That's what I would like to know. I thought the thread was going to be about TO in the AFC East. Rev, what's there to panic about in March?
By and large, it is... However, there have been a number of posts which have made it clear that "The Dolphin's absolutely, positively, of direst necessity and utmost urgency, of a certainty NEED to acquire.......(insert name of position desired here) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!" The most current one of those is CB. Personally, I think everyone in the Western Hemisphere knows that corner is not one of the areas of strength for the team. I would also think that between Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano, they might have a hint of that as well. Now, there aren't as many of those posts as in past years, to be sure. But, how many people screaming "Fire!" in a movie does it take to make the herd stampede for the doors? All I'm saying is relax. Watch how real football people do things, without the handwringing, worrifying, and angst some have about a few positions on the team... It really isn't rocket science. And it's not going to save kids in Africa from dying of hunger, either....
Are you crazy or something!!! What do you mean relax? If we don't address the CB problem right now - as in tomorrow at the latest, we are going to be in big, big, big, BIG trouble when the season starts........... ..in uh,.... 6 months. Hmmmm...... Well....okay maybe since our first game is a few months from now, we may have a little time to take care of it. Alright so maybe we can wait a couple more days - but only a couple Rev. Okay?
What would you rather have, people offering their opinions on how to deal with our CB situation, or more threads about changing the uniforms?
I expect these kind of posts from another forum. 50 paranoid posts, and another 50 posts complaining about those paranoid posts.
Stop Panicing about CB Both the Miami Herald and the Palm Beach Post have posted blogs screaming for the Dolphins to get a "FREAKIN" CB. The Herald's Armando Salguero speaks as if he has uncovered something that Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland have forgotten. Lets be honest; Parcells and Ireland have a plan, a good one at that. Parcells has always believed in investing in players who get to the QB, rather than CB's who get called for pass interference for the slightest of touching. The bottom line is that the Dolphins know they need to add CB depth and they know exactly how they plan on doing it. Folks, this isn’t Dave Wannstedt and Rick Spielman collaborating on A.J. Feeley, Jamar Fletcher and David Boston. Look at how Bill Belichick refuses to waste money on CB’s and then come back to me and tell me why the Dolphins should spend big dollars on a player who will not impact the team one way or another. Everybody thought that Bryant McFadden would be a great addition. The Dolphins and Steelers (who have cap space), decided he wasn’t worth a lousy $10 million over 2 years….That should tell you something…I would agree with those of you who would like to see Leigh Bodden line up opposite Will Allen. BUT, not at the expense of hamstringing the team in future years. Parcells, Ireland and Sparano obviously have studied it and come to the conclusion that investing in Gibril Wilson and Yeremiah Bell was the best way to solidify the secondary. With a couple of flexible safeties they will be able to disguise coverages and mask the perceived weakness at CB. Finally, these are guys who know that this is very deep draft at the CB position and understand that you win long term by making your draft picks count in April, not by spending recklessly in March.
this is only your 3rd post... and I can already tell I am going to like you lol. I honestly think we are going to get a CB in the draft in either the 1st or 2nd round, that will be able to play at a high level for us. The slow 40's of the CBs and an overall lack of height is going to push some CBs back in the draft and we should be able to get one for great value. Welcome to the family!!!
Good post, sharky. Agreed on most counts. Still think we'll end up taking a CB in the first two rounds. The need is there, AND the talent pool is there to make it a no-brainer at this point. I could see it being our #44 pick.
Very likely to be our 44th pick considering that it's a nice spot to see the last of the top CBs. WR I couldn't give a crap about frankly. If it's at 25 and it's Nicks fine that's alright. If it's at 56 I don't care really. It just doesn't affect the game the way front seven does.
Right... at 44 we still see one of the guys good enough to have gone at the end of the first round. There will definitely be great value at CB at that #44 spot. In terms of a WR, I'd be happy with Nicks at #25. Otherwise, I want to see a stud ILB or pass-rush capable OLB (DE convert). I would love to wait until the third round to get Robiskie, but he'll be gone by the bottom of the third round, and I feel like our late second round pick is too high for him. That's part of why I could like with Nicks at #25. If we took Nicks at #25, I wouldn;t mind seeing David Veikune (De convert to OLB in NFL) with our 4th round pick.
Question you have to ask yourself though is how often do you see a quality WR on the free agent market (from time to time). How often do you see a quality pressure player (pretty rarely). I mean Torry Holt is available, Terell Owens just switched teams, T.J. Houshmanzadeh just switched teams, Coles was available. Any OLBs worth a flying ****? Nope...
It would be much easier to say to not panic about CB if we weren't in a division where we'll be facing Randy Moss and Terrel Owens twice a season. Yeah, Parcell's philosophy is to get pressure on the QB and take pressure off his corners, but that doesn't take away from the fact that that is a HUGE area of need. We have Will Allen as a starter. He's a decent cover guy but struggles against physical receivers (Moss and Owens would fit that bill). Other than that, who do we have? Jason Allen? Pffft. Sure we'll take a corner in the draft, but are we prepared to pin hopes on a rookie corner? What if we lack pressure AGAIN this season? Other than Porter, our pass rush was non-existent. We can HOPE that we improve drastically in that area. But there are no guarantees. Having balance between a good pass rush and a good defensive backfield is important - no matter how you spin it. We better hope our safeties play their asses off because, at this point, we're going to be very thin and very inexperienced at the corner spot. And Allen isn't getting any younger and he isn't going to morph into a physical corner all of a sudden. Our safeties were mentioned as being there to mask coverages and mask our CBs weaknesses. In effect your saying that all of the pressure of coverage will fall on the safeties. How can that be when there are safety blitzes, safety responsibilities for TEs, safety responsibility for run support, etc. THAT is spreading your safeties pretty darn thin folks.
Truth to tell, neither our OL nor our DL/LBs were able to get push or penetration in the middle last year when it counted. We did things to mask or compensate for it, but that's where the physical part of the game begins and all too often it just wasn't there. It has to be addressed before anything else if we are going to be able to win the kinds of games we lost last year. I'm all for savaging WRs at the LOS and then covering them like a blanket, but if you contract the amount of time the WR has to get open and the QB has to find him and throw, you also shorten the field so your CBs have to cover a smaller area. As much as I don't like Jason Allen, even he should be able to get it done under those conditionds.
The Jets have a decent Receiving Corps as well. Better Cb play will only help the pass rush, that is where Parcel's philosophy seems odd, two mediocre corners while trying to find several pass rushers is not a recipe for success. As for Jason Allen, we'll see, he played well until the Pats game, and he is not the only Cb that Moss has made look bad. We've invested heavily in Wilson and Bell, they have to perform or it will be a long season. I do think it's funny that here we are in another offseason spending time on the Jason Allen "hope" watch.
I think we'll get a cb but it may not be until the 4th or 5th round. I think we're more likely to shore up the lb and defensive line spots. There will still be good cb's in the later rounds. Parcells and Ireland seem to me to be the type to spend money on a few positions. QB, OL, DE/DT and LB. The heart and soul positions of a team. WR, RB and CB positions that other teams go gaga they seem to fix after getting the game in the trenches ready. I think we'll pick up a couple wr's and cb's in the later rounds to groom. But I think our first picks are going to be LB and DE, maybe an NT in the 2nd or 3rd round.
