just what qualifies an offensive(or even a defensive) LINE coach to be a NFL HEAD COACH
and be heralded as the next savior at that position??? I know some-one here must have the ans. I'm sure there is a reason to believe he can handle a 50 plus man roster...a complete game planning for both sides of the football....know how to make game day and half time adjustments to both sides of the ball...handle and mentor 15 to 20 coaches under his toteledge and be responsable for their body of work. A line coach has what...7 to 10 players he's incharge of on his line and only a portion of the playbook to impliment and teach his men....not even develope and compile said playbook(offense and defense)....ect..ect..ect. I know some-one has the ans. as to why---based in reality and fact....just what QUALIFIES an offensive line coach as OUR Head Coach (by the way...the THIRD such person without any NFL head coaching experience)(in a row)???? Because...some-one else with no experience at his position said so??????
    I'm not being a smart-a++ I just know there's an answer out there....Thanks:confused2:

I mentioned this before...how the heck are we supposed to evaluate rookie head coaching prospects? I mean good God...just to be considered one would hope they have done a good job at their respective position to date. I don't think there's any way for us as fans to do anything but close our eyes and hope whomever we get pans out.

As long as it is not Mike Tice.

In the end, I think is about coaching people just like in the restaurant business(I'm a manager at a restaurant) where you just have to get the most out of your people....coaching is the same thing...your players have to buy into what you're trying to do, they need to respect what you're trying to get them to do....all I'm hearing is thst Sparano has the respect of his players and he gets the most out of them...will that be good enough to win as a HC? Time will tell.

    Ozzy rules!!

I agree that coaches need to be able to get the most out of their players. That can be evident regardless of what position you coach.

Other attributes that I think are necessary and don't depend position:
    • leadership -- command the respect of your players
    • ability to teach -- a coach needs to be able to get a player to learn and apply what they've learned

But, there are other things that a head coach must be able to do that positional coaches don't get exposed to (or not very much). Things like game management (which we saw was very evident with Cam), ability to put all phases of the game together, etc.

So, I don't mind taking a chance on Sparano with a caveat. Some of the things about being a head coach can be learned, but the other things that are more "inbred" like leadership, teaching ability, motiviation, etc. are something that I'd hope any candidate already has. If Tony has these, then IMO give him a shot.

not sure how much mroe an offensive or defensive coordinator would bring to the table if they didn't have any previous head coaching experience?? That seems to be the major question for you, that he wasn't even a coordinator, right? Well, a coordinator doesn't do all that things you describe either.

As for Sparano specifically, he was more than just O-Line coach for the 'Boys. He was the running game coordinator and I believe asst head coach.

I don't know how we as fans can evaluate any head coach prospect, but I do think that the guy doing the picking for us now knows what it takes, so we as fans should probably defer to him.

His players, though, are certainly aware that this might be Sparano's last game in Dallas, and here's what Leonard Davis said of Sparano:

"It'll be a loss," Davis said. "It'll be a big loss.

"I'll miss him. I like his demeanor and how he goes about his approach to the games. You can't knock that in a coach."

"He knows how to push buttons," Davis said. "Some coaches I've had, they really didn't know how to push guys' buttons to make them play at a higher level. He knows how to do that."

"He's got a passion. Everything we do, it doesn't matter how big or small it is, he wants his guys to come out on top. It doesn't matter if it's some sort of walkthrough drill. He wants his guys to execute and to be a winner. He'll accept nothing less."

that's exactly the opposite of Cam Cameron..... so that's a positive!!!!!

    (On Sparano's serious facial expressions
"You know what, he smiles," receiver Patrick Crayton said, speed-searching his memory for some example. "He does smile. He laughs from time to time. We used to kid him about that, and say, you know, one of those days you're going to smile. The season got on, I think he loosened up, he smiled." (On Sparano's personality)
"Very hard core," reserve offensive lineman Cory Procter said.

"He's a straight-shooter," starting right tackle Leonard Davis said. "There's no beating around the bush about anything when it comes to him. You ask him a question, he's going to tell you the truth. You've got to have some tough skin. You can't be a sensitive guy."

