contract worth $42 million, according to sources. http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl 7 mil a year not bad if correct
When will the inflation of salaries end? This stuff is getting out of control. He's decent, but 40 something million? C'mon. I mean, it's the norm right now in the league so I can't blame the front office.. but this crap has got to end somewhere.
Not now... but in 4 years when the Salary cap has increased a great deal, or with the threat of a Uncapped future he is definately worth it. And if you think he would not have gotten more money from another team in freaa Agency you are sadly mistaken.
Come on, you guys should know that Vern Carey will NEVER see all $42 million. I thought y'all were more savvy than that. The question is how much of that money is bonus money. Cause in the NFL, the contracts aren't guaranteed. The odds are, the contract is back-loaded and they'll cut him after 4-5 years.
Wow, i just got home, answered a phone call from the Miami Dolphins (my caller ID said) about season tickets and then i get this great news. I AM WET OVER THIS! O wait, I spilled my Cherry Coke...........
It sounds like a lot of cash in today's dollars but over the life of the contract it's really not a bad deal. Not to mention the flexibility we'll have in the last 2 years of it.
There is not a chance Carey would've seen $42 million on the Free Agent market. Carey is a good, not great, RT. He's solid but replaceable. There is a lot over paying going on in sports today, Miami just had one of those days themselves.
Carey was the #2 or #3 FA tackle. Jordan Gross got $60 million for his 6 year contract . Carey got less. Don't see how he was over paid.
Since he was rated by many as the best remaining tackle (after Gross got signed), he would have seen that kind of money. I bet the Fins got a bit of a discount due to homerism and no state tax, too. Every year, the top FA's get paid big $$, especially in a weak class, just cause teams have money to spend and are looking to make a big splash (Redskins!). He may not be a top tackle in the whole league, but he is the best of what's available now. On the plus side for us, he can play T and G, plus if Jake ever goes down, he has experience in the LT spot.
I think its a good choice. He's played hard for us and id like to keep most if not all of our starters together on the line.
You gotta expect this reaction from a jet fan. 1. The total dollar amount in an NFL contract is IRRELEVANT. Its all about the guaranteed money, which is information we do not have. Its too early to judge if the Dolphins overspent or not. 2. Even if you look at the total number (which you really shouldn't), its still a good deal. Last year, the jets signed Damien Woody to be their starting RT. His contract was 5 years for $25.5 million, with only $11 mil guaranteed. Woody gets 5 million/year. One year later, Carey gets $7 mil/year. Is Carey worth $2 mil more than Woody? Probably. Carey can play LT and RT. Woody is a converted center playing RT. 3. As for the "good, not great" quote about Carey's ability, I would agree that he is not great, but he's better than merely "good." 4. To claim that "there's not a chance" that Carey would get $42 million in free agency is ignorant. Please back up this assertion with some facts. Gross just got $10 mil/year. I think Carey is at least worth 70% of Gross.
So, we were the team that overpaid him. NO, NO, its okay, someone was going to do it and we'd have likely experienced a drop off if he left, but I agree: he's a "good" guard - nothing more.
Ireland and parcell's wouldn't have offered it to him if they didn't think he was worth it, I really doubt they would overpay for anyone.
Should've expected this kind of reaction from a Miami fan. Jordan Gross is a Top 5 LEFT TACKLE, meaning, he protects the blindside of the Quarterback which is a hell of a lot more important than being a RIGHT TACKLE in the 6-10 range where you are not protecting the blind side of the Quarterback because Chad Pennington, like Jake Delhomme, is right handed. Carey's deal should've been around the lines of 6 years, $30 million. In the end, he's solid, and a good job bringing him back.
