Is it really a remake if it is based off of a book? If they are making Total Recall to be more like the book it is based off of instead of a cheesy action flick(Awesome as it was), is that really a bad thing? Like doing another Starship Troopers or I Robot, however doing both of those as movies that make you think instead of cheesy action flicks.
My apologies if this was mentioned, but did anyone else see they're making a sequel to Donnie Darko? It looks abysmal.
At least they tried for some continuity by bringing back the actress who played the sister and making it about her.
His little sister thought right? Not Maggie Gyllenhall. And Elizabeth Berkeley is in it... nuff said.
Yeah, I just found that on Wiki. They should have said 'sequel' in the link I posted. 'Update' sounds like a remake to me. Thanks for the info.
And it gets worse. Just read an article about planned movie remakes. Some of the more glaring ones: 1. Back to School - Cedric the Entertainer takes over the role made famous by Rodney Dangerfield. 'Nuff said. We all know how well Cedric's take on "The Honeymooners" fared. 2. The Evil Dead - Cult horror movie classic. Shouldn't be touched with a 10 foot pole. No one can play the role of "Ash" but Bruce Campbell. 3. Conan the Barbarian - This one might actually be good. Anyone who's ever read any of the Conan books knows that Arnold was NOT Conan. 4. Death Wish - Written, directed and starring Sylvester Stallone. Dear Gods, save us. 5. The Taking of Pelham 123 - Why? What was wrong with the original? What need is there for this? And underrated gem that should be left alone 6. Hellraiser - Another horror classic, and one that's not that old to begin with. Why the need for a remake??? 7. The Birds - Yet again, some director thinks he can do better than Hitchcock. Hey, maybe Vince Vaughn will star in this disaster too. 8. A Nightmare On Elm Street - Robert Englund IS Freddy Krueger. End of story. 9. The Warriors - A 70's Cult Classic. Cheesy, over the top, and thoroughly enjoyable! You can bet a year's salary it will be "modernized" and the great rock & roll and Motown soundtrack replaced with hip-hop. 10. Escape From New York - *shakes his head* Can ANYONE but Donald Pleasance utter the line "You are the Duke....you are A number one!"? 11. Porky's - The completely hilarious original is being remade, and the new title is "Howard Stern's Porky's". Need I even comment? 12. Short Circuit - I can almost guarantee all the charm from the original will be missing. 13. The Thing - Wasn't this ALREADY remade??? And the worst, at least in MY opinion.... 14. The Rocky Horror Picture Show - This movie is legend. On it's own, a TERRIBLE film, but seen at midnight showings across the country throughout the late 70's and into the 80's, probably one of the more hilarious nights you could spend due to the audience participation. It's being remade by MTV, and if that alone doesn't strike fear into your hearts....they have promised "a hipper cast and all new music!" Gone will be "The Time Warp". Can ANY fan of this movie imagine it without that song??? Can anyone imagine Frank N. Furter coming down the elevator and NOT tapping his heel to "Sweet Transvestite"? Hollywood truly blows.
The first one was one of the funniest movies ever. This new will probably suck, but it won't change how much the first one made me laugh.
I loved the original Conan but I think a remake could be a good thing. It would help get the "Conan The Destroyer" taste out of my mouth...holy crap was that a DREADFUL film.
No respect. Part of its charm is its cheese. Bad idea. It can't be worse. Do you believe in Jesus? Well you're going to meet him. This will probably suck, unless he can capture some of the magic that made the last Rambo such a great movie. I never saw it, I'll have to Netflix the original. I have no prob with this. Easily one of my favorite horror flicks, I'd love to see it reinterpreted with modern FX. If he gets eaten alive by birds, I'm in, otherwise forget it. Not anymore. Now it's Billy Bob Thorton. I just puked on my keyboard. This could be good as well, I love the original and a remake interests me. More boobs, more bush, more bad language. I don't get remakes of comedies, it's not like updated FX can make it better, the magic of comedies is in the writing, acting and direction. Rare to see an old one overshadowed by a remake. Probably not. And no Ally Sheedy. This is a prequel to the John Carpenter classic. It's about the Norwegian outpost and how they discovered and were overcome by the Thing. Well said, the RHPS is not a movie, it's an experience.
Because people pay to see this ****. If no one bought or went to these god awful remakes they wouldn't be doing anymore. Its been shown that redoing movies makes good money so you can expect it to get worse and worse.
Just saw some more that are being remade. Be prepared to gag.... 1. Meatballs - Since that entire movie was carried by Bill Murray and he's NOT involved in this one, why bother? 2. Logan's Run - Another classic about to be obliterated. 3. Knight Rider - Not a remake of a film, but a TV remake. You see how well the TV show is doing. I can't imagine what the studio is thinking. 4. Clash of the Titans - C'mon man...it's Harryhausen! Leave it alone! 5. Poltergeist - Are you kidding me? What is the need? The movie was perfect the way it was. 6. Monster Squad - Yet another 80's comedy being "re-imagined". Funny...for awhile everyone made fun of the 80's. Now all of a sudden everyone wants to relive them. Lemmings.... 7. Robocop - No...please no. Another one that was fine as is, and still translates well today. 8. 10 - I really, truly don't get this. Who's idea was this? 9. Phantasm - As with Robert Englund and Freddy Krueger....Angus Scrimm IS the Tall man. 10. Revenge of the Nerds - WHY? The whole movie was the chemistry between the cast. HOW can you possibly top the original? Pathetic. 11. Highlander - To quote from the movie, "There can be only one." 12. Rock & Roll High School - Um...guys??? The Ramones aren't around anymore. And since they were the core of the movie, um.....NO! And the biggest onslaught of remakes are coming from Universal Studios. Fresh out of ideas, they are going to re-invent (gods I HATE that f'ing word!) all their classic monsters. Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Creature From the Black Lagoon, Dr. Jekyl & Mr. Hyde, and the Bride of Frankenstein are all on the drawing board. From what I can see of the Wolfman so far, that actually may work. And it would be interesting to what CGI could do to the Creature....but do we really need yet another Frankenstein???
You can blame this all on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Nolan and Co. have redone Batman so well.....and only a few years after they had an entire franchise....Hollywood is ruined. They think they can do this with anything. Or maybe they're adopting the Bill Parcells method of shoring up a position by flooding it with draft picks. Only this time they're remaking movies en mass, hoping to hit on one. Meanwhile we're left with the collateral damage. I'm probably giving these studio execs too much credit. It's doubtful that they're trying to find the next great movie in these remakes. Only gross enough that they cover the overhead and line their pockets with some profits. You see it paralleled in TV as well. It seems there isn't a single show (by that I mean reality and game shows, and some actual 'TV' shows) that hasn't already been done in the UK at some point.
I was watching 'Enter the Dragon' tonight on G4, and at the end the 'movie host' said a remake of that is in the works as well. Muck's got some good points with the Batman franchise. Movies have been remade for decades, but it's really taking off now. There's more than one 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers', 'The Fly', and 'Mutiny on the Bounty'. BTW, Rob Zombie's Halloween II will be out in August, and picks up right where the 1st remake ended, just like the original sequel did.
Now I heard True Grit will done more along the lines of the novel, from the girl's perspective. Interesting to say the least.