"And it doesn't matter who you are, from the highest-paid player to the practice squad player," Crayton said. "And he does have a tendency to let the explicits fly."
(On the kind of head coach Sparano would be)
"He's a little bit like Bill," Crayton said.

"I think he would be a lot like Bill," Procter said.

"There's a reason Parcells has an affinity for the guy, because when he looks in the mirror, he sees Tony," said former Cowboys quarterback Babe Laufenberg, now a Dallas sports anchor. "A kinder, gentler version of Bill."

Reading those comments make me think good things about Sparano but to tell you the truth there's no way to tell if he's going to be a good HC or not. I think that going with a "younger" rookie head coach isn't the worst idea in the world. I think part of the reason that they didn't keep Cam is he already lost the team. I'm sure when Parcells did talk to the players on the team about Cam they weren't too thrilled and for that reason they went another direction. I think the plan is to groom Sparano with the right people around him to be an effective coach in the NFL.

Well as long as he is not a pansy like Cam Cameron and not afraid to get in player's faces like Cam Cameron I am cool with. He is the head coach but Parcells is running the show.

Sparano is NOT just the o-line coach, he's the Assistant Head Coach of the Cowboys as well and has called plays in the past. So for anyone who says he's JUST an o-line coach that's not true.

He was a head coach at one time for Division 2 New Haven, where he led them to a national runner-up spot one year, and he did win a couple of coach of the year awards when he was up there, so there's at least a foundation there.

right.....he has no other qualifications. It's amazing with that being the ONLY qualification that more people haven't interviewed. Parcells has to know thousands of people....why haven't any of them interviewed. :glare:

Also, nice to see that simply knowing Parcells was enough to get Sparano an interview for the Baltimore job too.

Hmm. So he chewed out his offensive linemen. That's a great quality for a head coach. :001_rolleyes:

Question. Did his offensive linemen play better after getting chewed out?

    Nope.

Maybe Tony should have done a little more planning and a little less chewing.

I don't think Parcells cares if we(Dolphin fans)think he is qualified. Parcells is being paid to make that decision. I guess we are going to have to trust him.

    There is no ideal candidate

What head coaching candidate is ever qualified? Cam Cameron was a former college HC, and a well-regarded NFL OC. He was also a failure. Nick Saban was a three-time college HC, successful everywhere he went, previous to that, he was a successful NFL DC, and DB coach. He was a failure. Dave Wannstadt was a failed NFL HC before he got to Miami. He was an even bigger failure after he left. Jimmy Johnson was a two-time Super Bowl winner in the NFL, and a national championship-winning HC at the college level. He too left Miami as a failure. The Dolphins have hired every conceivable sort of head coaching candidate--guys who had succeeded and failed as NFL head coaches before they got here, guys who had succeeded and failed as college coaches, successful coordinators, you name it, we've tried it. Who exactly has the ideal qualifications for the job? It's about time some people admit that hiring head coaches and general managers isn't enough, all the pieces must align at precisely the correct time.

The Dolphins won Super Bowls when they had a combination of a strong head coach, strong front office and strong assistants, but never won another without all those elements. Joe Gibbs was a genius with Bobby Beathard in the front office in Washington, not so much without him. The glory days of the Oakland Raiders just happened to coincide with a period of time when they had a great head coach, like Madden, a great front office, with Ron Wolf, and great assistants, like Bill Walsh. Championship teams generally have competence, or greatness infused into the organization at all levels. Is Sparano the answer? If not, then who? Was hiring a retread like Wade Phillips a good move by the Cowboys? How about Tom Coughlin in New York? Norv Turner in San Diego? Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh? No one had heard of Mike McCarthy before he got the gig in GB. If you hire a coordinator, you can either get a Joe Gibbs, or a Cam Cameron. If its a retread HC you can get a Bill Belichick, or a Herm Edwards. If its a college HC you can get a Jimmy Johnson, or a Nick Saban, or Bobby Petrino, there is no one size fits all. Who exactly is the idealized candidate?

I agree with MR.Majestik there is no sure things ever in life or the NFL

My ideal headcoach would be a combination of a great leader, excellent talent evaluater and a strategical expert.

My feelings are I am willing to give Sparano a chance,I like what I read about him from players I have always felt players in any sport know best when you get an endorsment from a player it speaks volumes to me.
